Thought I would get this going, post some pics and stories. Hope you all have a safe and productive season!!
5c. Fedora bow, zwickey head on a cedar shaft. Exit opposite front armpit. Quarter away at 35yds. Acorns bouncing of my stand. Awesome piece of land in Robeson Twp.
Took this doe on Letterkenny Army Depot on the PA opener. The area I'm hunting requires a doe to be shot first.
For the past two seasons I used my recurve and missed a doe in the same tree, on the first sit, which resulted in me chasing the "doe carrot" all season while BIG bucks casually walked past my stand laughing (and I think flipping me the bird too).
Well this year I took the easy route and finished my doe with a compound bow! I'll be using my recurve the rest of the season........ ;) Biggens beware!
Congrats guys! :)
Thunder- Oh boy.........................I can hear 'ol RC now! ;-)
Shot this 8 pt yesterday evening at 6:45 pm. Now I get to sit back and count the days down till I head to Ohio for my 2 week vacation!:)
Took the pic last night with my phone when I found him. I'll get the wife to take some good ones when I get home from work today.
10 yard shot with the slick trick mag and he only made it 40 yards after the hit.
Nice deer Ben. Can't wait to see a better picture of those browtines.
Congratulations everyone! Looks like some fine eating!
Ben...do you need someone to watch over your PA property while you're in Ohio? I'll be glad to do it! LOL! That is an awesome buck!
Nice Ben. I'm likin' them brows!
Congrats to all and that is one wild lookin buck! Awesome
Here is another pic.
Thanks for the congrats everyone! We'll, not RC:)
NICE buck, Ben! And very distinctive rack-Congrats!
Congrats Ben! He has a huge neck too, looks like a brute.
Congrats Ben! He has a huge neck too, looks like a brute.
Managed to tag a doe in Ohio Thursday night. Not sure why the picture is sideways, sure was a beautiful sight rowing the old John boat down the creek with a deer in there.
Congrats Ben!
Mike
Congrats Mike! Sure is a pretty sight.
If you took the pic with your phone, hold it sideways next time with the button to the right. If you hold the phone up and down, it will post sideways for some reason.
Ben
Ben, can we use that picture? Nice.
Sure Art. I have no problem with that.
Mike, that's a cool pic in the boat.
Congrats to all.
Congratulations Ben! That's a cool looking deer!
Congrats fellas. Nice buck Ben. Nice sideways pic, Rat :^)

Ben, can we use that picture? Nice.
Art, I hope you're not gonna use that for PA Bowhunting???!!! (That's an OHIO doe! ;-)
Rut, this is the Ohio doe, Ben's buck is from PA.
Mike
Congrats Mike and Ben. Great looking deer for sure. Been a slow start for me so far. Looking forward to a Monday evening hunt with the Rut Nut.
Very cool buck Ben. Congratulations!
I was gonna go out this afternoon but it's raining now and I got the smoker goin' so... I'm just gonna hang out for a bit and add some of the last of the applewood prunin's my late father-in-law gave me a decade or so ago from those trees he grew and tended up in Greenville... miss ya, Ed. I'll take one of those roasts north for his widow to enjoy, and I'm sure she'll share it with his friends who miss him as much as we do.
In the smoker is a venison shoulder roast and two big neck roasts... garlic cloves deeply inserted therabouts, a homebrewed dry rub, numerous fresh herbs and such, and bacon tied to the outside to keep it moist... and heck... who don't like bacon? Smelled so good, I almost ate it raw :^)
Ain't nothing better than that smokin' smell... got it full in my nostrels and on my clothes already now and I'm just gettin' started.
Also got a big bowl of jerky waitin' for the overnight marinade... smoker will be runnin' tomorrow too :^)
Yeah... all you 'killers' and 'head hunters' who won't eat deer meat... I thank you... and keep it comin'... :^)
p.s. boy did I cut my finger good today... pinky finger... real bleeder... I like scary sharp... got myself good with a broadhead the other day too... what the heck? gettin clumsy in my old age? a sign?
We put pics of ubp members in the mag no matter where they take the game.
Had Monday off work and got out early. This doe came in around 7:30. 15 yard lung shot, easy recovery.
