How is hunting in NY?
New York

I live in Colorado, but it is looking more and more like I may be moving to upstate NY. Probably in the Glens Falls area. I have no idea what the hunting situation is like in NY and thought this would be a pretty good place to ask. What is your opinion of hunting in NY? Are there any big bucks and is it worth holding out for one or are they few and far between? How are the seasons? Is it worth hunting any nearby states?
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Andy
sorry to say I have no idea about the Glens Falls area. I know the western part of the state has plenty of deer and some nice bucks. I don't live there,(deep sigh)
Andy stay west NY sucs taxes are hi weather sucs Hey i will trade places with u !!
There's a lot more deer in the southern zone.Actually more everything except bears where their population is higher in the northern zone.
NYS is divided into a Northern zone (Glens Falls in here) and a Southern zone. Kind of draw a line across from Lake Ontario, East towards VT, the top is about the N zone, the entire bottom of it is the S zone. The N zone is mostly the Adirondack Mountains. The ADKS are characterized by a mature forest system that yields little food. The land is a mix of private and State lands, close to 50%/50%. Its easy to find a place to hunt on the State lands, however, with mature forests, the deer density is about 1 - 2/square mile.
Along the Western edge there is agriculture and higher densities. And bears are around throughout the ADKS, lower density than deer, obviously, but an option to hunt.
The S zone contains little in the way of public lands, maybe 95% private or more. But deer densities are MUCH higher with lots of managed forests as well as crop lands.
Good luck with your transition....

Thanks for the replies. I must admit your replies are not exactly filling me with excitement. If we end up moving maybe we will try to find a place in the southern zone.
Cityhunter-I was looking through properties online and noticed the taxes are BRUTAL in NY. Property taxes look like they are around 3-4x higher than CO. I'm sure that will change in CO at some point.
If possible, would it be better to live in PA?
Pat, that is an awesome buck. He's a monster in my book any day. I have also been a bit concerned about the taxes and "political situation". I'm relatively liberal and still I would say Colorado is getting too liberal for me. It's good to get some positive feedback on the hunting.
If you like Deer hunting- NY has a long season from Oct. 1st to mid December in most of the State. Most areas of the state have lots of public hunting land available, and yes you can shoot big bucks on state land. It also has Adirondacks (ADK) if you like big woods hunting. Upstate outdoors is the only good thing about NY.
location, location location. You can have great hunting in one area of a county, and poor in the next.
NY is liberal whack-job land, and we (they) pride ourselves in following in Califorina's foot step.
We conservatives are outnumbered drastically, so if you come here to live, I hope you are going to contribute to the fight.
NY is overall strongly ANTI gun (especially ARs and handguns, we have the strictest anti-gun laws in the nation… they don't work, of course.), PRO sodomy, PRO welfare, PRO illegals, PRO Obama.
I ONLY stay here to preach Christ and fight the enemy.
This might help you see how good the hunting is in New York. Enjoy! ??

I just moved to NY myself from Pa. Deer hunting is much better in Pa if you want quality bucks. If you want to see lots of deer and don't mind shooting yearling bucks NY is your state. From the Hunters I've talk to they shoot the first buck they see, now obviously this isn't true of all NY Hunters, but talk antler restrictions and they are ready to run you thru.
I would take the lower deer densities of Pa with the real chance of a 120" or larger buck over the higher deer density and it's brown it's down mentality of most NY Hunters. This is just my opinion from my observations
