In light of Pete's outstanding thread "How will you keep focused" I thought it might be time to get acquianted once again!

Tell us a little about yourself - how long ya been hunting with a bow - and anything else that may interest us here about yourself!

Personally I have one adult daughter and a 15 year old son! They both hunt! My wife and I are Hunter Safety Instructors as well as licensed falconers!

I'm Denny Hughes and live in Pierce County. I did 33 years in Law Enforcement. Two with the FBI, thirty with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (Crime Lab)and a year with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Department. I've been married since October 1971 and have two grown boys and nine grandchildren. I've hunted with a bow for a looong time (since '78 or so) and have been fortunate to tag animals in Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Minnesota, and other assorted places. I am a regular member of Pope and Young (proudly so). I'm pretty much a live and let live sort of guy and do not think I need any help figuring out political stuff or things of religion, that's why I rarely discuss such stuff. I am an opponent of the new crossthing laws...I may have to tolerate this stuff but I do not have to like it. I have gotten the truck packed for a trip to Ontario for bears and as soon as I get back will head for northern Wi. for bears as well. 2015 will see me heading for Alberta for moose again. I am looking for a mentor to assist in my building a recurve this winter...anyone game for that? I've had both shoulders surgically repaired and look at the arrows in the quiver----you'll understand my handle.

I don't use my real name or post pictures of myself as I represent a number of different companies in the sporting market and do not want any of my comments to be taken as opinions of the companies I represent, they are mine and mine alone.

I'm 43 with two great kids and love to hunt and fish. As with most of us on here bowhunting is my first love, I think it's more being out that time of year more than doing it with the bow. I think I get darn near as much enjoyment out of squirell hunting that time of the year. If you've never hunted squirells with a suppressed .22 pistol you don't know what you're missing!

I come off as being rather rude or crass on the internet but in person I'm a completely different guy.

I've been asked by BT if I take anything serious. I take the Lord as my savior very serious, my second marriage very serious and the well being of my three kids very serious. Other than that... we live in a very messed up world right now and I try to have fun in everything I do.

Not much sand left in the top of my hourglass and look forward to the day he calls me. I dont like the youth hunt(sorry BT) Dont like the crossbow being in the archery season (sorry Zinger and the company you work for) Dont like baiting (sorry you that bait)Dont like horn porn (sorry Dority)

Someone may have a few pics of me around their bear bait. We did stumble across a baiting area with a pit blind of all things. The hollow logs were opened and there was coco krispies everywhere. Sorry if I messed it up for you! Well... not really its baiting!!!!!! HA

Well I suppose. I live in Seeley, WI. and retired two years ago from the US Forest Service 33 years as a firefighter. But there were other duties along the way too. I am a certified measurer for Pope and Young, Boone and Crockett and WI. Buck and Bear. Past District Director for WBH.

I ride road and mountain bikes and cross country ski for fun and health. Also, I do outdoor photography and have a website for my photos. I enjoy it and also hope it brings in a little cash so I can bowhunt more.

I have been on this site almost since it started and have learned that before hitting send to step back and think. I don't post much anymore but read and listen to what others say. Sometimes just a look in the mirror helps. I realize that I can be wrong and believe it good to admit it when needed. I prefer posts about hunting rather than posts about politics.

10 or better - I have done alot of bivy hunts in N Wis thru the years...... I can not figure out, why so many, will plan them for out west, but do not do them, here.........

I have some great spots if you want to know where to go........

One thing about these spots, there are not alot of deer, but again, there are not many hunters, so that equals out to very little pressure on the deer... And that equals out to a good chance to get one....

The sign does not lie, so the bucks are there....

Either way, in your own tent, by yourself, deep in the woods that we have left, you can not beat it, it is just special.........

I can also send you my pack list

From: 10orbetter
24-Aug-14
Razor, thank you for the offer, I have charted many spots in the Nicolet from years of grouse and gun deer hunting. Like I said, just have not gotten off my duff. I hunted everywhere from Laona to St. Johns Lake to Wabeno, Augustine Springs...In the past, I have kept detailed Topo maps of good deer sightings. Since seeing Pasq. post, I started planning for the 16th through the 20th of Oct. It's not about the deer, it is totally the experience. I will tell you, a guy could do a great hunt in the U.P. National forests. The other hunt I want to do is a float trip someday. The pack list would be great. I'm pretty solitary when it comes to hunting deer. I guess that is why I would rather bow hunt then do anything else on earth.

Don't get me wrong, I value, appreciate how blessed I am, and mostly enjoy the current hunting opportunity I have. It really is not the same as hunting big woods.

From: razorhead

Okay. I do hunt the UP,,,,,, I also hunt via water, and have done canoe hunts. I have a spot on the Brule I hunt this year, via the canoe.....

I have a 15 foot, square stern, very wide and stable in the middle, you can stand in it, and its light,,, If you ever need it, its up north, you can use it if you need to....

