Just got up here in Ozaukee County. 32 degrees. You can hear an occasional cloud burst, been listening to that since 2 AM. Lots of standing corn in the fields yesterday. Looks like the weather is going to force us to sit in the ground blind out of the rain. Good luck and safe hunting. Monday I will be back on stand with a bow in one of my other spots.

Good luck out there guys, unfortunately for me, due to work deadlines we can't even head up until tues. It's nice to be the boss most of the time but when things like this happen it can be a little frustrating. Be safe, shoot straight, stay dry. I'm looking forward to seeing some pics on here shortly.

Had a buck chasing a doe behind my blind. Unfortunately, I have my blind backed up against two cedar trees. Couldn't see either one, but they weren't 30 feet behind me. He was not grunting. He was snorting like he was mad. It is foggy! Three deer shot pretty close to me. Could hear the talking as they were pulling them out after the shots. Sounds like brown is down where I am? Rock county.

Passed a doe with fawn, spike and fork between 6:40-6:50 this morning, all within 60 yards. Minutes later, a "once a year hunter" comes in, sees me in the semi-open but rolling upland forest adjacent to a swamp and plowed ag lands, and proceeds to sit down 75 yards away (after walking back and forth for 10 minutes). Then every five minutes he stands, and every 10 or so takes a walk 50-100 yards into open field, using his rifle scope to look around. Will definitely move a few hundred yards this afternoon when my son is along. Son's first deer hunt so he'll take any decent shot opportunity.

Two friends across the road shot a 6-point (her first buck) and two does on a corn field that was cut yesterday. Still mostly standing corn around us though.

Great deer guys. Congratulations

11.5 hours on stand, 5 shots at 6:15 AM, 3 Roast Beef and Swiss sandwiches, half a box of Little Debbie's, 6 capri sun, some guy shooting at 4:45 PM as we walked to my truck, and no deer. Not a single deer in a metro unit, 77M. Either the guys at the DNR are mentally retarded or really, really inept. Because this sure doesn't deserve the metro designation. The day was salvaged by the most important part, a great day out with my youngest son. I'll hit it tomorrow, my son is going to sleep in, just couldn't hold his interest any longer. Those shots were the only shots all day.

Hayward area. First shots fired 20 minutes before starting time. Second set 10 minutes early.

About 8:00 am an average 8 walked by, stopped broadside at 15 yards. I let him keep walking. Only deer I saw.

Three days ago this bad boy showed up in easy range of that same stand, that is really AM, not PM. I think he is in his prime, thinking 4-5 years old. Your thoughts?

Partner saw one buck, big body and could have shot but could not tell just what his antlers were so he did not shoot.

From: alderrub

Four deer killed pretty close to me. I saw one fawn fly by after (what I assume was) her momma shot over the hill on the adjacent property. Had a buck chasing behind my blind. Never saw him. He was close. Sat entire day. Cannot believe how dark it was at closing? Heard a few shots at close to 5 pm. What could you see at five? Shadows and silhouettes?

I took a very little walk to see where those deer were chasing, and realized I need to buy a few more stands. There is so much of this property I don't bowhunt, that I need to. Found out the grass is greener where I set up my ground blind. It is a 3/4 mile walk, but well worth looking into. I can drive my four wheeler to this spot, so deer dragging will be minimal.

I do not particularly like gun season. Too random for my liking, even on private land. Bow hunting is so much more peaceful. I guess knowing four deer are gone in one day from my core area saddens me a bit? I pass many deer throughout the season, and always wonder why more bucks don't reach maturity? Didn't realize (because this is the first time I gun hunted this land) that this many hunters got off their asses to gun hunt? This country block 960 acres is bow hunted by four hunters. Gun season rolls around and that number multiplies substantially.

Nice buck Matrix. Pete is right, it does look like a mule deer. That is pretty cool.

My report, PATHETIC! No other way to put it. Sat all day Saturday. Sat 5 AM until 10 AM and from 1:00 PM on today and did not see a deer. This is the same property where I have been hunting a big buck for more than three years with a bow, where I passed on several does, took a 1.5 year old doe, passed on three bucks, arrowed but did not recover a buck and saw countless fawns during early bow season. All I can figure is they are locked up in the uncut corn across the roads to the north and west. Or, everyone around me is baiting with front-end loaders. probably 20 plus road hunters slowly drove by today. Not a single shot in the entire 3.8 mile rectangle that makes up the block where my 40 is, the entire weekend. Listened to shots 5 plus miles away. I can tell you this, gun season next year, I will be north of 64!