Loaded up and left the smoker for about 4 hours and put some miles on... then did a lil' visit'n with old friends from 'the hood'... limpin' now more than I'd care to admit to most folks I know. Din't see anything worth writin' here 'bout. Sorry Rog... no apples... notta one :^(
no oysters or "2nd cut" sheepshead either :^(
12 minutes... gonna shut the smoker off... thinkin' I may just stumble onto a trace of silver linging...
... smells like a smokehouse here in the neighborhood :^)
I expect company soon :^)
Just checked this all out......congrats, everyone on all the great deer. :) If the boy gets a deer before my vacation then I'll even get a chance to arrow one.
Jeff, sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you. ;^)
Things changed a lot since I was there last, mmmm maybe a year and a half ago. No apples, apple trees dead and/or dying, ash tree(stand tree) is dead... go figure... I don't know... it don't look good. My #1 apple stand ain't got nuthin. I ran out and checked a few other spots in/around Moraine I thought maybe would be convenient for you and junior, but things were just messed up... overgrown roads which kept others away were cleared... like backhoe or grader cleare.... too deep in... farther than I've ever seen... don't know what they'r doin... maybe setting up for loggin or gas wells?... no apples or mast in the good reliable spots... I got sweaty, black swamp/stinky... know what I mean...? Sorry dude... I tried.
I think we should work the akerns....
Don't get me wrong... I had fun today though... :^)
... and the smoked meat? omg... forGET about it.
so much I want to do right now... wish I could clone myself.
I need mushrooms......
I need space.......
Jeff and Roger I almost took one of the deer in your stomping grounds out about 2am Monday morning on 422 heading west right at those blinking yellow lights before I79 on ramp. Locked em up, still don't know how I missed him, nice little buck.
Mike
Dude... I know them woods like the back of my hand... was actually 'round-there today in my ventures and visitin's, and that's pretty handy to where Rog has been haulin in the cats.
The young-ens try to dodge traffic, but the OLD bucks know thers's a big 'pipe' that goes under the road RIGHT there within a selfbow's throw of that blinker/red light.... and they/we use it... :^)
The bridges too :^)
Kill it, Mike, there's a gang of 'em there. :) LOL....Glad to hear you didn't have an accident, seriously; anywhere along 422, 79 and 19 is CAUTIOUS driving, as you well know. It's a big area and avoiding hunters is the biggest obstacle in dialing down a spot - I detest a crowd.
Jeff, I know just where you were at - it's THICK! Love it for deer. The biggest 8pt I've ever killed came from Christley Road, what a whopper he was. I've been searching maps, scouting potential spots on the Slippery Rock Creek for FLATHEAD 'cats.......the mother of all barbelled feesh. As I understand they are in there and I'ma gettum next spring.
Hoping the boy gets his buck on a small co-op we've hunted for 3 years now. 3 stands set for wind and we came CLOSE last week. Killed himself a gang of deer now with rifle and even flintlock(2), one with the bow now too, but he has this buck/bow thing in his mind.....I can't blame him - I was once there too. :) When he finally does it I'll let out a sigh of relief and move on.
Got me some plans to pick up the 'ol boy you all know and head south for a couple days of mountain hunting with a great friend I ain't met yet. I'm a carpet bag hunter these days.
I was in a Dodge Caravan and that little buck would have left a Mark! One of our trucks hit two fawns at once in almost the same spot last year. Good luck hunting down in potter guys, either way you'll make some good memories you'll never forget, that's what it's all about in the long run.
Mike
Congrats to all you young studs who have done what I haven't been able to yet !! :):):) Ya'll got alot of meat on the ground. I been sittin' here waiting for the temps to drop below 95 degrees. Finally happened today. Tomorrow looks good, too. Then summer is back for us.
From: Treerat ........ ....... Date: 11-Oct-14
Rut, this is the Ohio doe, Ben's buck is from PA.
That's what I get for trying to "bust chops"! (guess I got egg all over my face! ;-)
Have killed 5 does so far. Going downtown tomorrow to get more doe tags for 2B. Haven't seen a buck worth shooting.
Herd it's good to see you posting again!
I've been taking a friend of my son's out for he last week or so. He goes to Temple University in Philadelphia but is able to make it to one of my spots in time for evening sits. He LOVES to bowhunt and made a great shot on this beautiful 8 point tonight. His smile says it all!