I know what you mean about the big woods, I just love it..... I shot a 150 in Germantown, and it was a great buck, but its not the same, as a buck, in the big woods.....

Its all good, but I do like the big woods......

From: 10orbetter

Razor, I'm in Ozaukee County. One of the areas I started thinking about was Whisky Lake, enter off of 2150. Looks real good on paper and large enough to not have allot of other traffic. I also like the Wabeno and Nixon Lake areas. On the Brule, do you use an electric motor on the scanoe? In my mind, anywhere there is a stream or river will be golden. Thanks for the offer.

10 or better - 2150 runs from Hwy 70 and dead ends at the Brule River. there are 4 landowners at the end all nice people.

East of 2150 is designated Wilderness. As you come up 2150 from 70, the first turn off to the left is Perch Lake. Not wilderness, but no one camping in there in fall. 4 spots from that access, 15 to 20 min walk. Nice place for base camp, good water source, or easy to bring in from where you park.

The next turn off is to the left, 2 miles up. Go east and you will access the lower drainage area of Riley Lake. You will access Lower Riley, Cruiser Lake and Camp 13 lake. This is low swamp area ridges to camp on, on the high side. This would be a true bivy area. Here you will concentrate on the pinch points.

Wakefield Creek is there, and feeds out of the system.

Another 2 miles you will see another turn off on the left. Pass this and you will come to the intersection with 2443. This is the main artery going east into Whisker Lake and Riley Lake. Lots of fishing traffic in summer, at least what I think is lots, any more than 10 people....

Check your map, you want to look at the Bell Lake area, a you know what hole, but some impressive rubs this spring in there.

The USFS every year, has a fall flight aerial, of the active beaver ponds. I get that map every year, if you want one, I will send you one. Lots of new active ponds on the lower area of Riley lake....

Also check out 2443 going west. You need to look for 2442, a real you know what road. west of there is Le Roy creek, an area I am high on, but you will not be alone, good wolf family in there......

Hope this helps

From: Pasquinell
24-Aug-14
Razor I sent you a couple of messages. Did you get them?

From: 10orbetter
24-Aug-14
Wow Razor more than helps. Right now I am planning either Oct. 10-13 or 16-20. Just do not want to give up the rut down here by going later. More the experience then anything. I know the areas your are taking, I have topographical maps of the entire area. It has been something I've wanted to do for a long time. Not getting any younger. I am a map nut. I like the area around Riley Creek about a mile in from the intersection off 2150 north of 70. Looks like a good area with a couple of pinch points. Have not hunted it but, on paper looks good. I will probably make a day run up to scout before doing an actual hunt. I am fortunate to have my own business and able to set my schedule.

It is very cool that you are willing to be so helpful. I hope I can someday return the favor.

Razor, I know there can be good deer up there. I took this one back in the late eighties, the year we had 24" of snow Thanksgiving weekend. Picked up his track in a cutover by Wabeno in the fresh snow and followed him all afternoon. Came over a hill and there he was. I was so far in, I dragged him up on a dead-fall and hiked back out to where the guys were. Before cell phones, and all the guys were ready to organize a search party. When I told them they didn't believe me until the next day when I dragged him out. They thought I was lost. I shot him around 3:45 and didn't get to the trucks until nearly 7:00 PM. It was mostly on the count of the deep snow and I could not see where I was going. In my 20's then! LOL

I am in my 40's, and live in St. Croix County, but own hunting land in Polk county.

Been gun and bow hunting since 1981. I used to bear, duck and bird hunt; but over the last 15 years, I have changed to focus only on whitetails.

UNfortunaly single, and no kids, but love being a uncle to my brother's & sister's kids, and look forward to teaching them hunting as they get older.

I'm a very large man, so finding hunting equipment, boots, gloves and stands that fit me, is always a challenge. That coupled with a major back & neck injury years ago, makes it hard to sit for more than 4 hours, but during the rut, I really try to tough it out all day.

My gun hunting group is made up of basically 4 families, and adds up to 16 or more guys every opening weekend. Since the passing of my dad, being at the hunting cabin with "the boys", is the most important thing in my life.

Hello, my name is Curtis and I am a deer-aholic.

I am married going on 2 yrs, have a 7yr old son that came with me from a previous relationship. My wife deserves way better than me and I am not sure how I landed her. Must be my personality! Live just outside Green Bay. Hunt on a family farm in Winnebago co. 156ac that has been in the family for 5 generations. I have the back 80 and my brother got the half with the farmstead and has lived out on it since he was 17. I think I should of gotten an extra 20 or 40ac since he got the house but no worries, he doesn't hunt and is a car guy so I have access to the entire property to hunt. I only recently started to take hunting seriously and not treat it as sit in woods for a couple hours then go to bar. The last 4 years I have passed all yearlings and started doing food plots. I have harvested a couple nice bucks the last 2 seasons and am hoping to make that a regular thing. I am always trying to learn to make myself a better hunter and land manager. There is much work to be done at my property but I love tractor time! OK work is calling so I will stop the babble!

