I was out checking cameras today and there an outburst of noise and ruckus above me in the canopy, which was pretty low but thick. My thought was squirrel but I've never heard gray or red squirrels make these kinds of sounds and so loud....followed by the critter just bailing out through the tree top foliage. I thought maybe a fisher chasing a squirrel. Never got a good look at it but it definitely didn't seem like anything I had seen before.
Later on about 200 yards away we entered the timber from a mowed trail and again a hell of a racket above followed by a really large squirrel bailing out of the tree, hitting the ground and disappearing almost immediately. Huge squirrel with big bushy orange tail! Dare I admit this...my wife was with me and also saw it. No question in my mind it was a Fox Squirrel.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen them in NYS and how far north in the state?
