One of our top shelf outfitters in New Mexico just acquired a voucher for Unit 15 (Gilla National Forest) during prime rut dates; 9/15 to 9/24 (5 day hunt during that time frame). $18,500 for the hunt and that includes the voucher, 1x1 guide, meals and lodging. The value in this hunt is the voucher. This a pretty difficult tag to draw, so you are skipping quite a bit toward the head of the line, so to speak, hence the higher price for the hunt. It's like....buying a fast pass at Disneyworld. DM for more details.

Also...this is a unit wide Unit 15 voucher.

Wow?! For a unit wide tag in 15……yikes

Yes...well...includes the hunt as well. Again...the "Hunt" is the cheap part, it's the landowner permit the outfitter has to buy from the landowner that is purchased essentially at market value...one wat to look at it. These aren't my prices fellas....but this is the tag, with NO draw and the guided hunt. Some hunters don't want to wait to draw...or have been trying to draw for years and get tired of it. If you can afford it, this skips you to the front of the line.

I know it’s not your price and that you have nothing to do with that aspect of it. Believe me, as a NM resident all my life I know how the landowner and outfitter system works.

I hear ya....I grew up in Alaska. No points, preference points, bonus points, landowner tags.....you just either drew or you didn't and hunted regardless. Crazy how the system works sometimes and how expensive hunts can be.

So you could finish your season after the guided hunt if you didn't kill. If I had it laying around I'd probably jump in.

Sure would be nice if the tag could only be sold at value

It is being sold at value, value is whatever someone will pay.

As i have always said, Landowner vouchers should ONLY be allowed to be sold/used to hunt ranch only property. This would cut down on all the profit making and political BS that goes with them in NM.

You could get a jicarilla tag, fill it in a day and have 10k left for the casino

When I first moved to NM there were LEFTOVER archery tags for Unit 15. So in the span of just a portion of my lifetime it's gone from not enough interest in the tag to $18K. I shudder to imagine where it's going to be when my kiddo gets to be my age.

I killed my 1st elk with a bow in 1991. We hunted all northern units. Sure wish I would have put in for Gila tags back then. Much easier to draw then.

Just to clarify (not trying to start something, haha) the $18k includes the cost of a 1x1 hunt as well. But yes...it is expensive.

Smarba I started hunting in the Gila in the early 90’s. If you didn’t put in and wanted a tag, you could make a couple calls and have a LO voucher for $500…….

The 15’s were MUCH different units back then……if only we had a crystal ball and could have seen how things would change….
