The deadline for Nevada desert bighorn,California bighorn, elk, and mule deer applications is Monday, April 21st.
If you're not applying for points you should be at least building points. Unlike Colorado where there's only a handful of Trophy units, Nevada has a lot of units where 75% of the harvest are 6x6 with 40+ % of them having 50 inch main beams which are great elk.
are hoy sure those elk are not raised on elk farms ?
I think Nevada does their elk like we do hatchery trout. There's a big state run elk farm and they raise them and release them like we do trout. They usually put a couple old breeder bulls in the truck too.
If you're out there during hunting season you'll see the stocking truck go by with a string of cars and trucks behind it. They pull up to the edge of the woods and open the gate. Most everyone gets an elk right after they leave the truck. They used to circle the truck, but as many hunters were killed as elk. Then they passed a law that made all the hunters stay on one side of the truck as they were released. It's a lot safer now.
Seriously though, it might be a great place to start building points for a future hunt. The way Nevada is managing their elk now has started producing bulls like Arizona is famous for. Due to habitat it's never going to produce the numbers of elk like Colorado does, but the quality is great. They have several units producing 350+ bulls.
The "bad " part is that like Arizona you have to buy a hunting license to accumulate points. But then you can either apply or build points for elk, deer, California bighorn, and Desert Bighorn for about 20 dollars apiece. Nevada is also pumping out some huge mule deer too. Again, not the numbers like CO and WY but a number of units cranking out 180+ bucks.
Something to think about. I havnt been to many places except Vegas in Nevada but there is some god hunting there I am told.
I'm still building points. I've got 11 for deer, elk, and California bighorn, and 19 for Desert bighorn going in the draw this year. I apply for sheep every year. You get to make up to 5 picks if you want. On the deer and elk, I apply for 1 pick a piece for deer and elk. I put in for the very best elk and deer unit. Chances are I won't draw but if I do it will be the best unit. When I get to when I really want to try I'll change my strategy.
I did get my PY mountain lion about a hundred miles north of Las Vegas in January of 1993.
