Does anyone know when bears den up for the winter?

I am thinking about heading up to the ADKs for a few days of camping and hopefully a bear.

i know it is a low probability endeavor, but i like the idea of a back country hunt.

have the bears already gone to ground at this time of year?

just realizing that the season up in the ADKs closes on the 7th so i guess that won;t be happening. oh well.

if anyone has any thoughts on a likely spot for bears in the lower tier, i'd love to hear it.

again, i realize this is low probability, but i wouldn't mind spending 2-3 days hiking around with a predator call and a bow just hoping to get lucky.

Bears in the Catskills are currently hibernating. The early cold weather blast, combined with the snow, pushed them into hibernation early. Perhaps at lower elevation one can be found, and maybe one or two didn't head into hibernation with the others, but the bear outlook is very poor for this weekend.

My brother saw a big 300-400 lb'er in Orange County on Friday so some of them are still out and about.

seen small boar yesterday in the northern Catskills.

A friend of mines MZ loader bear this week...they aren't all dened up yet.