Hey everyone,

My name is Cord. I'm 21 year old college student. I go home on the weekends and do my hunting then. This is my first year bow hunting and second year hunting in general. My dad was not a hunter, although he loved the outdoors. I hunt on a 30 acre parcel of land that my mom and dad bought when I was a little kid, and on about 80 acres of my family friend's property that backs up to a public wildlife preserve. So far, I am hooked. Had my first hunting encounter with a deer last weekend and can't wait to get out this evening.

I'm on my wifes laptop so I am ahunter55. I live right near the Mississippi river on the Ia/Il border. I've been bowhunting longer than many of you have been alive. I started organized Archery in 1956, Bowhunted Ill. 1st ever Deer Season in 1957 missing 4 deer & killing my 1st deer in 1958. I've been blessed with many Bowhunting adventures (99% DIY, Public land) in 14 states & 2 Canadian provinces. I managed 38 Biggame animals (Whitetail, Elk, Bear)with recurves b/4 switching to Compounds in the mid 70s. I am fortunate to have a Bowhunting adult son & Daughter + 2 G-sons now into bowhunting to make my Bowhunting even more enjoyable. My family & Christian faith comes 1st & then archery/bowhunting. I've been involved in all phases of archery/bowhunting in the 58 year career (so far) from shop/lanes retail owner, competition shooter, State archery assn. officer + more & lucky enough to pen some articles published in some State & National Bowhunting magazines. Anyway, have a great wife when it comes to my passion of archery. 3 years ago after a 30 year layoff from competion (always bowhunted though)I started back 3-D & Field shooting. I have my G-sons wanting to shoot 3-D to thank for this "revitalized". I have been blessed to have done in archery/bowhunting what many will only dream of.. 2014 tourney wise has been a good year. 2nd state target & 3rd State Field championships PLUS I shot my 1st ever National outdoor NFAA Field 5 day championship in Yankton, S.D. this year (Bucket list) & squeeked in a 2nd place in the Master Senior Bowhuning Div..

Hey everybody. My name is Jason, 41, live in Washington County. I am HS teacher (math) and a conservative...imagine that. Married and two teenagers at home. Bow hunt as much as I can, but not as much as I'd like too. Wife is a kindergarten teacher and everything that is right about my kids is from her. Like the song says..."I'm hard to love." As pic shows, I also coach baseball. Presently, I coach a high school team in the spring and travel team summer/fall. Coached college baseball for awhile, but gave it up to spend more time with my family. Happy hunts, safe hunts, and God Bless!!

YoungCd12,

Welcome to the wonderful world of deer hunting! Hope you have many safe and successful hunting seasons ahead of you! And success doesn't always mean you have to get a deer. Just having a great time, and getting better each time out should be considered a success!

My name is Shane H. I am 31 yrs old. Married ten yrs. 2 boys, one a freshman and one in 6th grade. Both hunters, my wife is not but she gets excited for us. I started hunting at 12 and then lost my dad/hunting partner. Didn't hunt again until about 6 yrs ago. I live in Racine and own a painting company. I do most of my hunting on farms near Fairchild. I do not gun hunt but I go up for gun season so my boys can hunt, and to make sure I can keep an eye on the land. 3 yrs ago a tresspasser shot a 172 out of my best spot, I had watched that deer grow up and was very heartbroken to get the phone call. So now I make sure I am up there. We have a couple booners running around up there, hoping one of the boys will get one this yr.

Nice stuff, and great photo Glass. Question for you. My son has shown an interest in metal detectors, but I don't want to waste money on "junk" either. Any tips via PM sometime would be appreciated. Have no idea on what to look for and what to avoid. By the way, I'm Kevin, live just south of the Kewaunee/Door County line and a Paul Bunyan cast from Lake Michigan near Algoma, married almost 16 years with three kids ages 9 to 15. Enjoy the last of the 40s Glass! (I've noticed a few more aches in the 50s). Been bow hunting for nearly 40 years but it's been quality vs. quantity tree stand and ground time since married with children. Easier to sneak away to fish in summer as it's already light by 4:30 a.m. and can be home cooking breakfast by the time everyone is up. Though I still get thrilled with every strike, sighting or shot, am just as likely to take a beginner hunting, fishing or for a wildlife drive with camera and binoculars and relive those magical outdoor experiences through their eyes.

Hi, I am Joe and I live in Racine with my beautiful wife of 30 years and our dogs. I shot my first deer at age 12 and have loved the sport ever since. Just this year I finally sold my loaded Mathews and job shoot a long bow. I have the pleasure of working with adults with disabilities and have done so for 25 years. My other passion is Walleye fishing in Canada a couple of times a year.