I sat Friday afternoon with the bow from about 2:00-dark in a fresh clear cut and nothing was moving but the wind was blowing pretty good Friday afternoon. I have yet to see a deer when I've had my bow in hand.

Sat pretty much all day on Saturday with the impending weather on Sunday. Real nice morning, little wind, temps were pretty decent. I saw a doe and 2 fawns about 8:30 AM. They hung around for quite awhile so I observed them through my range finder and binoculars. I kept hoping a buck would follow the same line through the woods they did but no luck. A group of about 10+ hunters drove the area I was hunting about 11:30 and I didn't see anything pushed through. Went in for a little lunch and then came back out for the afternoon. I found an area where the deer had been bedded down all over the place but no one home that evening.

I had planned to hunt that same area Sunday morning but the fog was so thick in Northern Wisconsin you couldn't see anything. On public land that can just be scary too! I elected to wait awhile and see if the fog cleared. It was still foggy up that way at 1:00 PM. Just crazy weather!

Just happy to get out in the woods and see some deer. I didn't see too many deer on trucks headed home yesterday afternoon.

I'm hoping I can get back out there after Thanksgiving on Thursday. Maybe Friday afternoon I'll sneak down to hunt an afternoon.

Sawyer county, todays all day wet snow has frozen to every twig in the woods. Visibility 10 yards or less in many areas. Every trail we walk including 2 track roads have ice/snow laden branches bent down, many have their tops touching the ground. Can no longer drive in to that woods we hunt, adds a half mile walk through bent over branches to where we usually park. Season is pretty much over on that parcel.

We will head to another parcel that has way less browse and small trees. Visibility should be better there.

That young lad missed a nice buck this morning then left his stand for his drivers test (and passed) and then got back in the stand in the blinding snow and shot that buck. Hunted in the rain yesterday. Super quiet stalk on 3 bedded does. I watched them for 35 minutes at 75 yards. Stayed through the snowstorm and cut a fresh track as I walked out. Good luck this morning! Yesterday I finished the most grueling work shift I've ever had. 32 hrs straight, the only two breaks I had were to eat a snickers and pee. But it was worth it. All my deadlines were met, responsibilities taken care. Now, I can finally pack the truck and head to fairchild. My boys and I should be in the field by one! Happy birthday to me, I'm hoping my boys can connect on a nice birthday buck!

Love this thread, nice photos and great to read about hunters doing what they do. Happy Birthday Crusader dad and good luck to you and the boys. Be safe — you can only run on adrenaline (and energy drinks) so long. Maybe you can sneak in a nap while the boys maintain vigil!

Could shoot at 6:30 today. I shot the lead doe (largest one in the group)at 6:40 this morning of a large group coming back into the woods after feasting in the standing corn. The deer sign is amazing. There are a lot of deer in the area. Saw a group of 4 still standing in a picked corn field when I went to register this doe. Now the hunting crew will reassemble for the Thanksgiving hunt to do drives.

There is about 900 Lbs of deer hanging on the beam so far.

Sat again this AM to no avail. I don't know what the answer is. Be back out tonight after getting some work done. Great meat-pole Matrix. Beautiful pictures guys. What is striking to me, is Matrix post is the only one of its kind on here, I remember a day when there would have been 20 guys posting meat-pole pictures like that if internet would have been available. Matrix picture speaks volumes!

happygolucky I hunt northern Portage County and southern and central Marathon County. All farm country with lots of standing corn and swamps. The standing corn is no problem at all if you are willing to scout, read sign and adapt and move stands based on all the tracks in the snow telling you where they are bedding.

Too many guys hunt the same stand year after year out of tradition and then complain when things change and they dont see deer. Gun hunt like you bow hunt and move around and scout and most of all hunt dark to dark. You can only kill them when you are in the woods.

There are a ton of deer in the area. The picked corn fields are full of deer in the am and pm. The volume of sign and trail cam pics tells us the population is strong. Ive seen deer on every sit. Shot a bunch and passed a bunch and would have had another if my bolt didnt freeze up.

