05-Nov-23
NCK: You’re mistaken. Pat killed a P&Y deer on that Iowa hunt. You can see the Buck on his 2019 Trophy photo.

96.354% of archery killed deer are going to, or coming from some sort of food. The rest are killed during the rut like today. I’ve seen 4 bucks so far this am sit.

My Iowa buck. Hit the link to watch the video. Just so you can be more informed.

I’ve shot close to 400 whitetails in my life. Only 40 or so over bait.

But it’s ok if you want to disparage me if it makes you feel better. I really don’t give a shit. Carry on.

And by the way, I’m not really a big fan of baiting either. Really wish they would do away with it in Ohio. I fully understand the downside to it. But where legal and effective I can also enjoy baited hunts too. I’m not a hater.

Nice Iowa buck Pat! I’m with you on the baiting issue. It’s not legal in Illinois and I’m glad of it. I also think food plots blur the lines somewhat. Having said that, I have no doubt that most of the deer I’ve killed were going to or coming from a bean or corn field. Or standing in one of them when shot. So if it’s legal, carry on, I can’t judge anyone. Good luck in Iowa, always look forward to the write up.

Bou, no worries. I brought it up too. They can’t bully me. I don’t really care what anyone thinks.

This is more about despising non residents than baiting. Every Kansas resident my outfitter knows baits around here.

But if KDWP bans baiting next year-I’m ok with that. We’ll be a little less successful but will adapt to hunting corridors, scrapes, and calling. Very confident this hunt will still be awesome.

I’m in a tree right now enjoying my first night hunting. I’m also having a little bit of fun with this topic. Dare I say; they took the bait? ;-)

Good luck to all you guy’s hunting. Should be a lot of bucks cruising.

Then they promptly log onto bowsite to spread some of their joy around to others.

Back in 2010 or so we sold some bulls to a rancher in SW Kansas and I hauled them out to the ranch. The ranch had about 5 miles of river bottom and big winter wheat fields I got to know the rancher and long story short he told me to put in for his unit and come out and kill a whitetail.

Never had killed a WT deer let alone seen one , all mule deer here. He had me sit in a tree stand at a feeder and damn I didn’t think WT got that big. I had action at that stand like crazy. He told me don’t shoot a dink wait for a good one. About 3 days in a big, heavy 5x5 and some does came in, one of them caught me drawing back and they blew out. The next night a big broken something by something came in trash all over, broken tines, huge body he had 7 or 8 does come in ahead of him. He would run a doe around then go after another one. It got to last light and I finally had about a 35 yard shot. I pulled back and let one go… clean miss….I had one morning hunt left and I had to get back to NM. Got to the stand about 6:30 and freezing cold. Never saw a deer until around 9 am I saw a nice big buck walking across an opening about 100 yards out ..no shot. At 11:00 I had to get down and head for home. Never did kill one over bait but that was one action pack few days. We hunt mulies here spot and stalk and climb the mountains all day and glass for hours. It’s a physically demanding hunt just like hunting elk but I would love to get back to SW Kansas and sit a stand with a feeder waiting on a big corn, milo, winter wheat fed, high, wide n heavy whitetail to come in !!

It's not the NR's for me, I hunt other states, most of us do. If someone wants to come here and actually hunt, that's great and they should have the opportunity. KS is a special place.

You get it Pat..."by the way, I’m not really a big fan of baiting either. Really wish they would do away with it in Ohio. I fully understand the downside to it" but only in OH because you live/own land there? NM highcountry, pretty sure you wouldn't want baiting in NM for deer/elk?

Unfortunate that some who would fight, and stand staunchly for hunting on this site, would support such practices. Not a one could equate it to hunting, there's no comparison.

Don't care what you think of me, just think about what comes after you.

Lot of fanboys in here that raise hell when the tables are turned and there’s an issue in their state, be it quotas, preference points, NR season dates etc. And/or are quiet as a mouse when changes actually do benefit them personally, which says even more. For Pat to poke fun at Kyle and then say he wishes it was banned in Ohio shows the respect level for the Kansas hunt. It’s just another tag. I get it, it’s legal, he doesn’t own any land, no pressure to kill, hang out with the bros, etc. Can shoot a nice buck or not, and then on to the next. But baiting has indeed ruined a lot of properties, permissions and the hobby in general for quite a few folks, both resident and non. As long as Pat gets #401 I guess that’s what most here care about though! :)

From: Quinn @work
08-Nov-23
Beauty of an 8 but I can understand Pat's decision to not shoot the day before his 7 day hunt. Maybe he shoots it the last day of his hunt.

