I have shot compound bow's in school on a leauge, I only have about 250.00 to spend on a bow. I don't want to hunt out of a tree I want to use a ground blind if that helps. Also would I be better off with a single or double cam? Let me know what I should look for and what I may want to avoid. Thanks
You can get a Mission X-3 for $299.00 which is made by Mathews. They are a great shooting bow for the money. But you will still hve to deck it out with a rest, Sights, and so on and have about $500.00 into it depending on how expesive you go.
Or you can try and go the used rout but unless you know what to look for be careful buying used. But there are deals to be found.
Check out the classified ads for a used bow on archerytalk.com
I doubt you will find very much for $250.00 new. For $250 used you should be able to pick up a good bow with some accessories. I wouldn't get hung up on single or double cam. Find a bow that fits you and fits your pocket book, record what you found and then come back and tell us about it. Some here probably have experience with it and will share it with you.
Check every bow shop around for used bows, as most of us have traded in bows with everything already on them. Then you actually shoot them before you buy and make sure it is the right fit.You probably can pick up a 2-4 year old bow close to your price range that would be $800-$1000 rig new.
Go and get a Bear buckmasters BTR one of the best bows "in my opinion" for the money. heres a pic of a buck I shot last year with it
I had a btr it was one of my first compound bows (i was a late starter) Yes that bow will do the job nicely. It isnt the fanciest, but it is a great bow, and will meet your needs.
thats right, Its all i can afford to. Ill probably have this bow till i die!!!
If it aint broke no need to fix it. It isnt the bow you shoot its all about putting the arrow where it counts.

There are 4 under your price and a few others just a bit over at the link I have pasted.
hey Don - give us a little more info & I'm sure we can all put our heads together and get you set up. We'll need to know the following: draw length - max poundage - right/left hand - release or fingers - aluminum or carbon - is a used bow ok - do you have ANY equipment yet ?
If you can manage to scrape up an extra $30 bucks the bear showdown on bass pro is a awesome choice. I have a coupon code for free shipping i would send you. Tell me your age etc...,and if you are seriouse about becoming a bowhunter i just may have a starter sight (cobra) i will send you for free.lord knows i have a surplus of 100 grain field points-inserts-knocks -kisser button-peep sight if you need them. But only if you are a begining archer.
I'm sure I have at least 2 compounds (used) in the basement. Just taking up space. Only cost would be what you spend on gas to check them out.
Might save a trip if list what luv2bowhunt asked.
Guy's thank's for all the input I will use a release, as far as max poundage I don't think it will be a problem I set a state record in bench press 10 yr's ago and have shot a 70lb compound my friend let me try very well, so he say's. LOL. I think the draw length was 28 or 29" and that was with a release, I'm right handed as far as arrow's I really don't know.
28-29 in draw. Go to a archery shop and get properly measured once you get that info find the bow you can afford. arrow selection will depend on your draw weight-draw length. Use the easton arrow chart to determin that. This may sound a tad confusing, but once you start you will realize it isnt that hard.
Good luck don.
Shot a bunch, find out what fits, then check e-bay. There are some shops that buy last years models, then they sell them at a good price. I got my Hoyt magnatec that way about 6yrs back. You might find something in your price range.
A good place to look is in your local classifieds. With the way the economy is, there should be some deals showing up if not already.

While I 2nd going to a "pro" shop (I use that term loosely) for measurement I highly recommend going "armed" with knowledge.
Use the draw length calculator above to measure your draw length first and then go to the "pro" shop.

Don - where do you live? If you're close to any of us I'm sure we'd be glad to get together w/you and help out first hand.
Dandy Don: I took my nephew out last night to look at bows and get fitted.
I was very surprised with the fitting. I was thinking he would go 30 inches in draw. He's a pretty tall guy. But when the dust settled he fitted best into a 28 inch draw - shooting a release. I guess his arms aren't as long as his legs.
I didn't see any new bows for $250. For $300 - $350 decent bows were available. Then throw in accessories.
Remember also that some bows are draw length specific, i.e., they only come in one draw length. Other bows are adjustable. Draw lengths are adjustable from 26 - 30 inches.
I would not be afraid to shop used. There is good used equipment out there to be had.
With that price range, a good used bow would be a much better buy I think. Just make sure it is right fit, which is more important than kind or price. Jim
Ok, I thought I had a bow but the deal fell thru, so I just got back from the pawn shop and here's what I tried. Buckmaster BTR-199.00, Reflex Express-210.00, Hoyt Carbonite Raptor 249.00, PSE Nova-119.00. All seemed to be in good shape and as I drew each bow and they all smooth. So If you had 250.00 what bow would you pick? The draw length on each of them were about right I just want to make sure I'm not getting something too old or a brand or model that has a history of problems! Thank's Again for all your help!!
none of the above $200 bucks for a used btr is a ripoff. The others are seriously outdated. Apawn shop will sell you crap beleive me there are much better places to buy a used or clearance bow. Stay away from the pawn shops.Ill bet you that pawn shop paid maximum $50 for any bow they had.
u can get a new BTR for under $160 on sale at wally world

I agree, stickbow.
They also have a Jackie Bushman Signature series bow for $249 at wally world. I have not shot it but it has some good reviews.
I would agree, watch the classifieds. You should be able to pick up a pretty nice bow for around $250. Don't be afraid to haggle, you don't get much for trad-in on used bows. Most guys would rather sell that be left sitting with a used bow.
