Chasing Tonight

Got settled in for an evening hunt, real heavy antlered chocolate rack six point came cruising by around 3:30 pm. Nose to the ground, grunting like a pig. Couldn't get him to slow down or stop. Passed by at 15 yards. 5:30pm, the woods exploded. Another buck chasing three doe circled around in front of and beside me. Around 5:45pm the one doe circled back on my left side with the buck right behind her. Gave a little "maaa" to stop him, and proceeded to trim the white hair under his chest. Turns out the 25 yard shot was closer to 30. The doe took off, the buck did a 180 ran about 60 yards, circled back right after the does. Crazy night!!
I had a 4 point chasing a doe and fawn all over for about 40 minutes in the thicket. I could not see him most of that time, I just knew he was the big one by the grunting, then he came in and stood 10 yards after I bleeted at him when I realized he lost track of those does in the thicket. He was not what I had envisioned the whole time but when I saw the body comming towards me finally out of the thick stuff the heart was pounding.

I've never been one to target a specific buck, and I really dislike the term "hit list".....but Mr. Chocolate Horns just made mine. Lol. Not super wide, maybe ear width, just really heavy, decent tine length, and super dark horns.
Starting to see the rd kills picking up! My wife said there was a buck hit right in the middle of town a couple mornings ago on her way to work.

It sure is a fun time to be in the woods - watching the annual ritual unfold. Makes for some exciting, and oft times, very unpredictable occurrences.
A couple of years ago, I had a really nice buck scent trailing a doe that had come through about 5 minutes earlier. He was so worked up, he wasn't just grunting - he was literally roaring as he hustled along her trail.
His audible display had me so unnerved that when I reached in my jacket pocket for my bleat can, I pulled it out so fast that I lost my grip and the can flew about 10 yards through the air before landing a ways down the hill. All I could do was grin.
I've been seeing some decent chasing and bird dogging activity the last couple of days. Definitely picking up down here in the southeastern corner of the state.
Yep, they are moving more now. Saw 5 new blood stains and 2 bodies (small bucks) fresh dead on the T-pike this AM on my trip from Irwin to Rte. 8 to head to my stand.
But, the woods I normally hunt up there have been pretty much devoid of deer this year. Not even much sign at all, esp. buck sign. Only saw one small doe in the early AM grey light.
Time to start hitting some of my spots in the south and east portions of 2B.
Good luck fellas.
