What the heck is that? It can't be a groundhog since they have been extinct since the coyotes over ran the state!! Maybe it's a porcupine that has shed his quills or maybe a prairie dog from North Dakota that migrated here and found a cornfield!!
It is a Chinese groundhog that has dug too deep!
Back from Nebraska. Struck out in the Chadron area for a Merriams. Saw tons of birds, but they were all still in their winter flocks on private land cattle feed lots.
With Nebraska tags still in my pocket, I decided to pass on Kansas and hunt public ground in SW Nebraska instead. Arrowed a couple "shortbeards" with full fans and spurs. Short bearded turkeys seemed to be the norm in the area. A local told me it was due to the beards freezing off in the snow.
First bird taken April 1st. Came in strutting with a half dozen hens.
Second bird taken April 3rd. Came in with three other toms. Would have sworn they were all jakes, until they began strutting. Wish I would have had that third tag in my pocket, as the other three birds hung around for a few minutes after the shot.
Very nice Paul....gettin 'er done with archery gear !
Nice job Paul. Congratulations
Great job Paul. Way to stay after them. Were you hunting alone?
Hey Dave.
Yep, this trip was solo. Made several decisions on the fly....and the only one I had to convince was myself. LOL!
Nunavut Canada March 18th
Congrats Grant!
...and I thought it was cold in Nebraska...LOL!
An adventure to remember!
Grant and PAV, congrats, nice trophies.
Been a crazy season on the farm. Loggers are in the process of harvesting 2200+ trees. Turkey sightings have been scarce compared to the norm ..for good reason.
Ended my season yesterday morning with this jake. Had three jakes walk cautiously through my setup early. Sat a few hours listening to the soothing sounds of chainsaws, falling trees, and skidders. A pair of jakes came in gobbling mid-morning and put on quite a show. Dropped this bird in his tracks at eight paces.
Found a nice patch of white mushrooms on the way out of the woods. Not a bad morning at all!
Congrats pav. You should be well stocked up on turkey breast for the rest of the year now!
Way to go PAV. Wait a minute....is that a high-level fence on that turkey? LOL, congrats. I agree with Sticksender, you should be well stocked up on turkey meat.
Hey Mike. I walked into that 4 strands of barbed wire in the dark one morning. It's plenty high! LOL!
2" beard, 25lbs and 34 mm spurs...
Heaviest turkey, biggest spurs and smallest beard! It appeared as if it froze off.
Nice bird Soiuxme. Perhaps some archer gave it a shave as well? Congrats.
INbowdude,
The beard was yellow at the end, perhaps it froze off?
Still waiting on the spawn. But this one is a good one.
This is my second bird of the year and although this isn't a archery bird I thought I would share it. Killed on April 27th, 2013 in the mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico. I was able to complete my Royal Slam with this Gould's turkey.
Very little action this morning, but this big female made a fatal mistake.
Nice fish Paul, looks like I better get back out and try again
Jordan connected on a good fish Friday night
Way to go Jordan! You're getting to be an old pro at that.
Just returned from my annual Florida alligator hunt. We had a great time and filled all 4 of our tags. The first to score was my daughter-in-law (7 1/2 months pregnant). She did a great job and got a very nice 8 1/2' gator.
Next to get a gator was my daughter Emily and she did awesome in taking a solid 7' gator that will soon be a nice wallet, purse, and other alligator skin products. Plus it provided some fantastic gator tail meat.
The 3rd gator to get in the boat was taken by my good friends son Daniel. He got a solid 8 1/2' gator as well.
The last to fill out of quota of tags was taken by my son Jeff. He also did a great job and his we took by a little different method and we had to stalk it from land and wrestle it like on TV on the ground. He then had to pack it quite a ways back to the boat.
I really like this picture. It shows Jeff hauling out his 8' gator, that weighed more than he does.
Looks like you had a great time, thanks for the pictures.
Wow you guys have definitely mastered the art of gator slayin'....congrats on the haul !
Agree Terry, that is an impressive picture and unique for gator hunting. Thanks for sharing.
I had a pretty good July hunt myself.
30 minutes after the jackal came in, a nice barren female gemsbok stopped by.
A couple of days later, I finally got a crack at a kudu.
We then moved on to another ranch to try for some other game. This little piggy went to market for the rancher.
Several stalks later and a cat-and-mouse game, I finally got a crack at a nice stallion.
On the last couple hours of daylight on the last day, we got lucky and got a 24 yard broadside shot at this little feller.
Quite the African adventure Mike....congrats!
Yeah Mike! I think you had a pretty impressive July hunt as well. Great photos and animals. Congrats!
I leave in 19 hours for Alaska caribou! Hopefully I will have a photo or two to share.
I need to stop checking this site at work! That buffalo photo has been in my head all day. Quite an impressive animal Mike!
Good luck with the caribou Terry!
Thanks guys.
Best of luck Terry on those caribou. I'm looking forward to your report and pictures when you get back. Dang, now caribou are stuck in my head.
Not a bow kill but I'm posting it anyway. Yukon, 8/14/2013
Try again with the picture
Great looking Dall, congrats. How far was the shot?
