Just thought this might be a fun thread, keep it simple, short, and on topic. I'm going to my in laws near Fairchild, I'm taking my old Martin bow. The 30-6 for my 14 yr old, 30-30 for my 11 yr old. My wife and two dogs so they can visit the in laws while me and the boys are out killin stuff.
Undecided. Will make a decision at 3 AM when the boys and I get up. Hate hunting gun season in farm country. More deer and bigger antlered bucks though. Love hunting in snow and north of 64. If we go north, it will be a spot in Vilas County off of N. Model 70 30 06
Will be headed up to Door County. Tradition with my dad. We will be using our Remington 870 Buckmaster slug guns. We hunt on Washington Island and its still shotgun zone even after the law change last year. I enjoy shotgun, because it's more of a challenge anyway. Really looking forward to it. Be safe and good luck to all.
I do gun hunt for the tradition with family. Shotgun in West Salem. I shot a buck with bow so I'm content. Basically going to observe and be a part of it.
Marinette County, Wausaukee. Ruger 7mm for opener. After the opener, will hunt in Columbia Cty with bow for the remainder of season.
Hayward area hunting with my neighbor. Using a Ruger 77R in 30-06. Gosh I hope it warms up, too old to like hunting in this single digit weather.
Expect to see deer but don't really expect to shoot any. Would be a total bonus if I do.
Manitowoc County, 12 ga. Browning shotgun. I'm going for more so as tradition. It will be me, my dad, and my best friend, this is second time hunting. Hoping he gets his first deer. I wish I was a little more optimistic about the opener but I have feeling the deer numbers are going to be way down. DNR needs to come up with a better solution so the deer heard can recover. Anyone agree?
Lake Tomahawk (Oneida County) Highway D. Model 70 30-06.
Sawyer County (Ojibwa) with my brother-in-law, father-in-law, and his two brothers. Remington 740 30-06. This will be only my second season gun hunting (third bow) so I'm (hopefully) looking forward to some action!
Portage/Marathon Co. area. Myself, my son, my best friend and my 3 brothers and their boys. Love the gathering and all being at deer camp. We sleep in Monday morning and wake to pots off coffee and solve all the worlds problems then. Using a Winchester model 70 stainless 30.06 with a Kreiger barrel.
My place in Waupaca county with family and friends, 9 total,39th year. 7 all day sits, always fun. Still need lots of corn to go down by friday or many bucks will see another year and deer will be fat.
southern Bayfield, about 12 guys and this will be our camps 56th yr. We do it old school, all wool red plaid, pumps and levers and still hunting. If you want to get your mojo flowing for the gun season go to redplaidgang on instagram
Walworth County, Savage 30-06
Lincoln county behind my house. Opening weekend. 7MM-08 then after thanksgiving down to my sons to hunt a couple days in the farmland region.
Shawano Co. 7mm Rem Mag. Maybe the bow second weekend.
Hunting with my two sons on our 80 acres in Calumet County. Spent 70 hours in the trees this fall with a bow and saw 35 deer total but nothing I wanted to shoot. I will be with my old favorite a 6mm Remington 700 ADL. My youngest with be working a Browning A Bolt in 30-06 and my oldest with his Browning BPS 12 gauge. Good luck everyone.
Polk County to my hunting shack. We've been there since 1971. I'll hunt with my Weatherby Vanguard bolt .270 from the stand, or my Remington 7600 pump 30.06 during drives.
We will have 17 hunters in the woods opening weekend. ranging from 12 to 78 years old.
Wausau that is a heck of. Rub! Lol shoot that buck.
Sheboygan cty. Using a BAR.06 or ruger 270 if I am sitting with my boy :)
Awesome thread, ignore the guy who used to post all his DIY work, many not involving hunting. This is a site where HUNTERS share their lives 24/7/365, not just show what they shot with bow one day a year.
I'll be alternating between a .30-06 bolt Winchester camo and Remington Wingmaster 12-gauge with slug barrel depending on what type of cover in Door and Kewaunee counties, then going with a .45 or .50 caliber muzzleloader come later on in the muzzle hunt. When one of the kids comes along, they'll be shooting a 20-gauge Remington or 12 Remington. Even though I'm an "out in the open" type of hunter, was hoping to sit in a shack with my dad, but with this cold he's firm that he's not going after 66 years of gun hunts (started right after a stint in the Army). Supposed to be 40 degrees Sunday, so maybe can get him out for a few hours in the afternoon if it's not raining. Looking at possible fog, and high winds opening day, maybe rain by afternoon.
Southern Taylor County between 29 and 64. 10 of Us, I will be using my 30-06 That was my Grandpa's, My dads, and now mine. Was contemplating using the AR I got for my bachelor party this year, but with my luck I will see a big buck at 200+ yards, and I would hate to not be packing enough of a punch at that distance. 150 and closer I am deadly accurate with it and have no doubt I could get two in the boiler room before it felt the first hit thanks to Uncle sams training. But why take the risk?