That's cool, Steke! Kudos to you for helping out a college student. Tell him CONGRATS on a fine buck!
Good to see you back, Herdmanager. And congrats on the deer! Still living up to your handle! ;-)
Congrats to your sons friend steke!! Nice buck.
Steke, remind Jr there that the best thing about being a hunter in college is you can schedule as many night classes as possible therefore getting lots of hunting time during day. Plus reading assignments can easily be done in a treestand.
Congrats on the buck!
Hey treerat, who tuned that bow? I see it found its mark that day. How's it shooting other then that?
You da man mike ; ) it's shoots great
Thanks Mike
My son Austin shot this buck yesterday morning (10-22-2014)at 7:15. Heart shot, deer only made it 30yds.
Nice Buck congrats on making a great shot.
Sweet! Tell Austin I said congrats Scott.
Tell Austin CONGRATS! :) That looks like a big bodied deer!
Congrats Banjo to you and Austin.
Nice shot and Buck Austin! Congrats well done!
Mike
Very cool! Tell Austin congrats, Banjo!!
Thanks everyone, It was a big deer. To say he was excited would be an understatement! He's still on cloud 9.
Banjo, congrats! Looks like the next generation is running past all of us. :)
Took this buck on Friday evening. 10 points, field dressed 219 lbs. Black widow with German Kinetics Silver Flame broadhead. Went down in about 70 yds.
Here's the image! from above post!
beautiful buck, Dave !! I thought things might start heating up around here, since the moon and sun were coming up together, but we're still in a heat wave. Glad to see you guys dragging in some big ones.
You don't see any leaves dropping around here :(:(:(:(
John
Nice buck Dave, congrats!!
Awesome buck Dave, congrats!
Thanks a lot Guys, I appreciate the kind words. In the stand at 4:10, shot the buck at 4:25, had him out of the woods before dark (with the help of my buddy Gary), sometimes things just work out. Still can't wipe the smile off my face!
Beautiful buck Dave! Did you kill him over near my house? My brother had a monster like that one chasing a doe around him Friday at 3:50 across from the house the one Brian saw was a 5x5 though. Looks like it's starting to heat up. My vacation starts 10/26
Congratulations Buddy you deserved that one.
Mike
Thanks Mike. This one came from SGL property down by Gary's. First time I had ever seen him. Came out from under hemlocks about 15 yds. from me. Had about 5 seconds to make the shot!
Dave
Nice buck Dave! Congrats!!!
It is starting for me in Tioga...Saw 4 bucks chasing a very tired doe last night..,no shot just watched the show.
It is starting for me in Tioga...Saw 4 bucks chasing a very tired doe last night..,no shot just watched the show.
wow. nice buck indeed. congrats
Dave, your a UBP Member aren't you? I know Gary is. If so hey Art there is a great picture for the newsletter. Public land Big buck with the black widow awesome!
Mike
Great buck!! Can't wait to get out there.
Dave's membership expired a while ago, sorry guys.
Great buck!! He'll be beautiful on yer wall man! know a great taxidermist fer ya....:)
Awesome Dave- CoNGRATS! Love that smile! :)
Yep Art, let my membership lapse. pure laziness on my part. I'll have to go to the UBP website and re-up. Thanks again for all the kind words Guys. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while!
Here's my Potter county 10/10/14. Main frame 8 with a couple of stickers, big body. I never pass on a legal buck and he isn't my largest but I just had his steaks on the grille and they are superb!
No buck yet, took this doe opening day, in the am.
I got this one last week, Sorry it's not the best picture.
Nice bucks mrw and BD!
Big Daddy, I have to ask though. How in the world can you say you never pass on a legal buck, but in the P&Y thread, you say you have killed 19 P&Y bucks in Pa??? You have to be the luckiest hunter on the planet to have the first legal buck to walk past you be a P&Y 19 times!!!!
Ben
Carl Runkle, my Dad, got this 7pt buck in York County last evening. Seems the buck around here are getting bigger!! Congratulations, dad!!
