Well here we go with the fourth annual, Texas, Cull Buck/ Doe, bow hunt. This is a hunt to remove genetically weak bucks and does to fulfill management objectives for the lease.
Warning, this is a baited, low fence, Texas deer hunt so please ignore thread if you don’t agree with baiting as a hunting method where legal. Picture heavy so enjoy.
Nice rental car..
Nice rental car..
Lenny graciously invited Me, Dennis Razza and the “New guy” handle “Gus” who he met last year in Africa. So cool all the hunts put together because of Bowsite.
I hadn’t bow hunted Texas before hunting at Lenny’s lease and it definitely has grown on us especially in January when timing is good. How about this rental car. A 2023 Tacoma with trail beefy tires. A must for the two tracks we’ll be hunting.
No can shoot…
No can shoot…
Most of the lease members are rifle hunters but Lenny has 7 spots set up for bow hunting with shots from 15 to 30 yards. As you can imagine the deer are pretty wound up after almost 4 months of hunting pressure. However the bucks are recovering from the rut and we see a ton of bucks.
Here is an example of a buck us “cull hunters” must pass.

The first morning Lenny puts us in three ground blinds and he graciously waits on a group text if we need tracking help.
At 8:15 am two does, a fawn and small buck come in and I drain one of the does. The does need to go for management but they sure are hard to shoot. I’m a lucky guy and deer one is in the books.
Back at the Ranch house there’s a cooler and hanging gambrels. Ranch house makes hunt life very comfy.
I'd jump all over this hunt! Way to get the party started Charlie!
Texas sunset.
Texas sunset.
All of us saw deer the first am but no shots for Dennis and Gus.
We each returned to the same blind for the pm hunt. I had the sun right in my eyes until this beautiful sunset.
Dang Charlie, sit0 gonna have a coronary, but I’m gonna have fun !
Lenny fussed him at 8.5 and we’ll see what DeerAge finds.

Right at sunset a nice Buck appears. He is stocky, has dark black scent glands and a gray face. 5x4 prolly 100” deer. He’s a shooter. After a few minutes he goes broad side and I get a shot at 23 yards. Shot looks great and Lenny comes to my blind and we track. After 60 yards he’s piled up. Two sits, two deer. First day luck for me but neither Gus or Dennis have a shot opportunity although we all see multiple deer.
Nice! Looks like a ton of fun!
Nice to have deer hanging while having dinner and cocktails.
Nice to have deer hanging while having dinner and cocktails.
In addition to Lenny being host he’s also Outfitter, Guide and most importantly “chef”. The man puts on a great brunch and dinner each night including cocktails. Tonight we have porterhouse steaks with 1836 seasoning and baked potatoes with butter, sour cream and cheese.
Wind change tomorrow so we’ll all move to different blinds.
Now THIS looks fun!! Have a good time!
No can shoot. Young buck.

Next am we’re in different blinds and all three see deer but no buck or doe shots.
Lenny drives around the ranch and shots a doe with his “longbow”. I think he calls his longbow a Creedmore.
Gus and Lenny. Dennis will mount a Fox for Lenny.

Friday evening Lenny’s fried Josh arrives and the boys are going out Fox and Bobcat hunting. In an hour and a half 5 foxes are shot. Absolute fun treat for us not used to Texas predator hunting.
Nice shot Dennis
Nice shot Dennis
Saturday am hunt Dennis sends a text to Lenny about a potential Cull buck. Mature 8 points are targeted and Lenny gives him the thumbs up reply text and Dennis makes a great shot. Congrats Dennis
Gus gets a shot but unfortunately hits one of the bars that keeps the cattle out. Dang.
No drama, short tracks.