My grandfather and his friend George will be hunting together for their 55th season. Right now my Grandpa has a bad chest infection and is really hoping he gets better in the next couple days. He said if this was Thursday he would not be able to make it. He is 85 years old, sharp as a tack and late last September he had 40% of his right lung taken out because of cancer. He still made it up for deer season and shot a nice little buck. That is why this chest infection is giving him such a problem. He and I would both appreciate your prayers, it will really destroy him if he can't make it.
Hunting my family's land in Sheboygan County. Me with my .54 Cal Hawkins, my bro-in-law with a 12 gauge. My son will join us Sat afternoon after his basketball scrimmage and he shoots a 20 gauge 870.
Winnebago County, Tikka T3 Lite .270, 4 cases busch light, 12 pack redbull
My son and I will be hunting our land in Pierce county. I will either be using my .50 cal muzzle loader or my .270. My son will be shooting his little savage 30-30 bolt, it's a great, accurate little gun.
PSEUSER, I grew up in Manitowoc county and I think the herd is in reasonably good shape there with most of the land being privately owned. You should see some deer. Good luck to your party.
Lincoln cty , mentoring a 13 year old on Sat , 15 year od on sunday .On my own the next 3 days . Will use a 1886 Winchester with custom loaded 33 winchester ammo . yes its an original .
Very busy week with last minute , " my gun doesn't shot , eject , jams , or can't hit the target . Been out to the range 5 days in a row . Mostly dirty guns or messed up scopes .
REALLY REALLY hoping I dont have to go. Not looking like it, but I still have my hopes!!!
Ruger Hawkeye 300RCM for rifle when mentoring a youth hunter then Remington Genesis with Thor 250 gr non sabot bullet over 100 gr Blackhorn 209.
Central Waupaca County, taking 2 870 20ga. and my T/C Encore 12ga. My 10 year old daughter will be hunting for the first time, she has been coming with since she was 7. If we see something to shoot, she will be using the same 870 that I used on my first gun hunt, an old Wingmaster that my dad bought when he was young. If I don't get to "hunt", I'll be fine with that but there seems to be enough deer in that area that we could both fill up.
Northern Marinette Co.Hunting with my daughter, 4 brothers ,1 brother in-law & 1 nephew first 4 or 5 days. Still love the deer camp traditions.Big fish fry with 2 other camps Friday afternoon plus numerous other activities. After Thanksgiving its usually Kewaunnee Co. making small group pushes. Good luck everyone & be safe.
Florence county same camp with pretty much the same gang. My dad took me there when i was 12 years old. This year taking my 13 and 18 year old boys.34 years great fun great tradition.18 year old will be toting the browning 270 i bought in 1986 .13 year old a savage 243. Cant wait 15 guys in camp this year.
Ridge Runner, gotta love those menu traditions!
My deer camp's menu has been virtually unchanged since 1972.
Friday night: Pheasant, cheesy vegetables, rolls Sat. night: Steaks (now switched to beef tenderloin), cheesy potatoes, fried potatoes, onions Sunday night: Spaghetti, salad, bread Monday night: Chicken on grill Tuesday night: Stir Fry Weds night: Leftover night Thursday - everyone home for Thanksgiving Friday night: Pork tenderloin, cheesy vegetables, rolls Saturday night: Venison steaks, cheesy potatoes, fried potatoes, onions
and of course we have pies for dessert each night.
Not to mention hearty chili, chicken noodle soup, and hot dogs for lunch each day.
We eat like kings! I love it.
Dampland...do you guys get any hunting in lol.
Dampland got room for a few more? Haha that sons great!
Dampland, with a menu like that, you definitely do not want to be the last to the outhouse! All that cheese! You might as well shove a cork in your ass! LOL.
It is great to hear about all the camps still going. I am the lone survivor of our camp. All the others have gone under. Hope to start a new tradition this Saturday with both my boys going together with me for the first time. If this goes well, next year, want to get my daughter to go as well. Good hunting, be safe, and stay away from those Fing cigarettes. They will destroy a good camp in the blink of an eye. i was the only one that didn't smoke.
The menu item that is always the same for us is My grandfathers Chili. Makes one big batch thursday when he normally gets up there and it lasts through the following weekend.
Today I'm slaving away smoking ribs for dinner Saturday night. Only half way though, its not easy smoking enough Ribs for ten people in a little 3 racked smoker.
Good luck this weekend to all going out, be safe, enjoy the memories, the food, and the people.
Marathon Co carrying a Glock lol. Good luck hunting and be safe. I hope I can help a few drag out some deer. I really enjoy talking to successful hunters and hearing those stories!
