I live in Sand Springs and hunt around Kiowa. Does anyone know of a cheap (around $8)and reliable source of Rice Bran. Mike
I don't know about the prices, since we didn't get to hunt in that part of the state this year, but I'll bet every feed store in that part of the state has rice bran. It seems to be all the rage in the southeast part of the state. There is a feed store in Kiowa as well. My husband and I have hunting access to land near Kiowa and planned on hunting there last year and this year, but that was ruined by major oilfield activity on the property. Hopefully they will be done by the 2009 archery season. Good luck.
I hate to ask a stupid question but what do you do with rice bran? sorry couldnt stand not knowing. HCA
Okiedeerhunter I know what you mean about the oilfield activity I've been dealing the gas well activity for about the last four years. That whole part of the state is over ran with new wells being drilled. It is tough maybe 2009 will be better for you and your husband. I have used the feed store in Kiowa before but they keep runing out of rice bran. I think they are having a hard time getting it right now. I will keep trying them to see if and when they get some in. Thanks
Hickorycreekarcher I started using rice bran this season and deer love it. Deer will walk over a pile of corn just to get some. I've heard that pigs don't like it but I've got trail cam pics showing them eating it. Racoons, birds, and squirls will not eat it though. You just put it on the ground or on a stump and deer will eat the ground or stump after the rice bran is gone. Great stuff if you can find it. MIke
Or Big V in McAlester. I live and hunt near Kiowa also. Get most my stuff from Big V.
KevinOK I have looked at Atwoods and not been able to find any. Hopefully they will start caring it sometime in the future.
OT Man I will try Big V. McAlester Mill is the company's name that is on the rice bran that I have been getting at Kiowa and here in Sapulpa, and when I look up McAlester Mill on the internet it comes up aka Big V Feeds looks like this may be the answer. Thanks for the input. Mike
whats the going price? i found some at my local feed store for $24 - 40lb bag...how much should be put out at a time? will it work through a feeder?
thanks
OMG I pay 10.00 a bag for 50 lbs
I pay $8.00 to $9.00 sometimes as much as $11.00 for 40 lbs The rice bran you are looking at is probably stablaize. Probaby better than the kind I buy but kinda high. I pour out the whole bag at a time but some of the other hunters on our lease will take half a bag, make 3 or 4 piles in one location then 3 or 4 more piles in other location with the other half. I beleive there are some feeders out there for it but I perfer to just pour it on the ground. I'm going to try pouring it over a salt block this winter. This is kinda new for me to so I'm still trying different ways of applying it. Not sure what I will finally end up with. Look forward to any info that anyone may have on using it or ideas. Anything, within reason, is worth a try. The biggest problem I have had so far is finding a realiable source but I believe OT Man may have come up with a answer. Mike
Help me !!!!! 23.95 for 40lbs Rice Bran Meal . Am I buying the wrong thing or what.
Yep or what. It can be hard to find but $11.00 for a 40 lb bag is high. A good price is $8.00. The bags I've been getting are bagged at McAlester Mill and has a picture of a buck on it. Cat Dog what part of the state are you from? Maybe someone will know where you can buy the cheaper Rice Bran. Mike
thanks for the info...as far as applications...if you pour out a bag in one spot...how long will that last? do you know what makes them crave it like corn or better? is it high protein? will they find it easily? does it have odor similar to corn?
i have been a corn user for years, but this sounds great. I feed all 14+ squirrels, 17+ raccoons, 12 turkeys, and not to mention all the other birds throughout the day...there isn't any corn left when the deer come around...i get mad seeing my camera take pics of coons hanging from my feeder spinning all the corn out for his buddies on the ground...i would pay $24 a bag if it lasted 2 months...that is alot cheaper than corn...
thanks
It is not cheaper than corn. I use a bag a week for one spot. Not sure if this is the best way to apply it but I'll experment this winter. I don't remember how much protein corn has in it. Here is what is on the lable of a 40 lb bag of rice bran.
Guaranteed Analsysis
Crude Protein, min 12.70% Crude Fat, min 13.00% Crude Fiber, max 11.00%
I have had no problems with squirrels, turkeys(although I wouldn't mind feeding them), nor birds, pigs will eat it but they don't seem to go crazy for rice bran like they do corn. Horses and cows like it and will stay there and eat it till is gone. I do not know what makes deer crave it I assume it's the protien. I have also heard it is what is in Come'R'Deer. As far as deer finding it, the only baiting that I've had any luck with, be it corn, rice bran, whatever, is if I put it on a food plot or will used trail. The deer find it because they have to step over it. It does not smell like corn it has a smell of it's own kind of like corn meal but different. Sorry I don't have a better discription. Mike
FX4Hauler , I'm from Stillwater all of 61 yrs . Stillwater Mill is where we buy all are feed .

