writer How do you know the above as in stone? Just curious ...... I'd love to believe I drew a tag this year with that chance at the optional mule deer as well.
I just heard the same thing from a reputable source quoting Mike Hayden, Secretary of Wildlife and Parks, that all NR apps drew successful. I heard 37% of Mule Deer tags were drawn and all units will have leftovers.
That's crazy that there are so many tags being given. 4,500 tags of just leftover tags! Doesn't Iowa give 6,000 out to NR all together? And they even have a higher deer population & more habitat to support more hunters.
I wish there was something effective we could do. Seems every year, a little bigger piece of the pie is taken to commericalize hunting & lessen the deer managment in Kansas. I have no problem with NR's coming to KS on a limited draw basis.. but everybody drawing a tag and having 4,500 leftover is ridiculous.
Quote: "And they even have a higher deer population & more habitat to support more hunters. "
...that, in my opinion, is exactly what we should be looking at. I don't care if they give out 1 tag or 1,000,000. Whatever they give out should be based on good population data. Take the number of deer that should be harvested by region, subtract the expected number to be harvested by residents and the number leftover should be available for non-residents.
It should have ZERO to do with out of state demand and everything to do with health of the deer herd and carrying capacity of the land.
If that is what KDWP is doing, great! ...but I don't think it is.
if the results are known, and the information is being leaked everywhere, WHY NOT POST THE RESULTS?
geeeeeeeesh, 3 high school nerds could write software to do a draw and publish the results and it not take 30 minutes to complete that draw with the results
and what's the purpose of a draw when you know before hand you're going to match the demand and have 4500 left over?
Welcome to the Application Status Site for KDWP! All nonresidents were successful in drawing a whitetail either sex deer permit. For mule deer results call 620-672-5911
I know a couple intelligent non-residents that hunt in Kansas. They're smart enough to know the hunting is going down hill very quickly. (Both have had past success on public ground.) Both of them wish Kansas would go back to a limited draw. Too bad all non-residents aren't that smart.
I didn't know that non-residents had any kind of say so in the number of tags issued. HMMMM!!! Guess i'm not very intelligent after all. Let's see, I entered the drawing just as KDWP has set up, got drawn, yep, it's official, i'm not very smart.
Many NR and residents alike realize that if NR tags are virtually OTC the public lands will be over run with people, access to private land is going to get much more difficult and expensive, and quality is going to go down due to much more pressure.
I have heard the same sentiments as KSQ2 from the handful of NR I am friends with. Better to have a chance at a giant without tons of competition every few years then have a poor hunt every year.
Congrats to all who drew a tag. Good luck this fall.
I'm a non-resident Kansas deer hunter that agrees with KSQ2 and Matt. The OTC NR tag thing sucks. Quality IS going downhill. Base tag numbers on biology, not economy. It only hurts us NR's in the long run.
I'm not saying that i don't agree with a limited draw. I know for most going to Kansas is for one reason only. Sure, I would love to harvest a big ole Kansas buck. About 24 years ago, me and my brother got into deer hunting, couple years later started at it with the bows. After school, he joined the military and wound up living in Kansas as a result for the past 16 or 18 years. Last year was the first year i applied for a tag to hunt out there. needless to say, i didn't end up tagging out. 400 bucks for nothing. Big brother ended up shooting a big doe the week i was there though. After 20 some years of him hunting out there and me hunting in Mo. for 20 some years, last year was the first time i was able to high 5 him and pat him on the back after a bowkill. Quality hunt? Darn right it was. Made for memories to last a lifetime. If that makes me not smart and unintelligent, so be it, that's the way i would rather be. Sounds like you all need to quit whining and acting like you own the deer out there. If all you residents need a limited draw, petition together and try and get it done. Crying and whining and telling me i'm unintelligent is not going to get it done. See you fellas in November.
I am also a Non Res and agree with Matt(also know him) and agree that I would much rather have a chance at a giant and only draw once in a handful of years....but its about MONEY to the state. I drew an archery tag along with the mule deer stamp.
I got the optional muley tag - I assume I drew my 1st choice unit 1, who the heck know, nothing is posted still and I forgot to ask that question today ...
I am one who doesn't have a problem with NR and would love to start hunting in other states in the future. What I do have a problem with and what absolutely fires me up and will include me as a WHINER is the fact that you have the nerve to come onto the KANSAS page(where nobody asked your opinion) and make a stupid comment like that. If people can't have a legitimate discussion and express how they feel before taking action then I guess there is no need for us to use this site.