Saturday pm all 4 of us are Sitting blinds and Lenny connects on a nice Buck early then a second buck after the sun goes down. His first double with a bow. We’re all stoked. Later we celebrate with cocktails and tacos and watch the San Francisco/ Green Bay game. Boys being boys is much needed.
Good stuff! Looks like a great time was had!
Big boy
Big boy
Last morning hunt and we all go to new blinds. This Buck is a definite “no shooter” but great fun for me to watch. When he walked in the 3 bucks already at the blind all looked up and then ran away. He was the boss.
Left eye is gone.
Left eye is gone.
A little while later this Buck comes in and I see he’s a mature 8 point with black glands and he’s lost his left eye. I sent this picture to Lenny and he replies “smoke em”. So I fire away. He runs off and I see a cloud of smoke where he crashes. Lenny pics up Dennis before he picks me up and the three of us gather up the buck and head back. Lenny picks up Gus who unfortunately did not get another shot.
Cold windy morning too.
Cold windy morning too.
We had such a fun time on this “buddy management hunt” and hopefully we can do it again next January.
Charley, That last "Big Boy" buck looks like he scraped his front left leg.
7 deer to feed the hungry.
7 deer to feed the hungry.
We then all pack up for our flights home. Lenny knows a guy who takes all 7 deer to feed the needy in his town. Well done all around.
Dennis petting the ranchers dog.
He may have a slight wound on his left leg but sure wasn’t enough to get the “smoke em” text from Lenny:) Ha Ha.

Finally the customary parting team picture. Can’t say enough about the hospitality Lenny showed us.
God bless Texas.
Looks like a lot of fun...congrats to all!
Worst thing about this thread is it was too short!
Thanks for sharing Charlie. Looks like a good time.

Looks fun! Charlie knows how to have a good time.
I'm pretty sure it's against the law to have that much fun... except in Texas. Awesome... Ed F
Congratulations on all of the deer. Looks like you had some great weather.
Good stuff as usual. Way to go, guys. Good times!
Looks like an awesome time. Congrats to all
I don’t know where in Texas y’all were hunting, but there seems to be plenty of targets. In that kind of country, and we have a lot of it, groceries are at a premium. Removing the undesirable bucks and the surplus does just makes good sense. Glad y’all had a good time !
You guys should think about doing a “bloodtrail challenge” next year! One with realistic answers ;-)
Looks like a great crew to spend a few days in camp with!
Great thread, Charlie. Always great having you guys in Texas! I told one of other the other lease members was I was having buddies in from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and California. He was like, really?? How do you know those guys....Bowsite :)
T-roy, I wish I would have thought of the bloodtrail challenge before this weekend, lol. I think Charlie's first buck would have been the best, not for difficulty but volume. Stevie Wonder could have followed it.

Look like "a good time was had by all !" Tks for sharing a fun hunt.
Mature 8s are targeted...
Are there any mature 8s that are off limits? Or do they pretty much always want more points even if it's a really large framed 8?
Dang, Gus! Looks like Lenny set you up at the stands with nothing but the big “off limits” bucks! Definitely some nice ones out there and fun to watch though!
Awesome stuff!! Sounds like fun.
That looks like a blast!
Looks like you got some really good blood on the deer you shot.
What broadhead were you shooting?
Catscratch: Quite a few 8’s are off limit's. The young 8’s and the giant 8’s. Older 8’s that are not getting bigger are cull targets.
Nice! This is what I come here to see
What a great time with good buddies. Texas is a special place.
Jake, Be careful pointing out a leg wound… We look for any reason to talk Lenny into “Corn Bully” material! lol

I would love to trap there... do you know how much attention to detail, for me to take 2 reds last week, Wis public lane. Sounds like a great hunt.
Treeline, It was a new problem for me having bucks be "too big to shoot". It's a nice problem to have though.
What a cool trip with some great guys. Well done!
Well done men!!! Great start to the new year!!
Great thread!! Stacked em up!!
Looks like a great time Charlie, and good shooting!!!

Congratulations on a great hunt, and a great time with friends in "God's Country"!

Here are a few other management bucks I was hoping the guys would see. Lenny

Ambush - Charlie has a passion for life and hunting that is contagious. He is always positive and is not going to miss a hunt, i.e - he is never going to just hang back at camp, he is going out regardless. He appreciates every opportunity and helps you live in the moment. One of my favorite Charlie sayings is "it's later than you think", a reminder for me that every day is a gift.
Good stuff. The pic where ypu captioned "left eye is gone" is an awesome one for us to use to see that bucks shoulder & leg bones. That buck has been hard at work!
Great hunt y’all looked like fun was had by all except the deer thanks for sharing Lewis
I know you guys and how hard it was for you to lay off the big ones.
Sounds like a dang good time! Living life to the fullest.
Fun read, great pics, thanks Charlie, Dennis, Gus, and Lenny.
Looks like a lot of fun. Good thing they are pouring the feed to those deer cuz they are some small looking deer.
Looks like you guys had an awesome trip.
What a great trip! I need better friends....