man i can remember driving to our usuall places to turn our dogs out n just hope that there will be some coon tracks in the creek when we got there now them suckers are everywhere.
Cat Dog If I remeber right when I was trying to find the cheaper rice bran they did not carry it. Maybe if it becomes more popular they will. How do you apply it? I've not used it for very long so I'm not sure of the best way. Mike
I've used it about as long as you have . It seems to work good . no birds or coons . Now, I put this right next to my corn . My bow season is winding down, we are after a big one ,pics show us he is big ,around 165. The cold has shut us down .
I don't mind feeding the hogs or turkeys, but I'm sick of shooting at raccoons.
I'm sure you just spread it around on the ground. I doubt you'd want to integrate it into your feeder..I'd be afraid it would draw moisture and gum up the feeder in the worst way.
Pouring it on the ground does work. Just costly and is gone within a week. I guess what I'm looking is a way to make a bag last long and being able to put in more locations. That's why I'm going to try pouring it over a salt/?mineral block this winter to see if when the rice bran is gone the deer will keep coming back to the salt/mineral block. Maybe drill some holes in the block so that the rice bran will ?penetrate the block leaving a rice bran smell and taste. Don't know if it will work but it's worth a try. I have not bought a salt block in a long time I'm hoping that it is still cheap. We'll see.
I'm told that rice bran is all come here deer . Several feed company in the area have told me this .
I have heard that also. If you look at the C'Mere Deer review a lot of hunters say that it doesn't work. On out lease anyway rice bran has worked everytime.
Has anyone tried using it in a gravity feeder, like a pvc pipe tied to a tree. How long does it take the deer to start eating it? Daren
I have used gravity feeders my whole life. They are cheap to make, easy to fill, and the deer eat out of them so fast I can't keep them full (along with the coons).
Plus you can get great shots with your camera!
Ok, I've been feeding Bran and Corn for 10 days now . The Deer eat it , but so far , not as good as corn . I've got pictures of Doe ,standing in the Bran and eating corn . I think we need to try this from Aug . on and see.
I'm think about making a gravity feeder for rice bran out of a 55 gallon barrel. I think I can put a couple hundered pound in one. The coons and birds shouldn't be a problem.
broke down and bought the expensive stuff - cause i am too intrigued by this thread...this is high protein supplement for race horses...designed for energy and body heat...just what the deer need this time of year...put about 5 lbs on ground where my corn feeder is but no corn in a while...i know the deer travel the area, but had no deer pics in several weeks...9 hours later i had 4 deer standing over it and eating it...took about 30 pics of several does/yearlings feeding it...first pic of them since summer...
seems to be found easy...smells like dry milk formula for bottle calves...fairly noticable odor unlike corn...they found it quick...and i am ready to hunt this evening!
It was a sad day in the state of Oklahoma when they made it legal to bait deer.
I did not read all the posts above, because I thought I might get sick after reading a couple.
Don't you guys have any dignity left at all?
No, I guess I don't have any dignity left.
But I damn sure got a full freezer! How bout you, Mr. Ethics Police?
Tall Paul,
I use any legal means of harvesting a deer, including throwing out some corn, or something like that. I also take advantage of 315+ FPS bows as well. Oh I forgot to mention how AWESOME camo patterns are now. What about the scents?:)
AJAX, I'M your man . With you all the way !!!!!! My freezer is full and I'm going for 1 more.
There is a simple answer to this problem. If you don't want to bait don't. My grandson shot his first deer this past weekend over rice bran. He's happy so is PaPa.
I may have found you a place, I will check and find out if my lead is good and let you know.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Sorry, forgot all about posting back. I found a place that carries it (Stillwater Milling) but they are not cheap. About $18 for 40lbs.
Probably stablized Rice Bran should cost from $8.00 to $11.00
i have to say this rice bran has showed some real promise. i bought the $24 /bag stuff and i pour out about 3 lbs every 3 days...i have taken my corn feeder down and i have had more pics in the last month of deer and less pics of squirrels and coons than in the previous 4 months combined...
hopefully this hi protein will help grow racks not just make them faster like race horses...but as for now even the expensive stuff is cheaper than corn over the course of time - considering camera batteries and everything!
this guy made it to the 16th - hope to see him around this fall...
They sure like it. It's hard to put it out if you got hogs on your property. The deer wont get a chance to get any. Four or five hogs will eat all you can put out in one night.