Wow! Some really nice deer! Congrats guys! :)
Hope to join the party this week or next! ;-)
Big Daddy- what broadhead you using?
mrw- WOW! You havin' one heck of a season...............in NJ AND PA!!!!! ;-)
I have my bow set up to shoot 3 blade 100gr Rage but prefer a 3 blade Muzzy or it's clone.
I'm more impressed with the 156" 8 point he shot two years ago that had a spread well inside the ears.
"If you guys want this place all to yourselves, your doing a good job of it...."
Apparently you do like it well enough to post here too, 'bud. :) Congrats there, "Mr. Regular".
Looks like quite a few folks posting on this thread and others, and there aren't many state forums on this site, if any, that get more traffic than PA. Btw, search all the other PA sites and let me know which one the other 299,988 bow hunters are on.......I wanna join. 12 is just not enough these days. :)
Yes Bill, it was pretty tasty! To bad I took that picture last week and it's all gone now:(
Here's a photo to get things at least somewhat back on topic until the deer photos start rolling in again. . It's not from PA, (Wyoming) and it's not a bow kill (didn't even bring my bow on the trip) but it was a great hunt in some beautiful country and sure did provide a lot of meat!
Wow that's an Awsome looking moose! Congrats
Mike
Shot this in Lehigh County 5C last night.
Congrats KS and SW!! Awesome moose!
KS great buck , congrats
Mike
Great animals, guys! Congrats. :)
Now we are posting!!! Photos that is of actual deer killed by arrows!
Nice buck kshollle1! Cool brow tines. Congratulations!
Just got back from helping my buddy with this big boy. He shot him in the pouring rain in 5d at 10:30 this morning. Dressed out just shy of 200 pounds.
That's a nice buck congrats
Wow, and from the "5 side" of the state!....Hey, I thought there weren't any deer there....? Congrats!
Got one yesterday morning.
Not my biggest, but meat in the freezer. 10 point. 5 yard shot. 16" inside spread. Northern 2B. 11/1/2014, 6:15 pm.
Nice buck Justgrad! Here's another pic of my buck. Still can't get the smile off my face! :)
You too, Bourb... How bout some details on yours? distance, area of WMU, etc.?
I still need to get me a recurve to try one of these years.
Justgrad, I took him in Washington County. It was an 18 yard shot, he was quartered away. I put the arrow right in front of his hindquarter and it exited behind his left shoulder. He ran about 50 yards. The arrow took out his liver and left lung. At one point I had him at 6 yards but he was looking right at me. I can't believe he didn't spook.
Congrats Justin and Bill!!
Great bucks guys congrats!! They are starting to drop now!!
I shot this 8 on 11/1 at 2:30 pm coming from a bedding area towards a creek crossing I was set up on at the head of a ravine.
Great buck Dylan! Congrats
Mike
Way to go Dylan!!! Great buck! Congrats !!
Awesome Dylan! Congratulations.
Good job, Dylan.....Congrats.
This guy was one of 5 bucks I rattled/grunted in, what an awesome hunt! Literally every time I rattled or grunted something came out to investigate. Nothing came in full bore looking to fight just more to investigate. This buck was the 5th of the afternoon and when I saw him I knew he was a shooter! He came from the north which was at my 12 and he headed straight to me. When he reached 20 yards he turned his body to head west, I drew and grunted to stop him. I let it fly and I drilled him. He ran probably 150 yards or so but was a very easy track job! Absolutely love the rut!!!
Like I said, easy tracking!
Another nice one Matt!! Congrats and great shot!
Good job fellas! Some nice bucks eh?:)
Congrats Matt!! He's a dandy!
Thanks guys! Good luck to you all!
matt, congrats. what's the spread on that beaut? got a frontal shot to post up?
Dang. Bobby K. On the bowsite
Congrats to all !
Bill v
Lot's of nice bucks. This is by far the slowest season I've ever had.I've had one dink within range and haven't seen squat most of the season. There was no shortage of deer a month ago but now they seem to have all but disappeared.Never seen anything like it.
16.5" spread, I rough scored him at 141 3/4" but I always seem to be about 5 inches high. lol He looks like a solid mid 130's buck anyways.
He really looks nice here! This is how I found him.
Really pretty buck Matt. Congrats!
