Judging the Health of Deer

I learned something new recently, and with the snow depths now. Thought I would share so some of you may look at this as you harvest your deer.
Quite simply break, cut open a large leg bone preferably. Look at the marrow inside. Healthy deer with plenty of food will have a white marrow. One that is lacking food will have a redish colored marrow that is more runny. The later deer is most likely not going to make the winter.
Take a look, let us know what you are seeing out there!!

The deer wouldn't be very healthy after you do that to them though, would they?

There will not be any deer in that condition yet. That is what happens when they have been starving and run down. The body begins to use up the stores. More likely to find that condition in late winter after a rough time.

No dont expect to see much of it now. Just thought it woudl be something guys could look at when they get their deer. Especially late season and after the rut.

It won't show even then, it is late winter early spring when it will show up.