My buddy got lucky on our CO eastern plains hunt and passed a good buck opening day that he shot 4 days later with 15 minutes left in his hunt. 16 minutes before that he was all regrets.

"Never pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last" is good advice but sometimes it works out for the hunter if they don't.

My bet is the outfitter will dump another 60 tons of corn near the "ghost's" draw and lure him in for a shot. :) JK

Good luck Pat!

From: molsonarcher
08-Nov-23
Any day of the hunt that deer is a shooter and I would try my best to leave with him in my posession.

Factor in the heat and lack of deer activty during hunting hours, I would be eccstatic to have taken him.

Hopefully ghost shows or that decision might haunt Pat.

From: Bou'bound
08-Nov-23
“Never pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last" is good advice but sometimes it works out for the hunter if they don't.”

That mindset has a place but only if the hunter prioritizes the kill over the experience. If he didn’t he would never choose to forgo all but one day of experience for an animal that was not initially valued as worth doing so for.

From: Pat Lefemine
08-Nov-23
I have zero regrets passing that first day buck. Would do it again. If I go home unsuccessful I’m fine with that. I get to experience Kansas once a year and I didn’t think that buck was worth depriving myself of the full experience. I 190” buck would be worth it, but not a 160/8.

reading this thread for the first time, reminds me of why I drifted away from this site for several years... Wow - just wow, and WTFF am I reading?

Good luck Pat... My buddy been in Kansas almost two weeks and it's been slowest ever. It's been same here in NJ since about end of October. That 10/28 full moon possibly came at the worst possible time. It just brought far too high a percentage of does into estrous at once and created possibly the worst case of "lockdown" I have ever experienced. JMHO - other can certainly refute that but it does seem to be the case.

Setting up in well known historical rut funnels has been futile, there is no reason for a mature buck to travel. He literally roles out of bed and the next harem member is there ready to breed. Hence - it just becomes the "spike show" for all the dinks that can't get a date.

Former resident in the late 70's. Moved back east in the early 80's and continued to return every fall to bird hunt and then bowhunt as an NR in the mid to late 90's on. Killed some nice bucks on both private and public. My hunting partner has fallen prey to this corn craze. No more scouting, just head to the co-op. Use to get up at five and check the wind and weather. Now the alarm goes off and they grab the cellphone from the nightstand and pop open the tactecam app to check the cameras. That 100% determines what stand will be filled.

Some made the comment that if they get rid of baiting, property values will plummet. I think that says it all. Maybe I'm just getting old and have moved on to that next stage of why I hunt.

Would some overgrown properties that have been allowed to go to shit vs the native prairie they should be lose some value, possibly. Forest is dreaming that it would have any serious effect on the vast majority of lands in Kansas. Most farmers and ranchers I know would love if the rec value in their areas would tank. Also, this is assuming the value is strictly tied to being able to dump corn. It’s not. The value is antlers. Whether or not you can dump corn the demand will still very much be there as long as there’s big deer in Kansas. My grandad started buying ground in Kansas in the 40’s. He used to drive me around and occasionally mention what he paid for a certain place. They’ve all doubled many times over, and were doing so long before anyone gave a shit about deer. Forest lives in a dreamworld and he’s the center of it.

I am not sure I agree with the superficial blood draw ends a hunt. I have never heard a good reason for it.

I would not call a solid arrow to the hip a superficial hit, and can agree with the logic of that ending a hunt. I do not believe you were calling that a superficial hit.

What would be the reason, that if you can document (with video footage) that a hit is superficial, that it justifies ending a hunt?

Have posted on this before, usually on Chuck Adams threads...8^) but anyhow I can think of at least 5 accidental ham shot I've hit and recovered all of them, BUT all were broadside and near the dead center of the ham hits if I remember right... 3 with guns and 2 with arrows... One I killed with a .22 rimfire as a kid (long story) musta hit the femoral artery... Learned to treat them like a gut shot, let them lay overnight... 3 or the 5 were still alive the following day but was able to get close enough to finish it...