It's great that you had a good hunt without tagging a giant, thousands of others do the same thing every year. Also, my hat is off to your brother for his service and I think you were intelligent for coming to hunt together. That is priceless and price is not an issue if you are already able to pay to hunt in a so called "big buck state" anyway, not to mention with a close family member. As for not harvesting your buck, if every NR or resident took a deer home every year with a bow we wouldn't have a herd left to hunt. Our numbers are nothing like yours and in no way is the structure so why does everyone come here trying to compare.
I'm not sure about what happened in the past but almost every NR that comes on this page has to say something about how Kansas residents are a bunch of whiners. Ask anyone who has hunted here for very long and you will find that we are some of the most laid back, down to earth hunters that will do just about anything for another at the drop of a hat. I just get tired of all the bashing coming from those visiting another state. I know I would be appreciative of those I had the chance to share the woods with. Maybe I'm wrong.
I asked this on the big board, not sure if anyone knows this but how have the number of tags allocated changed over the years? Just curious to see the numbers. In 2008 they gave 17600, what about years prior? The numbers for 09 were supposed to be the same as 08, so did the economy lead to all those unfilled tags.
I think they shouldn't sell the leftovers, if ya don't apply, your out of luck.
" PRATT-- There is good news for nonresident deer hunters this year: all applicants for Nonresident Whitetail Either Sex Deer permits were successful. This is the first year all applicants have been successful, and this success is directly attributable to changes in the permit allocation process made by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) last year. "
The number of leftover Nonresident Whitetail Either Sex Deer permits includes the following: Unit 1 -- 53; Unit 2 -- 18; Unit 3 -- 12; Unit 4 -- 36; Unit 5 -- 6; Unit 6 -- 242; Unit 7 -- 28; Unit 8 -- 608; Unit 9 -- 210; Unit 10 -- 824; Unit 11 -- 744; Unit 12 -- 479; Unit 13 -- 339; Unit 14 -- 407; Unit 15 -- 242; Unit 16 -- 325; Unit 17 -- 5; and Unit 18 -- 74.
What's dumb about me entering the Kansas draw? What's dumb about me getting drawn? Anything dumb about the reason i hunt or why i hunt? I don't think anyone will have anything worth reading for any of these questions. Kansas limited tags, I'm SMART enough to know that's part of the reason the quality is what it is out there and that it would be good deer management for the way of several years ago to come back into effect. Do you think the one buck, any weapon for residents is going to help the quality? It's going to take the residents to get the ball rolling to get something done about the draw system, not us NR. Let's see, I had Kansas residents show me around, walk me to the tree that they had treestands set up in, set up a couple treestands for me,let me hunt out of a few of their stands, drive me around and show me the lay of the land, actually do all of the homework for me, so I do know the quality of people out in Kansas. DOUBLEDROP- If Mo. ever becomes recognized as a big buck state like Ks. or Ia. and you came here to hunt, you probably would get bashed on like us NR get from some out there, but mark it down right now. You won't see any of the bashing strictly blaming NR as to the problem with the deer herd by kenman421's name, you won't see anywhere around kenman421's name calling people stupid just for buying a NR tag for here in Mo. Like yourself, I also would try to help the people out as best i could to have a quality and memorable hunt. As for my comments earlier, i apoligize to all that was offended as they were not directed towards the majority of the Kansas residents.
I know better than to keep this going, but I can't help myself:)
The issue is not solely with NR. You bring up a good point on the resident any season tag. You should know that many of us have wrote letters to KDWP commisioners, our representatives, and attended meetings trying to keep rules from changing that will be detrimental to allowing deer to mature. Yet rules keep getting changed. NR can do the same thing if they feel strongly about the direction deer management is going in KS.
I could ramble on forever, but it is beating a dead horse. If I was you I would hunt here every year as well. My issue isn't with Non-Resident hunters, it never has been, it is with the direction Deer Management has went by KDWP. We all hated T-tags, but to get rid of them we virtually have OTC NR tags.
XMan-
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but most units had an increase in tag numbers for 2009. There was a break down of the proposed numbers at a Commission Meeting a few months ago. For example I think that Unit 1 went from 400 some tags to 600 some tags for 2009. Don't quote me though;)
Hey everybody this is Ruthless, Kenman421's brother, we all just need to drop this topic before someone gets really upset, these things are out of our control, we can try to change things as much as we can but if people don't want to listen, they won't. We all need to sit back and realize that we all still can and have places to hunt weather residents or NR, because like everyone is saying it's all about the money, most NR probably hunt in other states to be with family and friends, because of jobs, it's just the way it is. We all need to be thankful we still have places to hunt with family and friends, because it is going to get to a point where it will be a rich mans game to hunt, and all us hard working blue collar people will be out of luck. Sad it will probably come to this, but I feel that is the direction it is going. So I hope everyone has a good season, and just sit back and enjoy it with your family and friends and go after that big one you are all after. Talk to you all later.
