I hit one at about 100 yards last week (rifle) and it ran right toward me but I lost sight of it among the rows in a vineyard - I was sure that I hit it but it just ran as if nothing happened.

It was getting dark so instead of following the blood trail my friend and I bounced around looking for the deer. We spent an hour looking hundreds of yards in every direction.

After searching in the dark we went back to basics and started with the blood trail. 15 minutes later we tracked the deer to the exact lane she chose to run before piling up only at about 100 feet away from where I shot from. She had run about 200 feet toward me and I was looking 200 yards in other directions.

Rich,

Are you allowed to use bow for crop protection?

So the tracking lesson learned is to follow the blood instead of looking for the dead deer?

I guess if someone needed that lesson, it's a good thing they learned it.

Yes, bow are allowed. Season run Jan to end of Oct. ML's are not allowed for some reason??????????????

Thanks DC@W I really did not know - been away just catching up.

My lesson learned was that sometimes the slow methodical method is more effective than the fast immediate satisfaction technique

I always look for the body in concentric circles of the impact zone.

My friend likes to follow the blood trail.

I usually find the deer first but in this case his favored technique prevailed.

I depends on the circumstances I guess.