Why not? Last one I shot caught me reaching for my bow as he was about to get by me and I had to move pretty quick. He gave me the stink eye for a bit then nervously turned and headed back the way he came. I got to full draw as he went behind some tree limbs and stopped him when he stepped in the clear. I sent an arrow through his lungs.

Yeah would be interesting if Pat's people keep track of him during the growing season next year... If he walks with a limp I believe the theory is the right side antler may become nontypical... While the bone is growing I think weight distribution with a limp is what may cause it if what I had read is true... Front quarter same side, hind quarter opposite side...

"That wound does not seem like the devastating trauma that would impact skeletal and anger development"...

Yeah Bou but it's about a limp or not... As said, if he favors it any and has a little hitch in his gitty up, even just a little will change his weight distribution even affecting the way he lays... Now thinking about it, read years ago the way they lay affects antler growth... Can't remember how it goes now, but some bucks prefer a certain side to lay on depending on the wind and terrain and why antlers of most or many are bigger on one side than the other... Has to do with blood circulation and gravity when antlers are in the developing stage...

The way a buck lays affecting antler growth I do remember was only a theory in one of Rothhaar's books... "damage-related injury is when a buck suffers a crippling injury to his hind leg and his opposite side antler grows abnormally. The specific cause has not been confirmed but alterations to the buck's walk, or gait, due to the crippled leg may alter blood flow or nerve stimulation, resulting in the altered growth of the opposite antler"

From: Quinn @work

I hope that buck survives but I doubt it will knowing that the infection will probably kill it with a long slow death.

Those pictures of it feeding out of a corn feeder are pretty sad. Looks like livestock to me? It's too bad that an "outfitter" with such a great area would offer hunts that resort to dumping piles of corn so clients from CT (or anywhere else) can come and sit in a stand over it to kill a deer.

It's kind of funny how Pat never show's the pictures of the deer he's hunting with their nose to the feeders until they have been wounded. How many have been killed with their mouths full of corn?

Pat, you're not hunting. I honestly believe you know you aren't. You're sitting on bait piles done by someone else hoping for a shot at a trained buck. Enjoy your "hunt"/kill. Bowsite Exclusive. What a joke.

When I was younger I shot and cleaned many a deer with a broadhead stuck in it's spine. Wounds were healed over and you couldn't tell until cleaning them. Sometime infection sets in, sometimes it doesn't.

From: tobywon
06-Dec-23
Funny when I see people here and on other threads say a deer will likely die of infection, etc, yet year in and year out we see proof what these animals can survive and of course we seem to be frequently talking about how tough these animals are. Of course any outcome is possible when you break skin, just like there is risk for anyone when we go in for a simple medical procedure. However, how many deer do you see or hear about with previous wounds or foreign objects embedded such as a broadhead, piece of arrow, piece of antler, bullet, or birdshot lodged in their spines, shoulders, legs, head, etc. from prior years? I think cameras now more than ever in the woods just proves that many survive.

Pat's arrow did not hit anything vital nor did it hit guts to release bacteria and make the deer go septic. Although no one can 100% say this deer will survive its wounds, IMO I believe its very likely this deer will survive from this wound. It would be interesting to get a follow-up if someone is able to kill this deer.

Yeah it's cool Pat allows folks to express their opinions uncensored... Good man...

Back to the buck's survival - If that buck is not shot again, I'd bet money he'll survive until next season... Maybe Pat will get a crack at him as a nontypical next year...8^) Now, that would be cool...

After all our firearms seasons are over around here during late winter deer congregate (depending on the severity of the winter) and I'd guess maybe about 1 in 10 show up wounded or cripple, with open wounds, broken legs, blown off legs likely from shotgun slugs, etc. and all of them I knew of except for 1 survived winter and made it to spring green-up...

This guy in video photo attached taken on a January 28th, had a broken front right leg and a wounded left rear leg/hip (notice the swelling) and he was literally walking on just 2 legs and he got so skinny and hobbled so bad you'd think going to fall over, but yet he's working a licking branch in late January, and I know for a fact he lived to spring green-up...

They are truly amazing animals...

BTW - Luv that photo Jethro posted with arrow in flight, especially the coons relaxed on their butts enjoying the feast...8^)

I’ve killed 3 deer over the years with Broadheads in them and each wound was at least a year old. Your prediction of the deer dying is a guess at best. My GUESS is he lives. They are extremely resilient North American animals with a will to survive matched only by the elk.