I shot this one in PA Today. That is a very nice buck Matt
Thanks congrats on the tasty doe Mike! Get after a hoss now! ;)
It is sad, seeing all these awesome bucks killed.
Congrats on the doe Mike!
Congrats to all the successful hunters. Nice pictures guys. Personally , I've had very little time to hunt this year.
Shot this little brute his morning at 7:15. Seen him about 100yds away skirting the edge of the woods. Grunted a few times and he came in on a string. Shot him at 10yds, he made it 50yds and piled up. 72lb bow, 2315 arrows, Rage extreme broadhead.
Thanks everyone, been a tough season for me. Have about 150hrs sitting in a stand this year, been seeing very little deer, but it's all worth it. Got about 15 trail cam pics of this guy in velvet. Got one doe tag left gonna try to fill it with my recurve. Good luck to all!
I got this one this morning.
Pretty sure he was rifle hunting with big daddy, big daddy shot a spike later in the morning cause it's the first thing that walked by.
That's a fine buck Roy even if ya did shoot it with a rifle
Nice deer guys! I am trying to fill my doe tag and all I'm seeing are bucks.
Nope Bogey, shot him with a bow. Look at the hole my rage broadhead made.. :)
Perfect placement roy, opened that bad boy right up.
Nice buck RC, you get purrdy'r ever time I see ya! What's he score 697 9/8???
Mike
8 A.M. Heart Shot. back out after Mr. Big this evening.
Some really nice bucks showing up here- congrats guys! :)
Roy- LMBO! :)
11/7 10 point. My best buck yet
Nice bucks all, congrats!!!
Nice bucks all, congrats!!!
Really nice bucks Guys! Congratulations!
Nice bucks guys, congrats to all, some really great pics coming in.
Congrats to everyone...nice bucks. I'm back from my Iowa trip so I'll hit it hard this Fri and Sat to try and put a PA buck on the ground! Here's my Iowa deer, it's not as big as RC's buck, but I'm happy with it!
Congrats guys!! Some really nice bucks hitting the ground!!
Looks like I'm going to wear myself out saying "CONGRATS!" this year. :)
I have an idea.......Someone more handy than me(not a tough thing to be:))gather up all these pictures of HUGE BUCKS and save them in a file. Then next year, when someone inevitably starts whining "no big bucks in PA", on an antler restriction type thread(that we all know will happen)........we just slam them all at once with these pics!.....LOL......But, I am serious. Do it. :)
Btw, a bunch of co-workers, friends, relatives and other folks I'm know have killed huge deer this year, bucks and does alike. I've been inundated this archery season with trophy photos, just like the rest of the past decade or so.
Mike(Treerat), special shout out and congrats there, friend.......I know yours are always well earned. :)
Roger, I dropped my Ohio buck off at the butcher shop here in SW Pa yesterday. There were a pile of BIG bucks in there from PA!! Most I've ever seen in one shop in Pa!!
Ben
I know Bills country smokehouse had boxes and boxes of antlers and several heads/capes readied for the taxidermist when I dropped my deer off on 11/2.
Have heard of lots of bucks tipping the scales over 200# field dressed (actually weighed) too. Several of those were taken in the northern tier counties...
Some great deer, congrats to all!
Some nice bucks here! Congrat's everyone!!!
Bumped one walking in and got busted walking out in dark. Setup on a field edge near this scrape
Shot this 8 Pt, on the last day, minutes before the end of the season. He is one of the two that I hunted for all season, I passed on alot of little guys and it was all worth it at the end. 20 yard shot he went 10 yards and did the side ways shuffle, as I call it. I also shot a turkey an hour before the buck. Southern Clearfield County 2E. Now off to West Virginia to try my luck there.
Nice buck. Where in 2E? We have a cabin in Glen Hope.
Nice one DNO!! Congrats!!
Great buck DNO, and a turkey to, that's awesome!
Great buck DNO, way to take it to the wire!
Mike
Shot this buck Saturday at 8 am 9pt 17-1/2" inside spread
You sure do kill some nice bucks..... For a MOPAR guy:)
Very nice buck Ron! see you at Denton 2015!
Dave
Here is mine, 9pt taken last day in the morning. Well, actually hit him Friday, but backed out and finished the job Saturday.
