Is anyone else noticing any acorns dropping?
I have quite a few acorns dropping right now and they are green as a frog!
I thought it was the wind, but last evening with the dog on a potty break - I could hear them falling. No wind.
What gives? Any thoughts?
Oak wilt? Do the trees look healthy?
Nope - trees are healthier than me! More falling. I was wondering if anyone else was experencing that and what may have cause the premature dropping.
Our Acorns are mighty small right now,I have been watching and not much growing
Low oaktosterone causes the premature dropping I think.
Insects? Could it be possible that the long hard winter, late spring and then the heavy rains stressed the trees?
Hickory nuts are dropping on some of my friends property too.
Pasq - are you ever serious? Funny stuff!
I'm not sure what is going on - last night again - no wind 10 PM, acorns dropping.
Wierd stuff.
You may be seeing a bad infestation of acorn weevils this year. Is there a hole in each acorn?
This is a bad year for acorns on my red oaks. I've looked at several trees and cannot see a single acorn. Maybe the bad winter had something to do with it. I believe that is what killed or set back several of the younger trees.
The only reason I thought perhaps the bad winter may have set them back, is that is exactly what is going on with our apple trees. Most of them have pretty much nothing on them this year, talked to someone at an orchard and they said it's a result of the winter.
I've got apples for the first time in 3 years. Not sure why the acorns are dropping?
I'll look and see if I can spot any bore holes in the acorns - when I got some light. Now...I gotta clean a mess of crappies!
Acorns look fine here in Calumet County and have been dropping allot this week. Anyone else notice a pickup in the acorn activity?
The AKERNS been dropping for weeks by me - green! Someone told me the bears like those as well - dont know!
Not a crapologist but examining some bear scat this morning with the area warden. He say's what I am not seeing are the blackberry seeds. The dung was heavy with seeds and a blue stain. He thought the buckthorne may be responsible!
He was going out on patrol and said he'd watch and see what was in bloom and let me know!
Yep, I hear the acorns dropping while I'm baiting ...bear that is! :^)
Today I was out cutting downed trees off the Birkie trail near Hayward from the storm of last week. The oaks that were down were loaded with acorns. The hail nailed a lot of trees in the area so some are green and down but the trees still standing are load in that area. I also found some ripe acorns on the ground in one of my hunting areas nearby.
Tons in Ozaukee County in the last week. All seemed good. Nothing out of the ordinary though.
Seeing the same as 10orbetter in Washington county.
Buddy up in Clark Co said acorns dropped like crazy when he was bear hunting. Columbia Cty they are dropping like crazy also and are big this year.
Must be good because the animals are eating them.
I have heard that some bear baits have dropped off with the rain of acorns around here.
Smokey that is what my buddy said. Had bears hitting the baits then it dropped off to hardly anything touching them.