Hunting Vilas Co with wife and kids, inlaws, bro-inlaws. I will be sporting a brand new Winchester Model 70 Super grade in .308. Then headed back to farm land for Thanksgiving with the Hoyt Carbon Matrix.
Good luck to everyone, be safe....
OOH the menu chili of course.A big tossed salad ribeyes with baked potatoes mushrooms and a couple loaves of garlic bread homemade cookies and a couple Old fashions.A great meal to look forward to while sitting on stand.
Bayfield County for deer camp. Town of drummond. Taking my model 700 in 300 win mag. Gonna be real picky as I have a whitetail, Mule deer, and elk in the freezer. Back to Waukesha County midweek with bow in hand.
Grant county public land, .270 Browning A-bolt, hope for the best but expect the worst, opening day my favorite day of the year bring it!!!!!
Going down to Vernon County with my 10 yr old son. He will be shooting a TC .270 I will be sitting next to him hopefully watching him shoot his first deer.
Our property in Richland county. Rifle still to be decided but leaning to the .375 H&H. Brothers and friends, although one will be missing as he takes care of terminally ill wife. They will both be in our thoughts and prayers. Ma's stew and chili, two items she has made for us since the early 70's.
Not to concerned about the weather beyond what setting on the heater and where to hang all those pesky walkin in clothes.
Although not my thing, November you sure know how to hunt in style. I admit the shooting houses would be nice in the nasty weather. But I love being out there in the air, hearing, seeing, smelling, and yes freezing sometimes.
NWO - my group actually hunts VERY HARD, with nearly all of us sitting dark to dark opening weekend, and then the rest of the season most hunt all day, except for a 1-2 hour lunch break.
We just like to eat well, of course having no electricity at the shack, means we normally don't sit down to eat until around 9pm each night.
Buck Suicide - sorry but no, in fact because our group is so big, we had to incorporate rules about 15 years ago, as to who could and couldn't join our group. (Spouses, children, and grandchildren of the land owners only) So for example my Mom's husband, and my sister's brother-n-law cannot hunt with us. Assuming no more retiring hunters in the near future, we will potentially have 21 hunters in camp next season for opening weekend.
10orbetter - yes, it can be a line in the morning for the outhouse, but no one seems to complain. My group is full of former athletes, with the average member being over 6'2 and 200 pounds. I'm currently the most affected by gravity at 6'2 & 350 lbs. While we have a 16 year old who is already 6'7" and 200 pounds. So as you can see, we need a lot of food to keep this crew going!
EDIT: The guy who built our outhouse (back in 1982) is a contractor, so he made it complete with a venting system and heater. Thing works great, and only can be bad if you are directly downwind of the vents.
Damp, at our camp years ago, you always wanted to be the first to hit the head. Nobody ever limed the joint and we would laugh hysterically at one of our guys that gagged and sometimes got the dry heaves in the morning.
So, this thread became exactly what I thought. Most of us bowhunt for the hunting and gun hunt for the family/tradition/comraderie, Wisconsins gun deer season is about so much more than just getting a deer. The food, stories, the deer taken and the ones that got away, that is what makes this next week so special. Keep your traditions alive. Good luck to all!!
Hunting close to home here in Vernon county, Taking my son age 15 his favorite 3030 Marlin lever gun as he calls it, and my 30 year old hunting nut daughter that has taken over my 3006 Remington BDL. Me I will be using my 270 Remington pump. And if its like the past years will helping daughter with her deer onto the trailer and listening to the son complain about his sister allways getting a deer and my daughter telling him if you would just set still maybe you would see something. We have a great time and I am pretty much just the guide for the gun hunting.
I forgot, $1 bills, will be takin lots of $1 bills.................. ;)
Tri-county thats funny, due to our bathroom deficiencies at the cabin we brought over our old original outhouse my grandpa made in the mid 50's. I'm sure Grandma appreciated he built it in the front yard "where outhouse should be built" then got the great idea to creosote the whole thing, strap it to the top of the station wagon and drive it from New Berlin up to Barnes. Both guys and the new station wagon covered in creosote. One of a million deer camp stories
Will be taking my son on his first mentor hunt in Polk County Sat and sun,Then back to work.
Hunting a little but in Manitowoc County. Trying out my new toy, 8.5" 300 Black Out with an EoTech HHS-II on it.
"Our property in Richland county. Rifle still to be decided but leaning to the .375 H&H."
Capt Mike...... Has your case of "Yits" carried over to your guns?
Then when I head to Oklahoma I'll be taking my Winchester M70 Ultra Grade in 270. Years ago my father gave my brother and I each one of these rifles. He passed away 4 years ago and we decided we're going to use them this year in honor of our father.
Marinette county just north of Wausaukee. With my wife having a blood disease for the last 6 months have not been able to get out bowhunting much.Same guys for the last 17 years on my land and rustic camp.Hope I can shoot the Rem 7mm (CAN'T WATE).
