Very slow for me also. I've hunted 4 mornings and 2 afternoons this week with not much to show for it. Walking in this morning at 5 was like daylight with that moon.

I think the 10-20th is going to be the best.

I was off from work 10/31/14 to 11/9/14 thinking I was going to hit it perfect. Right up to Holloween I had numerous bucks taring up scrapes. From one of my stands I could see 7 different scrape. I have 3 real mature bucks 2 I know are 4 years old. They were consistently visting these scrapes but just before shooting light or just after. I thought with 10 days to sit I would cross with one of them. I sat all day for 10 days. Everything went died...... The last buck i saw was Holloween night, and didnt even see a deer until thursday morning. They totally shut down. No scrapes were being hit, no chasing, the does even shut down. Pictures on my camera drop extremely off. Can anyone give me a clue to what happened??? I didnt over hunt stands, rotated them with the wind. In the past 2 days it is picking up alittle.. Help...

I have had non stop action seeing bucks every time out sometimes 3 different. Haven't seen a lot of chasing more seeking than chasing. Find the does.

I firmly believe that in my section of Z5, that one day of the season you must be in woods all day was 11/2, in spite of the 40MPH winds... I saw wild rut action from my kitchen window, and all around my neighborhood. Watched a nice 8 breed a doe on edge of my yard. Could have put on a spot and stalk, but just enjoyed the deer porn... Got in stand by 2, and it was wild until dark, seeing 2 nice 8's and several dinks and wild chasing. The next morning was slow, but I did see the two 8s cruising and had I been in the next stand closer to my house instead of deep in the woods in my "best" rut stand, would have had the bigger 8 that walked right under my stand... But from the afternoon of 11/3 to afternoon of 11/9, I barely saw a deer and if I did, it was usually just a lone button buck or lone doe fawn. Trail cam pics showed nothing. All my friends were reporting same...

To me - I consider that slow difficult period was "lockdown". Since afternoon of 11/9 seeing lots of deer again, and bucks are cruising and chasing. I started seeing full-rut action on 10/26 by me, so it makes sense that 11/2 was "peak chasing". That high wind probably contributed to the wildness of it, as there were two hot does in my woods and that scent blowing around made them so crazy.

I did hunt as a guest with someone in Z13 on 10/30 and took this decent 159lb dressed weight 9point... There was no sign of rut down there in Basking Ridge at that time...

Excellent, way to go Jack. Looks like he just had a red lolly pop. Saw 3 bucks today around my job site. 4, 6 and a 8 with about a 16" spread.

Nice buck Jack!I agree with everything you said, except where i hunt when I think the big boys are locked down I still see small bucks.Same property for almost 30 yrs. I never had a first week of Nov. like that almost nothing!!Now there running all over.It seems like it is 10 days later? Never took much stock in the moon phase stuff .....but I think maybe I should.

Been rough, tough and nip and tuck all the way. Logged over 60 straight hours last week in a tree. Let a lot of respectable deer go but I am holding out for a particular buck. Give it a go again this weekend. Last Friday the 7th was by far the most activity I had seen the entire rut. Too bad I was watching it all from my I-Phone from my text cams. If I was in my stand that day I would be in a better place. Oh well thats why it is called hunting and not shooting. Good luck everyone. Enjoy every minute of the hunt.

Quite a year you're putting together Jack! Good for you!

Passed a 90" 8 last night. Broadside at 18 yards...tempting the way my year has been going. Haven't seen a shooter buck in the flesh yet.

28-Nov-14
Well sounds like mixed reviews.... Still really have not seen any rut activity since the last week of Oct. But thats hunting... Haven't given up, still putting numerous hours in seat. Just tough when you are hunting 1 or 2 particular bucks. I shot a respectable buck (120's) in september and have had 2 really good ones on camera that been holding out for. Passed a few really nice bucks up, but gonna hold out for 1 of the Big Boys.... Hey Jack, nice year!!!! Good luck and hunt safe to all.

Yesterday in the Watchung reservation I saw a mature 8pt standing waiting for a doe to get up at 1 pm.This morning a big buck was leaving my hunting property at 6 am and on the way back to my truck at 11 I bumped a single doe and 3 of the biggest bucks I have seen all season!!!It's not over yet!On stand 5 does and a spike no shots by 9 I already had a good hunt.
