how many p&y bucks
Pennsylvania
Contributors to this thread:
The increase your chance at a p&y thread got me curious. Who here has shot a net p&y buck in PA.I can think of a few that I measured for bowsiters. Feel free to post up some pics and a story.
I got one 11 years ago. 14pt. Hunted same stand for 15 straight days and took him at 6:00 pm on Oct. 15th. Got lucky!
Bourbonator that's a beautiful buck! Love the G2 with all the character pts. Was he measured non typical?
Slipperypaw - 6, That's great!
Congrats to all!
Nope, I was after a big 10 pt. I had been hunting for 3 years. Never did find out what happened to him. It seems like a lifetime ago when I took this buck.
Bill, I shot an 8pt that grossed 129 and net 124 6/8 last year... he had 1" broke off his g-3 that kept him out. Lol... didn't matter to me. Had him aged at 4.5 yrs old. The numbers didn't bum me out. He was a great deer!
I have a few net p&y deer and a few others that gross but just fall short of net.
I have two that would be close but I never got them scored and most likely never will.I shoot the first decent buck I see and it's cost me several huge bucks.Four times in the last 7 years I've had huge bucks offer me slam dunk shots after I already killed one.Four years ago,I passed an iffy shot on a massive 11 point the first week of the season that I had about a dozen trail cam pictures of.I saw him one more time and then he disappeared.I killed a so so 8 point the last week of October and was hunting a dmap area about 2 miles away for a doe a week later. That same buck strolled by me at 12 yards and rubbed a tree right in front of me.Two days later a guy I know killed him in that same spot.I'm not a true trophy hunter but that one still bothers me.
Dennis, I have an 8 around that size as well. My 14 scored non-typical gross 170", net 164". I don't play the numbers game anymore, it's more about the hunt, and I'll take the 1st, nice buck that comes my way.
This one's my favorite trophy. He was the first buck I ever took with traditional equipment. Like I said, it's not all about score.
1 in the book. 3 others from PA that would likely qualify but I've lost interest in entering them. A few other animals from other states/provinces that would definitely make it but haven't had them officially scored either.
bourbonator- That's a great picture... Love the bow.
I've taken a few that will net the minimum for P&Y over the years but I have never entered any of them into P&Y. Maybe I'm just cheap or maybe it just does not matter to me anymore. At one time when i was younger I set goals to shoot bucks to enter In to record books. I have entered one awhile ago into the Ohio big Bucks Club or whatever they call it. I just want to make as much meat as I possiably can by shooting Doe and I save my buck tags for a mature buck. (Mature buck in my area and eyes) makes me happy.
Mike
I believe 2 the first one here no question. Although not "officially" scored I will as soon as I get the mount back.
Now the 2nd one here I have questions about how to score him correctly (Mr Razza) If you look at the left antler it appears we have a long drop tine (abnormal point) but this is actually the end of the main beam. What looks like the end of the main beam is actually the match to the right side g-3 with the sticker point. This buck had a badly injured right rear leg and had a knot the size of a cantelope for a knee joint. The whole bottom half of the leg was turned around backwards. This injury caused the deformity in the left antler.
My question is how would you score it???
Ron, 2 nice bucks you have there. I have measured and seen a lot of bucks were the beam bends down giving the appearance of a drop tine. Hard to tell from this picture but if this is indeed the case here I would say the g-2 would then have a kicker off the back and no g-3 or a common base. Need to have a measure look at it to determine the call. Good luck and congrats on 2 nice deer.
Thanks, either way it's still a great deer and the score doesn't take that away. I'll take him to be scored and let you know what the decision was.
4406v, yup I'm with Dennis, would need it in hand to figure it out. Hard to tell from just a pix.
There a few different questions would have to be answered.
What is the main beam as you already seem to know and is that point a normal point or not as it sits.
Where are you located?

Here's a buck I took in 2005, it grossed P Y but netted just under 125.
Not trying to hi-jack the thread but thought you guys would like to see pictures of the odd left antler configuration.
another view from the front
That's an awesome buck but I don't believe it's even all that close to 125 inches. It's still a great trophy though and I guarantee it looks great on the wall.
I have one. 132 2/8 gross and 126 6/8 net. Not officially entered though.
Nice buck with the drop tine. I'm not convinced that's the main beam though. I would score it as a non-typical with a drop.
4406v- if it's not to much trouble snap a pic of the inside of the beam were all the points meet.
There have only been 2 P&Y class bucks seen/noted by me and the area hunters around me in 20 years. One was arrow hit and found by a gun hunter, the other was hit on the highway during the rut.
Pretty slim pickens.
Left antler picture. I have more if it will help.
I think the beam is the little nipple between the two! Lol. I would need to have this one in hand to make a call. Pics can really throw you.
I have a few from PA that are P&Y deer.
I have a few from PA that are P&Y deer.