Awesome looking firearm (ultra)!
Marinette County, with Dad, son, and friends...about 13 of us.
The family tradition, which has expanded to the group we hunt with, is meeting up at the pickup truck for lunch each day, usually around 11:30a.m. There's something special about a warm bowl of chili and a burger, straight off the Coleman grill. People always say, "ah that smell drives deer away," but over the years we've seen many a deer while we're eating.
Will have my trusty 30.06 with me, but honestly don't care whether I shoot a deer or not. I have three goals for the 9-day. 1) safe hunt, 2) my son has an opportunity to shoot his first buck and 3) I see a couple deer...
Like the earlier poster said, I hunt with my bow, I enjoy the tradition and time with friends and family during the 9-day.
Dampland Your right about the meals. After the Fri. fish-fry its rib-eyes over the fire Sat evening with Old Fashions.Mon evening visit cousins camp for wings, pizza & pumpkin pie.Hungry already. Gotta love the traditions,it's what keeps me going up north.Forgot to post what I'll be carrying.Up north its a newer Savage 270.Back home for our walks it's my old Remington 30-06 pump with a Redfield 4 power wide view scope .First thing I bought when I started at the mill 37yrs. ago.
Geitz, put an apple on your head and we'll find out.
Sawyer County with my Rem 300, 30-06. Been a deer camp since the late forty's. I'm a second generation, not many of the third in camp, only one this year. Mine has hockey and work. I hope he doesn't quit.
Waupaca county with family. Hope to get a few deer and keep the trespassers and vandals out of the woods. Winchester Model 70 .270 and Thompson Contender 7-30 Waters.
The Granddaughter will be out over Thanksgiving break. She has 5 more years until she can pull the trigger.
Hunt safe!
I'll be looking about the same (perhaps a little wetter). The 1100 will become a 7mm Rem Mag. Split Rock, WI.
Portage County with my AR-15 between me and my 11 year old son. We shoot the same gun and have been very successful with the 5.56 ammo I load for it. Longest tracking job was 10 yards from POI on the largest buck we got last year.
Southern Price County, Savage 270, case of pabst blue ribbon
My daughter she has a 243 looking for a doe and then she is done. If she fills I will grab my bow. My days of carrying a gun are over.
Ashland area. 300 ultra mag, ported barrel, 180gr hand loads, leupold scope.
OR
Hoyt Maxxis 31
308 savage in Northern Marathon County.
I'll be hunting in Iowa county with my buddy sitting with me running the video camera. I'll be sporting my little Ruger .308 for opening weekend. Then will probably switch to the Browning 7mm short mag. I would like to use my Marlin .308 MX but cant find shells for it. Shoot straight everyone.
Jackson County, Using my Remington 30-06..... Hunt saturday morning, head to the local tavern for the badger game and call the 2014 gun season a wrap!!! Pretty much just go up to keep tradition alive, cant wait to be back in the big woods with my bow though!!
Wausaudog, I checked out that Red Plaid Gang on instagram, love those pictures! Very cool.
thanks oaktree, we have fun w/ that and its cool what old pics people post
Rusk County, putting all three rifles into service. I will use 7mm Rem Mag, A-bolt Medalion, with Leopold VX3 3.5x10 40mm. My son is using my grandfathers sporterized Yugo M24/47 8mm Mauser with a VX3 1.5x5 32mm. His friend will use the Winchester new model 70 .243 with VX3 2.5x8 40mm.
Forced to go now as 2 of the group have called saying they are coming. Got some attitude again though because I have not baited or put stands up for them. No matter how many times I tell them IT'S ILLEGAL!!! They dont hear me. No matter how many times I tell them you wont shoot a big buck over bait most likely. They dont hear me. Funny, the only ones to see or shoot a big last year, like in years past. Was my wife and daughter. They go where dads say to go. Not to some spot they been sitting year after year over a corn pile.
I wont even hunt or buy a license, just a 4WD taxi. Then it will be the same as years past./ The whining to leave starts 30 mins into season. Sunday be worse yet, as a mom and daughter will be up walking around in under 30 mins. None of this garbage from my girls though. They go where I put them, and dont say a word until they shoot or I pick them up. Funny that they are the ones to see deer and punch tags, lol
I HATE GUN SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!
Our group is set and ready to have another successful year as like in the past as this photo shows! :)
But sometimes I prefer to go it alone!
I use to haul my deer this way when they had to be out in the open to be legal to transport but now haul them in the back
This one is for Howatt since this is Bowsite!! :)
My dad from back in the day. Wish I had that rifle. He traded it for a Remington 742 that I do have. The old Winnie would be worth about 2500.00 today and the 742 is about 400.00 on a good day. LOL
Northern Bayfield county. Taking a 25-06 ABolt Browning. 2.5 ×12 Pentax scope
