Gun season is upon us. Where I hunt (Oneida/Vilas) counties, there is 30" of snow and more coming. I plan to hunt on showshoes, try to cut a track, and hope it is a buck. Also going to look into recent clear cuts near homes. What is your plan?

We have about 16 inches in Southern Bayfield county. With the below zero weather, deer are sticking to heavy balsam stands and near food sources- in this area thats bait or clear cuts. So they are pretty much penned up with does and hanging out near food. Clear cuts are the best option. THe open hardwoods have a little night action but catching one in the open in hardwoods may be a little tough with all the snow. I will be hunting a clear cut on opening day that is covered with tracks- it a two year old cut, with some cover and pine stands left- its perfect- No snowshoes for me-yet.

I'll be hunting in Oneida County this weekend too. I'll be real close to Lake Tomahawk. My parents property connects up to some state land and I usually just wander into the edges of that public land. My parents did say there are doing some logging in that state land so maybe I'll focus on those areas.

I hunt northern Polk county, so not as far north as some of you, but we have 8-10 inches of snow on the property. This past Saturday, we took a couple of the bigger atvs, and drove to each stand on the property, to make a trail for the hunters to walk on this gun season. On Sunday, I went back out and the deer were already using the Atv tracks to travel. Unfortunately, so were the wolves. But I noticed the highest concentration of tracks in the areas that have been logged within the last 4 years. (Even more tracks, than in the standing corn field.)

Where are you guys getting your snow depth numbers from? I record weather data here i northern Sawyer and look at several sources online for snow depth and cannot find those numbers anywhere.
Here is one link, not a ,lot of stations but 7-10 in this area is more like what is there.

I think a lot of guys are giving numbers of total snowfall vs. what is settled on the ground? Big difference. My brother lives in Marquette and many years they have 125-175 inches … imagine if all that was on the ground! ;)

True. Last winter here in Seeley (near Hayward) I had 133.4 inches total snow for the winter but the most on the ground at one time was 32.5 inches and that was on March 4.
This data can be found on the COCORAHS website and NOAA.
