Its better than stinking up the swamp with scented soap that deer are not use to smelling that's for sure. Does it work? Sure it does. It may allow you that extra few yards to pull off a shot because the deer is not smelling some strange scented soap like Dial or Irish Spring. Scentless deodorant is better as well. Anything past unscented soaps and unscented deodorant IMO is a waste of money though. Well I do use dirt scented wafers to store my hunting cloths with but those 3 cheap products are all I ever buy and deodorant and soap are needed regardless so scentless makes sense and doesn't cost you anything extra anyway during hunting season because like I said you need soap and deodorant regardless so may as well use scentless during hunting season.
If they don't work or it doesn't matter then why not put cologne on before going out and then just play the wind? :o)....
For hunting I buy 1 big bottle of scent-away liquid soap and it last me two years and it is a damn sight better than using Irish spring or something stinky like that and that's a fact!
The liquid one I use does not lather up very well on skin though so half of it was being wasted as it slides off the skin and it gets washed away before you have a chance to lather it up. A trick to save the liquid soap and get away with using very little of it is to wash your hair 1st and then re-lather your hair several times and use that lather on the top of your head to wash with.
:o)
Living out of a tent for ten days to two weeks at a crack without showers, but using unscented baby wipes and unscented deodorant, one stick for the pits and one for the bottom of my sweaty feet, I repeatedly end up with very little stink. A couple of days of driving after a couple of showers using regular soap and shampoos and I smell like a goat.
My friend's wife used to work for the company that manufactured the Hunter's Specialty soaps. She has told me that regular soaps and shampoos don't have the antibacterial agents that knock back the odor causing microbes. They just rinse some away and leave some perfuming agents.
My anecdotal experiences cause me to believe that she's correct.
I still hunt the wind carefully and don't believe that anything will make your scent stream disappear, but I feel sneakier when I'm not overwhelmed by my own "patina of stench".
I notice that when I use scentless soaps and scentless deodorant that unless I wash again within 18 hours with scented soap that I can smell my own stench much faster. If I wash with scented soaps I don't notice that for a couple of days.
I think the scent in scented soap holds back odors longer or mask them from the human nose for a much longer period of time. Just my opinion and 2C.
Let me head my post off at the pass here. I take a shower once every 4 days whether I need one or not. I change my tighty whiteys once month regardless if I need to or not. LOL
;o)
Orionsbrother, your friends wife must not have read the label. Scent Away has Triclosan listed on the label as the active ingredient. Triclosan is an antimicrobial and anti fungal agent.
I read a report on a lab test that showed HS Scent Away was the most effective of all the brands tested. The tests were independent from any of the companies.
Try doing full body scrubs with baby wipes, once in the morning and then again at night for a week or so. You might be surprised.
I was commenting about getting stinky in a short period of time after using those regular products after a hunt.
I use scent away soap and shampoo when staying at my buddy's cabin and have access to a shower, but don't pack them in when camping.
I don't think that you can ignore the wind with any product, but like I said, I feel sneakier when I can't smell myself.
Retro - I'm not kidding myself at all. I'm not into the marketing. I hunt the wind regardless. I don't stand in diesel exhaust prior to hunts or wear cologne though.
I prefer to not feel grungy. I like having an unslimed feeling. Yes, it may play to confidence or being more aggressive. But having said that, I do believe that less stink is better than more stink.
I don't store my hunting clothes in the dog kennel or carry fresh wolf scat around with me either.
You cannot fool a Deers nose no matter what you purchase. Hunt the wind or hunt very high.
I don't think anyone is saying that using unscented soaps is going to allow you to forget about the wind and other important aspects of hunting but it helps, even if just a little. I use unscented laundry detergent also, again it doesn't allow me to forget the wind but it doesn't hurt.
I think if you minimize your scent with scent free soaps the deer have less chance of smelling you. Many times the wind eddies so just hunting the wind is not always going to work. Many times I have had deer stop as if they detected something, check the wind for a bit only to later continue on. I check the wind with floaters on powders so I see what can be moving with the wind. If you walk in with stinky boots they will catch hat, the same if you have strong odors. I think the mild odor are as if you were there recently but so faint that they are not concerned.
Buy your scent killer products at Walmart in Dec. or January. At half price I buy enough for the next hunting season. BC
Anybody know if there is a shelf life on these products?