The view from my stand tonight. Several does passed through the area out of this bedding area to head to the standing corn. I gave them a pass. Waiting on the others in the group to come back to se if they got any deer.

Woods and fields full of fresh tracks today, but only hunted last two hours and nothing seen. Was so bright at closing (photo actually taken two minutes after with rifle lowered) couldn't believe I had to quit. Heard shooting for the next 10 minutes and while driving home, saw a total of 13 deer in several different fields. Some of my spots are only 10 minutes apart, yet are seven full minutes of extra legal light if hunting south zone A vs. north. Warden could use discretion but not worth the risk.

You know Matrix, you make a good point. I have not been hunting like I bow hunt. I've been moving but, only three locations out eight within the property. During bow, I make it a point to never sit the same stand two days consecutive. Have not done that since gun. Hopefully, I will get this turned around in the morning.

4:42 am. 6 degrees. Brrrrr. I like it cold for deer hunting but not this cold. I don't think my boys will have the drive to sit very long this morning. I guess that means I am hunting. I'm going to forego the bow because I'm worried I won't be able to draw being that cold. Today I will have my lucky 12 gauge with 3 in. Sabots. I can reach out to about 150 yds with the old mossberg. Hopefully I get a shot. HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!!!!

I didnt hunt this morning and thats the first time I didnt sit on the 2nd opening morning in many years. Helping prep for the feast.

I did help another member of our group with gutting, rinsing and hanging his antlerless deer on the beam.

The rest of the group is itching to do drives for the next 2 days but I am done for the year.

Another great season for our group and now the butchering phase kicks in. Not as thrilling as the hunt but still a great time with the group as we share the harvest so even the leakers that saved their bullets will get some meat (the can have the necks) grin.

This morning I gave in the my aging mothers wishes. She has been hounding me to shoot a deer but I keep telling her I have not seen the one I want to kill yet. Anyway, as she explained it to me last night, she doesn't want a tough old deer but rather a young one that she can chew!

So, that said, this morning I killed my mother a nice young doe. Rest of the day off, then back at it again tomorrow. Best of luck to all and best wishes for a great Thanksgiving.

I hunted the last 2 hours last night and then this morning until 10am. The woods was beautiful with the white snow clinging to everything and the sun bouncing off the snow this morning. No deer seen but I loved what Mother Nature painted. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

My 11 year old got his first doe yesterday. We were walking in to the stand and we kicked up a doe which I shot. We let the doe sit where it lay and sat til about 3:30 when a group of 2 does and 4 fawns came walking in. He shot it in the chest with the gun you see in the picture and dropped her where she stood. Really exciting to see him drop a deer in it's tracks.

We've got a little fresh snow here again this morn so I think I'm going to wait till first light and drive around checking the tracks leading back into the corn, when I find a big track I'm going to still hunt the corn rows. It's windy enough that my noise should be covered. I've never tried this style of hunting but what's the worst that can happen? If there in the corn I might as well got get em.

Sat the last two hours of the day today. Ok, don't fall out of your stands and chairs, I actually saw my first deer of the gun season. I know, I know, a major accomplishment! It was a doe fawn that I have video and stills of. She was moving very deliberately, as if there was a zombie behind every tree. Her twin brother was nowhere to be seen. Figure he got whacked by shart-for-brains on the neighboring property. I'm on a roll! Good luck everyone.

I walked a ton of public land today in Jackson county, saw no deer but a Lot of fresh tracks and sign. The deer are out there. Sat my private land this evening and saw about 50 turkey. No deer. I think they are holding up in the standing corn until after dark. The kill in Fairchild is way down according to the girls at the local registration station. I don't think our population is down here they are just lucky enough to have that corn. I am excited for late season and very excited for the prospect of next year. Many many more deer will survive this season and this winter by me.

Took the wife out to the stand tonight as she had to work opening weekend and the first part of the week. As we walked to the stand with the wind in our face we sneaked up on a doe fawn browsing on cedar. Got in the blind and had another small deer walk through and then a half hour before dark a nice size doe with a fawn walked within 50 yards. She decided to hold out for a buck but might tomorrow take a doe if nothing else shows. She loved the woods with all the snow hanging on the branches. Was an enjoyable day to spend with the wife.