INbowdude, between 150 and 170 yards. Didn't have my range finder handy and knew he was inside 200 so wasn't too concerned. He was 11 years old, tight curl, full and a quarter, 38" length per side. Perfect ram in my dreams. Different view.
Just a great looking ram. Who was the outfitter?
Wow mike way to go man. Give some details on that buffalo please. Spot and stalk or over water. Wow.
My 11 year olds buck taken at the last minute of youth weekend Hendricks County
Congrats Kyle. That is an awesome buck for anybody let alone an 11 year old. Way to go kiddo.
Nice job Mike. Looks like a great trip
Early season doe that will provide many great meals for my family.
Western Wyoming (Bridger NF) - 10/03/2013
Way to go Paul! Great looking animals.
Congrats Paul. Hope to run into you at some point to hear the stories.
Congrats to all on the great trophies.
Paul I'll bet you'd agree that a mature bull moose, even a Shiras, is a gigantic looking son-of-a-gun when you walk up to them laying dead on the ground? Congrats on gettin 'er done in Wyoming.
Here's my Shiras bull, arrowed this past Saturday. Hunted 17 days straight in search of a monster but never found him. With a couple days to spare I found one that was good enough.
Great job on some great animals guys.
Congrats! Love the Bullwinkles.
Sticksender, where did you hunt and what unit? Nice bull.
Congrats to all. Great buck there Matt.
PAV, you da man!
Sticksender, where did you hunt and what unit? Nice bull.
Congrats to all. Great buck there Matt.
PAV, you da man!
INbowdude it was in Idaho unit 64, which is near Rexburg in the southeastern part of the state. Incidentally, that area is also home to some of the best fly fishing in the world, with the South Fork of the Snake River, Henry's Fork, and the Teton River. Two of those I floated in search of a bull moose, but didn't take time to fish.
Interestingly, while I was there, a friend showed me the spot on the river where the potential new World Archery Record Shiras Moose was just killed a few weeks before my arrival. The hunter shot it with a home-made longbow, home-made arrows, and home-made steel broadheads. It was green-measured in velvet (now stripped off) at an unofficial 190-5/8 by Roger Atwood, who lives nearby. If that holds close after the 60 days mandatory drying period it would blow away the old world record by several inches.
My son Tyler shot this nice young doe yesterday. It will provide many very tasty meals.
Grant, you are the bear meister! This time next week Tyler and I will be "back home in Indiana" and trying to connect on a nice Hoosier buck!
How's the rut progressing?
Nice job everyone. Those are all great looking animals
Shot this buck with my recurve Tuesday morning. Can't wait to get a score on him.
Fantastic buck Birdsong! Congrats!
We need some more photos of that beast please wow
Nice buck Birdsong! Congrats! NY Bowman things are starting to heat up. I had a two year old buck chasing a doe around my stand last night.
It wont let me post more pics but I will keep trying. The rack scored 182 5/8 green p&y nt.
Big congrats birdsong!
That buck is an absolute stud!...and taken with a recurve to boot. What a fantastic accomplishment!
Put a good arrow through this buck Saturday morning...November 2nd @ 8:30am (pre-time change).
First saw him climbing a point to the north. He was roughly eighty yards out, headed away from my stand.
Stopped him with the grunt. Turned him with a snort/wheeze. Reeled him in to 18 yards with a tending grunt. Watched him fall about fifty yards from the stand.
birdsong and pav, wow....congratulations to you....those are both beautiful bucks with great character.
Paul, you have had a great year!
Agree with you all, you guys are having a great season. Just cool to see the bucks and read the stories.
Gerald's ten point...arrowed the morning of 11/10
Dad's eight point...arrowed the morning of 11/8
72 years young and still getting it done!
Gerald, great buck and the Vice family is stacking up some great ones.
My son Tyler shot a last day buck on Friday and I killed a nice sized doe.
Congrats to Tyler on his last day whitetail buck!
Congrats on the doe Terry...and on a job well done passing along your passion for bowhunting. Pardon my grammer...but you sure done good!
Wow, that photo is sure making me feel old! The young boy I remember is all manned up!
My 15 yr old son and I had a good season with our recurves in Switzerland County.
Woody, you guys had a fantastic year! Congratulations!
Sure is fun hunting with your boy and a stick and string.
Thanks Terry! I've been shooting traditional stuff since '91 and my son Drew has shot nothing but recurves and longbows since he was old enough to shoot. His 15 year old eyes and coordination makes him a much better hunter/shot than his old man is! :)
Slug Gun/Indiana Dunes State Park/Nov. 18th
Chris S, awesome picture! Well done!
Congrats to everyone so far!
Oh yeah, nice one Chris and JTV.
Still at it and shot this big ol' girl this morning.
I didn't weigh her, but she was really hard to get in the truck by myself.
That's one giant nanny....congrats Terry!
That is a monster doe. Congrats Terry.
Looks like one of those monster Ohio deer. Buddy of mine from south of Zanesville area got one that dressed out at 308. Not really out of the ordinary he said? It would take 3-4 does around here to make that weight!
Bearded Hen - December 26th
Awesome Paul! That's a perfect ending to an incredible season.
