I've been playing since the beginning. Always apply for an archery bull tag. Last I checked, the odds were something like, 1 in 60,000.

Yeah, but the money goes to the DNR and you have to play to have a chance and somebody gets tags every year.

....or wait in Mingo county for one to cross the line.......:) for free.....

I don't think it will be free. In fact I wouldn't be suprised if they were in the process of increasing the penalties to 5,000.00 and loss of hunting privleges for 5 years in the very near future.

It's a lot harder sneaking an elk home than it is a deer.

Plus, I wouldn't be suprised at all if any potentially released elk have a tiny GPS transmitter inserted so they can track movement or perhaps show up at someone's home looking for an elk. Technology is amazing nowdays.

How many do they give out? Is there a chance of ever seeing one if you draw a tag? It does seem like I remember someone on here killing oe down there.

They're giving out a little over a thousand total tags this year. That includes bull, cow, youth and everything.

I'm not sure what the success ratio is but I think it's pretty high.

From: gobbler

Last year 89% of rifle bull hunters were successful, and 76% of archery bull hunters were successful.

It looks like they're giving out around 250 bull tags and 750 cow tags this year. When you apply there is 4 choices. Rifle bull or rifle cow Archery bull or archery cow

And you can pick any 2 choices.

Nonresidents get no more than 10% which is comparable to the quota of most western states.

That will be about 25 nonresident tags this year. Definately not a lot, and a pretty small chance at getting a tag but somebody will get them and have a great hunt. To me it's worth 20 dollars for a chance.