Hunting behind the house tonight seen 4 antlerless at about 1:40 and a doe and nubbin about 3:15 and that was it for the night. Thought tonight might be the night as I have a 7 point still getting pictures of and the neighbors didn't do anything stupid tonight that would hinder deer movement.

Good luck ten. I have to sit a different spot myself this morn, due to the wind, I'm hoping for the best but not counting on much, I too have had a tough season. I'm going to hunt till nine then go hang a two man my wife got me for my birthday. I think my boys kind of gave up on hunting this year. Neither one of them wanted to wake up this morn. I guess they will have to wait till next year for their first deer as this is our last day up here.

Beautiful morning, did not see a deer but, apparently I went in too far as a deer stepped in my tracks sometime between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

I did get one more piece to the puzzle that is the 2014 Gun Deer Hunt though. Around 8:30 there was a bunch of shooting to the South about a half mile as the crow flies. So, when I left my property for home, I decided to have a look see. Came up on a group that had been doing a drive and they had six on the ground. 4 buck fawns and 2 doe fawns. Stopped to congratulate them and take a picture to post here for everyone to see. Three of the guys blocked me from taking a picture and threatened to kick my ass if I did. Apparently they are man enough to put them on the ground but, too ashamed to admit it. So much for passing on bucks in the future.

Last day of this thread! Thanks to everyone for participating. Even though 77M goes until the 10th, I look forward to getting back to the bow. Been a tough gun hunt. Can't complain about the weather, in my book we had perfect conditions. I probably will do things differently next year. I can have this kind of gun hunt north of 64 and feel more like I am actually hunting. At least there, when you don't see anything, you have thousand different places to go. Good luck today and be safe. Headed out.

Sat Saturday afternoon with the wife in the blind. I did not take a gun but had the wife took hers. It was funny as the snow fell from the trees it pounded the pop-up blind and sounded loud. Just at prime time the pop-up roof decided to cave in on us. We had a good laugh as I pushed it back up. We saw a doe with a fawn and then later a nice size doe. She has only shot 1 deer in her life and even then she decided to pass on a doe in the hopes of a buck. As darkness settled in we packed up as fog formed around us. Will probably not go out Sunday as she wants to watch the game. I will probably take the muzzleloader out sometime next week. 10orbetter, have enjoyed this thread as well.

I have been reading this thread with interest since I returned from Bayfield County after hunting five days. I have hunted northern Bayfield County for 51 years and have seen deer numbers ebb and flow. There is no question numbers are down, especially during daylight hours! As a kid I remember seeing 10-20 deer every day. I have seen 3 in the last three years. I am sure there are lots of reasons-too many does taken, predation is much higher, bad winters, way more bow hunters and 4 wheelers making deer a bit more skittish, etc. The one thing that bugs me however is the fact that every year the DNR has some excuse other than herd size. They say it is too cold, too warm, too wet, to dry, too much snow, too little snow, etc. Spare me, sounds like kids making excuses. While I agree with others who say cars kill more deer than predators that is probably true state-wide, many even county wide but in specific geographic areas like ours it is not true. Bear and wolves kill many more deer than cars in the Brule-Flag River areas. I think a plan that would make sense, make the hunt more fun and help assuage some of the concerns of hunters over predation would be to return to the old days when we could take bear and coyotes during the deer season. I would suggest that we allow predator/bear hunting on a 3 year cycle in the northern forests. Year 1 only deer. Year 2 you can shoot a bear if you see one. Year 3 you can shoot a wolf/coyote if you see one. I am sure this would not fly but I think it makes a lot of sense. It would control predator numbers without eliminating their populations. It would make hunters feel they can do something about predation. It would offer the hope of tagging a bear occasionally. I would continue to limit doe permits in northern forests as well until the herd is 'healthy" whatever that means.

Coldest sit of the season tonight. The wind zapped all warmth from the walk to tree in quick fashen. Had two doe's come through with about 10 minutes of season left. Thanks CaptMike and happygolucky! We saw one small 8 pointer opening morning, which we passed and that's been it as far as bucks seen. The neighbor's didn't hunt at all around us, which probably contributed to less sightings of deer this year. May be losing this 10 acres we hunt next year as the owner may be moving out west, so we may have to give up deer hunting for awhile since I will not take him on public land.
