I was driving up to Rochester NY this past week and I saw a buck and a doe doing the nasty in a field not far from the thruway. First time I have ever seen this and especially this late.

The ladies that didn't get knocked up the first go around will and are ready to breed 28 days after the first estrus cycle. So the 18th will be the 2nd cycle in my neighborhood. You are most likely seeing that in your neck of the woods.

I think the ratio is pretty heavy so that this may go on awhile - I saw some very small fawns in late summer this year - never before did I see those

There are 2 breeding cycles, the major one in Nov and a 2nd minor one was mentioned by Clabman. I've seen fawns with spots in Sept, so definitely late season mating. Keep in mind that the bucks have to travel more to find receptive does, so it's not over yet, just a bit more spotty.