I'm not complaining. The way the economy is going down the tubes and states all over the country not being able to pay bills, perhaps the sale of KS.deer tags will at least keep our KDW&P solvent. I think the biggest complaints of resident hunters is the shortage of public hunting areas in the state. We have a lot of Walk-in-land but most of the land that is available is for bird hunters not deer hunting. Hopefully we can get KDW&P to realize this some day. The first thing a NR hunter will ask his when is the rut. The rut is around the first of Nov. so this is when most of them come. Where do they head? To the public areas. Their intentions are usually to shoot a big buck but since they have paid $400 for a deer tag you can't blame them for going home with something. Eventually the whole thing will work out. It doesn't take too many dry trips at $400 a crack for some one to learn their lesson.
i can tell you one reason that the NR tags have been increased, the cabin I am trying to reserve for November in one of your state parks is booked the ENTIRE month of November and has been for a while. The others are filling up quickly. If you think your deer management is bad, which I agree having OTC tags for NR flies in the face of managing age structure, try living in WI. At least your NR tags are prices high enough to dissuade some casual weekend warrior hunters. I am looking forward to making the trip again this year. I loved Kansas, thought the people were very freindly, and saw some of the biggest deer of my life. I just hope that there aren't a billion folks crammed into teh state park we were hunting.
I paid $505 for a single deer tag that allows me either mule deer or whitetail, either sex.
I'm insane :( If it wasn't for the good folks that invite me out, I'd never be able to go and enjoy Kansas. I actually use to hate Kansas, because its brutal to drive across on the way to Colorado! Lack of mountains and forests for the most part ...... anyway, having hunted Kansas the past decade, I've learned to love the country, its uniqueness and the people, who are gold for the most part.
KDFW has much to be desired, you know its getting bad when even the non-residents aren't happy with the way its all handled !!
good luck hunting everyone, enjoy it while we still have jobs and the money to go
Lack of cabins is the least of most hunters problems, I can and have slept on the ground. The biggest problem is when you try to hunt and have a tree stands in every other tree. Any more a good day is when you see a deer, a great day is when you don't have an other hunter walking under your stand.
I also drew a tag again this year. My mother can't wait til November when I come back. When I get lucky and get a deer she has meat in the freezer. I take almost 2 weeks and visit with family and friends during this time. Hope EVERYONE has a safe and enjoyable season and can get to hunt as often as they can.
THIS VISITOR IS CURRENTLY UNDER WATCH FOR
DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR
Another stick in the spokes is that when all the NR show up to hunt the Fall River and Toronto State park wildlife areas they will be sorely disapointed, as the high water(for the 2nd year in a row) was backed up to maximum flood pool for near 2 months and all during the birthing times.
Where they going to go then? Two days on either one of those areas and you'll be scratching your head.
I went down there (both places) fishing/looking for tracks 3 weeks ago and never jumped or even seen a deer. Tracks are nearly non existant.
The (NR) have been duped by the sellers of the deer. But thanks for the contributions.
hey all u kansas hunters i am a NR an i heard there r 150 class bucks behind every tree!!! I think im gonna get me 1 of those OVER THE COUNTER TAGS an pursue one of them!!
Hey mathews-bowhunter76 or is it hoyt-bowhunter76,
I hope you go and get one of those tags, I welcome all NR to come and hunt the great state of Kansas. I've had people come from SC,Ohio and a few others states. All having a great hunt with friends and family. I take the whole month of Nov off to hunt we have kill plenty of book deer all on public land. The number of deer on public is down,so there is not a 150" deer around every tree. But I do have one 165" deer for Kenman421 behind a new tree for him this year. I let him go last year, but it's got Kenmans name all over him this year. Just dropping a line letting you know Kenman421 you are welcome to come and hunt anytime with me. Looks like Hoyt-bowhunter76 needs to do his homework. Good luck,Good hunting and congrad to all of the NR that got there tags.
mac34 lol!!!! were kenman goes mathews bowhunter76 goes were blood brothers of deer slaying if i have 2 i will sit at the bottom of his tree 4 the wack on the 165" lmao!
I somehow got distracted and didn't get my application in on time. After hearing that everyone drew I am not as disappointed that I wasn't even in the draw. Too much of a good thing is never good.
