Suspiciously placed ladder stand
Connecticut

I picked up 60 acres to hunt so I took a quick walk around. The day I got it I drove in real quick to get an idea of the contours of the land and happened to see several nice whites.
I began to walk it and found trees literally vomiting acorns and fresh sign everywhere. Here's the interesting twist, the neighboring piece is very clearly posted. Signs every 20 yrds with landowners name on them and the town. I look up and see this ladder stand about 5-10 yrds from the neighboring piece on mine directly facing the posted piece. This stand was hung not too long ago because whoever hung it took a chainsaw to the tree and cut off a dead kicker that was in the way. The cut wasn't more than a month old.
Now from my research the neighbor owns a lot of land that borders my new piece. He has 31 that abuts mine plus another 20 next to that and an additional 75 across from his home. This leads me to believe that the stand is not his as he has so much room to hunt on other tracts.
What suggestions do you guys have into finding out who owns the stand.
I was told no one else was hinting this piece with me besides the guys I got access. The stand placement is very fishy.
Put a note on the stand asking for identification and phone number. Go from there.
If you confirmed with the land owner that its not theirs, ask LO if you can take it down.
I would take it down and leave it on the ground with a not telling them to contact you.
If it's in a good spot I would leave it there and hunt from it. If the guy shows up you tell him the stand is on property you have permission to hunt, do you? But you have better be 100% sure that you are on the right property or the tables could turn on you. Good Luck
a friend of mine had someone set up a ladder stand on his property without permission.....
he just cut the tree down the ladder was in...ha lol
Be careful, I took one down a few Years back. Same situation.. I was told I'm the only one allowed.
Well a week later I get a call saying that his Brother let a guy on and he forgot.
The other hunter was pretty pissed and I don't blame him.
So just leave a note in a plastic bag.
About 15 years ago I got a great place to hunt in westchester. I had landowner permission and the trails and deer signs were amazing. 3 days before opening day landowner calls me to say someone took it down and left it on his fence with a note saying I was within either 100 feet or 100 yards from a preserve. I wasn't aware there was a preserve behind his property nor the 100 yard/feet law.
There is no such law in NY. You should have told them to show you the law in writing or put the note in a pipe and smoke it!
There is some kind of law in long Island about size of property for bow I think .STEVE
steve, im not sure of all of l.i,.i did o job in south hampton snotty ville..from what i got out of talking with the other guys on the job was 500ft from any structure or road same as shotgun..and try to get permission..lol
I could get permission but he doesn't have 500 feet but he dose have lots of deer .
They changed the law in NY this year to 150ft bow, 250ft crossbow and gun remains at 500ft. So unless you can find some specific ordinance for the town you are hunting in I would go for it.
Generally the DEP frowns on towns making up their own hunting laws. Unless they have a total ban on hunting they are expected to follow the state regs.
Funny I just walked up to a stand today that doesn't belong on the property that I am hunting. I think It has been there for a few years. I guess I will put a note on it.
