Interested in POW Spring 2013 Bear Hunt
Alaska
Contributors to this thread:
I am interested in coming to Alaska this spring (2013) for a spot and stalk black bear hunt. I have always dreamed of cruising the coastline and glassing up bears. I would also like to do some fishing if possible for some salmon. Please post or message me if any of you have done this and willing to help me out.
Thanks!

I'm looking for a partner to do a hunt like this myself. Prince of Whales Island is now a draw for Black Bear for non-residents. You have to put in by December 17 THIS YEAR for Spring 2014 hunts. You can use this year's license ($85) or the 2014 license but I believe you need it to enter the drawing. I went up there this past June with my family to scope it out. We flew to Ketchikan, spent the night at the Best Western across from the Ferry Terminal. The next day we took the Ferry over to POW. Awesome, gorgeous, ride. Actually stood out on the deck with my binos spotting bears that were scavenging along the beaches. You can rent a vehicle on the island and drive the 1000 miles of roads (gas is expensive though).
My thought is to get a boat and do a more remote hunt, and possibly look into setting up bait stations under tree stands. Also as you mention cruise along shore until you spot a bear on the beach, then go downwind and sneak back to him.
I have a 16 foot cataraft with 15 hp outboard that I may possibly ship up there depending on the cost vs. renting a boat. Brian
Have cabin on POW....Kurt

I have a cabin rental business with a rental in Whale Pass towad the north end of the Island.
Blacktail Bob is great bowhunter with experience on POW. Matter of fact, his ugly mug was just on the latest episode of Bowhunter Television where I believe the guys stayed in the cabins he mentioned. Good Luck!
Actually, the ugly mug belongs to Lon, the handsome young looking mug belongs to Larry and the mug in the background, seldom seen was the Bowhunter. But, thanks for the backhanded compliment anyway, I knew what you meant Kyle.
Bob,
Is a first class hunter and a gentleman. I can attest to that!
His accommodations are terrific.
You will not be disappointed by going there.
We hunted there a few years ago and one of the things we was not able to find was a decent map of the place, but we had a great time, good luck.
Best map of the Island is the US Forest Service Road Map.
Just returned from our hunt this year. Killed a 19 & 6 bear and was after a much bigger 2nd bear that just wouldn't cooperate and come to the bait while I was there. Hunted that particular bear for nearly a month but didn’t get him. I passed on a couple others that were at least as big as my first bear while waiting on the big boy.
Bob,
Congratulations on your hunt.
Hope you and Lisa, are well.