Two on this wall from PA and Are P&Y
Stick, Lol... definitely!
LOL! I was thinking he is probably single handedly keeping his taxidemist in business! ;-)
I don't believe I've ever seen a P&Y buck in PA while I've been hunting, let alone killed one. At least not that I remember. But I'm old, and being that memory's the second thing to go, I may be forgetting about one.
I seem to remember one or two while spotlighting that may have exceeded 125 net, but they weren't all that great.
Fred Bear once said that 90% of bowhunters have never seen a 140" buck. Of course that was well before genetically created super deer, food plots, mineral supplements and urban sprawl. PA has some great bucks though if you're willing to search and wait them out.
IM better at missing p&y class bucks than I am at putting my tag on one. Hit a sapling in 2000 and missed 2 this past year. The quest continues for me.
Thanks for the compliments on some of my deer. I have to tell you that it took me a while to get a P&Y and I have been pretty fortunate in hunting. I'm an all day sitter which has dramatically increased my percentage on big deer and truthfully I think about 1/3 to 1/2 of those deer have been shot in the 10-2:30 time frame. And as far as taxidermy bills go they are all paid to me now since I self taught myself and about 10 of those I did myself since learning. Saves me some serious bread!
I've taken 17 P&Y Buck. Unfortunately the mounts and pictures were destroyed in a fire 9 years ago.
I arrowed one that I think is P&Y (never had it scored) and its my 2006 buck and the pic is in my Trophy photos on this site. I am sure I was generous to myself when I put a tape on it but had it I think in the high 120's or low 130's when I measured it according to P&Y.
Of course, I have several P&Y's on film, within easy bow range (one was well north of 150"), after I had already filled my buck tag. I took screen shots of the video and posted it on other sites back in '05 and '06 but they are lost in the archives. All were 2B bucks.
4 years hunting and shot this p&y in my 3.5 acre back yard last year on oct 11th. Dropped within 100 yds of my house. Have 3 more up and comers on camera this year. Here's to hopin!!
5C buck. Probably about 4 or 5 years ago now.
I've shot 2 in PA that grossed in the 140's, but I don't have any pics of them on this computer to share. One was killed in 2006 and the other in 2009.
I couldn't tell you what the net score was for either.
I have killed a total of 19 P&Y bucks here in Pa. I have not posted on here in a long time, mainly 'cause of the childish antics of a very few regular posters. With that said I will attempt to post a picture of the latest P&Y buck I killed on the 10th of this month.
Congrats Big Daddy --- nice deer

Just curious Big Daddy, what did that deer score?
Nice buck, congrats.
129 5/8 I killed him from the same stand I killed his father a 156 3/8 from 2 years ago. This his father.
this years buck was my 28th in a row with a bow from Pa. with 8 pts or more. I've also killed 2 P&Y black bears here too since the archery season for them opened.
All right Big Daddy, oh....that just sounded wrong!; ) Nice bucks BD
Mike
I can not say with 100% certainty that buck was the others father but I'm 95% sure. I know the deer on my land like I know my yellow labs. The bigger 8 pt. was 5 years old and he was the boss buck at the time doing most of breeding of the 2 family groups of does living on my farm. I "hunt" bucks 365 days a year and let me tell you it takes a lot of work. Getting up and forcing myself out the door when it is 5 degrees and windy in February or swatting skeeters when it's 99 degrees and 90% humidity in August.
here is the largest of the two Pa. archery bears #485
Congrats Droptine now that's one heck of a nice deer!
Mike
Thanks Mike. I was shaking a good bit with that one!
Allegheny county buck 131"
Don't know if he's going to make it and it really doesn't matter he makes my book.
Saturday 8 am out of the same tree I shot the drop tine buck out of in 2005
The genetics for the double throat patch runs in my area. This is the 3rd one I've killed there.
The buck on the left was killed the last day of archery season in 2004 at 8 am from the same tree!!! Talk about Deja vu???
Some great deer here... Congrats to all. For me I'll be chasing in late archery. It was a great season so far but haven't connected on the buck I'm after. Good luck to all!
Just one, from 2007. He grosses just under 150", but only nets 131" due to deductions. He is big. I am not long-arming. Only a 15" inside spread. He is all mass and tine length. Left G-2 is over 12".
Allegheny County
Why r u shooting those dinks, HM....he needed another year or two! :-)
I have a couple in this picture that PA P&Y bucks
Here is the other half of my Bow Buck wall
Nice deer guys! I didn't add any to the wall yet this season... Still trying tho!
Good luck!
One for me. Beaver County in 99. 21 inch inside spread. 10 inch G2s. Lots of mass. I really don't know what it scores but I'm sure it would make P&Y. I'm with Bushmaster... er uh, Bourbonator, seems like a lifetime ago.
Not sure about this Allegheny county buck. Probably 129. ;-)