We knew he was around as I had gotten a few trial cam pics of him.
I shot my buck on November 5th. My life has been work. I started a new job and i have been working 56 hours a week there. And still working 16-20 hours per week at my old job to keep my foot in the door until my probation period is over at my new job. So basicly, i haven't had much time for hunting. It was only my 2nd time out. This is my 2nd bow buck in 16 years of archery hunting. It is also my largest archery buck. It came in chasing a doe and i shot him in the shoulder. The slick trick broadhead did the job but next year i am going back to muzzy, just personal preference. One thing i will always remember about this buck is having to leave him in the woods over night when i was certain he was dead but i had to go to work. I found him the next morning 30 feet from where i had to quit the night before. Also i thought he had a smaller rack, i was just focused on making the shot once i seen he was legal.
Nov.8 Armstrong County 11:00 am. 18 1/2" inside spread.
Nice deer guys! Congrats.
My girlfriend got her first deer on November 8th. This was her first year hunting, and pretty darn special to get her first deer with a bow. She is still in disbelief, but it's safe to say, I think she's hooked for life!
Congrats on your first bow kill.
Got this one Oct 22nd at last light.
Managed to slip out from work early yesterday to get in a quick bow hunt during the gun season. and yes I had my orange on. Picture taken this morning at home.
stekewood motivated me to take the bow out this afternoon instead of the rifle...Maybe I'll put the guns up for good!
It's been a long time since I clicked on this thread. I guess I'm one of the guys who spends the majority of his time on the big game forums. But it certainly has nothing to do with the "antics of some regular posters" as some put it. It's simply because I hunt all over the country and have friends from everywhere. The BG forums is just the melting pot. But I always find my way back here and consider you guys family.
I love it! Guys like bigdaddy only diminish the accomplishments of others. I'm proud of you boys for sniffing out the truth. That was awesome.
I haven't killed a Pa deer yet but that's ok. I love late archery season. And when the season does come to an end I look forward to sniffing osage dust at Rcs place.
Congrats to everyone who hit their mark so far this year and best of luck to those still trying.
Way to get it done during rifle season with the bow boys! Congrats! That's an accomplishment right there!
Mike
Way to go, guys (and gal! ;-)
Love to see pics of the women and kids with their first deer!
RC...next year its true stick and string!
WHAT??????????
I thought you wuz gonna shoot rage heads?
LMFAO
I was thinking of using those bullet heads...BANG!!!
Md I see you shot a great buck in Iowa and let me say congrats. Now I'm going to open up a HUGE can of worms. How far was the buck when you shot him? You said "next year is true stick and string" I take that as you are going to shoot traditional. Would you have been able or felt confident making the shot with a stickbow? You might as well accept the fact that your effective range is going to decrease dramatically. If you are proficient out to 40 yards with your compound, plan on decreasing that to 15-20. Not saying it can't be done and I'm sure others on here are going to tell you I'm full of horsecrap, but if "hunting" is more important to you than "getting" then make the change. If you still like to shoot and harvest, stick with your compound.
12 yards Harv. I have killed deer out to 56, but most of my shots are 25 yards or under. That being said, I want to kill a deer with traditional equipment. I will still hunt with the compound mostly...sorry RC, but I gotta start somewhere! :)
I know how you feel Mike, I did the same thing, killed a couple with my recurve, and then I put it down, may do it again someday. Takes a lot of time and dedication to get confident but that's what we do. Good luck.
Congrats guys and gals, some great bow kills there for sure!
Josh, congrats to your girlfriend!
Congratulations to all the successful hunters here! Some really nice bucks have been posted hear....and some pretty tasty lookin' doe, too!
Katie wanted me to say "Thank you!" to all who congratulated her. Truth be told, she's a little upset at me for posting a photo of her without makeup on! Does anyone know if Scent-Lok makes eyeliner and lip gloss??
Tell Katie, 250 post and she is by FAR the best looking :)
Relax Bowjo, your heart can't take too much excitement. LOL
LMBO Josh! :) Tell her the only thing that could possibly make her look any better is just a bit of camo "face paint"! :)
Joe, I have to agree with you, my friend! Lol!
Perry, she took your advice....now she's ready for late archery! ;)
LMBO!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Tell her she looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
