Has anybody got a drone that they are using for scouting or looking for trespassers? Anyone considering getting one?
Or do you think it's too high tech and takes away from the true art of hunting? I bring this up because everyone is using cameras now. Drones are taking it a step further.
Wouldn't that be illegal? I know if you goto Alaska you cant hunt for so many hours after you fly in using a plane to spot and a drone to spot is the same.
But.... If its legal I plan on getting the Parrot wifi based driven off cell phone and would use it a lil and you can use it to jump deer your way... But that would be wrong too.... Just saying... lol
I wouldn't use it while hunting to find or jump deer. I think that would be unethical or at least bordering on it.
I think it would be neat to look for deer in August and September to be able to check out fields and feeding areas just to see what was there.
You are right, in Alaska and several of the Western Canada Provinces you can't hunt the same day you fly. You have to wait till the next day. That's so you can't fly around looking for animals then land a mile away and walk back and kill it.
Wow that would take chasing off trespassers up to the next level! Would you suggest missles or guns mounted on to them? LOL
WVM&M - you may have something there - you could almost turn a crossbow in to a drone!
I don't do it but know guys that do. I own cameras but hardly use them. I guess I should use them more. I am not into the drones. For me that is too high tech. But that is just me.
I guess I could see for catching video of trespassers, but for hunting, Really? Why not just stay home in the recliner and play a video game. I would be pretty ticked off if I was out hunting and some yuts starts buzzing the area with a drone. Pretty sure the drone might begin to experience some mechanical problems.
Smokey.... What timing for your post! I have been researching this very thing the past few weeks and seriously thinking about trying it. My biggest concern is if I can get George to help me look for it when I crash it...lol
He's a good guy, he'll probably help. Might have to get two. Use the second one to look for the first one.
Could probably setup a system to shoot a dart or something into the buck you would like before the season and just keep traCK of his travels. Would make the need for a trail cam almost obsolete!
If these ever get started for hunting I will probably give hunting up! Because I like the idea of chasing off trespassers! I would spend all my time chasing trespassers - diving bombing at the kids getting off the school bus! Would be better than any video game!
All you would need is a small GPS chip.
That's only if AR's become rule of the land! LOL
Why not put a tranquilizer on it shoot the deer go look and see if it's big enuff if not pull the dart and reload that would be good management practices
I would want one big enough to carry me to my stand. A transporter would be better but I would settle for a new set of knees
I always wanted one of those backpack jet packs like James Bond had to get to and up in my stands. An electric one would probably be best.
Yeah, if you forgot your treestand safety harness you could just zoom back home and get it. Nothing makes me feel safer than having my harness 20 feet up a tree so the 100 foot up in the sky in a flying backpack shouldn't bother me
Only problem would be flying poachers.
Yeah, and they would probably have crossbows.
all I can say is wow... I cant stop laughing.. I do enjoy visiting this site because of yall.
lol I have a guy come to my school shop class to demo rc planes and he had a 4 bladed helicopter with a go pro mounted to it,, what do you think the first thing I thought of was,,, man what a scouting tool.. but I think my wife would go off the deep end and leave me over that,,, just the other day she discovered all my game cameras in a group all together drying out from season and ask me "I didn't know you had that many cameras" and gave the "LOOK" but she don't scare me I run things at my house gc
Its a good thing you wife doesn't visit this site or you would have some explaining to do. You run things at your house lol. George, if you buy a drone you can keep it at my house so she won't find out you bought it

ok , somebody on this site has to get one and try it out. I volunteer gobbler. He should get a drone and use it on his farm and do a full report to share with us. Photos and ease of use would be required in such report. Gobbler , you can buy it for your wife for Christmas and borrow it like you do the vacuum cleaner and washing machine. Think of it as a service to inform those on here that are interested in this new gadget.
I want one that is can detect trespassers that flies over them and zaps them with a strong electric shock.
Someone will steal yours J.R. Good ole boys up there will take it and use it to find your stands

I plan on getting this one... with all the bells and whistles if I have enough tax money left over.
I can already see the uses for one of those. If I hear a gobbler 2 ridges over, just fly it over to see if it's with hens. If it is then I wouldn't have to run over there, set up and call just to have it go the opposite way.
How loud are they?
I thought you all were kidding until I opened the link.
hahahaha. too funny. MP. but you are probably right
Good point gobbler. I can use mine to see which of my treestands don't have other hunters in them so I will know which one I can hunt
I don't know much about them yet, but I think they run on electric batteries so I would think they would be pretty quiet?
yes they are fairly quiet. A guy had one at the Jefferson county fair. Sounds like a locust flying...
Depends on the size of drone I guess - I watched a show not too long ago that said they actually have some drones that are as small as a mosquito! Of course- if you get one of those drones that hovers - depending on size and accessories you plan to put on it - I could see using it for dropping you off to your stand and deer retrieval! Of course you could get the complete package and get the hover drone and the mosquito size one for tagging you deer with the gps chip!
You know what is funny - I remember reading an article in Bowhunter Magazine over 30 years ago - it was based on a fictional character - like Steve Austin of the 6 million dollar-man who was dropped off in some remote area after this world record size buck and he had all this futuristic equipment that he was using (similar to what we are joking about here). In the end though he decided not to shoot. Anyone else remember that article - it was along time ago!
I had dreams like that when I was in college back in the 70s.
A friend who does not hunt just got a drone to do some aerial photography - he showed me some pics that he took at a local recreation park and they were great. goes up to 600 feet high and a range of over a mile! All kidding aside, HD camera and video - I could see this being used to go out when leaves are off trees and getting some good aerial pics of your hunting spots. His was just a tad under $900. He says it is really easy to fly and has some kind of feature where it will automatically return to base.
They introduced a bill in the legislature last week that made HUNTING with a drone illegal. Unfortunately they added making a crossbow legal in the same bill.
So I guess crossbows will be legal next year. Hmmmmm
So I guess crossbows will be legal next year. Hmmmmm
We'll see? Just cause a bill is introduced dosen't mean it will pass. It may or it may not. Who knows, it may come out and pass that crossbows will be legal only if it's attached to a drone. LOL
Well then we will be able to hunt with drones just not crossbows. LOL Now I do not know one thing about politics but how dumb is that to put those two together?
Actually pretty smart. You put a bill together that has something that everybody can agree on(no hunting with drones), then attach something else to it.
Unfortunately, that's politics. That's how we got the Sunday hunting mess. They added the provision that each county could vote onto the original bill.
That's why at election time you see all these adds that say So and So voted for this or that. Most of the time the initial bill was something good then something else gets attached with it.
If I introduce a bill that says "No babies should be killed when they are 3 days old", then attach "Dentists have to pay 75% income tax", nobody is going to vote against it. If you do then you will be called a baby killer.
That's a bit of an extreme example, but that's how it works.
So it's smart to allow crossbows? I see what your sayin but what your sayin is they want crossbows just not drones
well I will just attach a crossbow to a drone... ok maybe not. I am getting a drone but not for hunting. cant afford a cross bow so that just means I will be sticking with my bow. either way tag soup tastes just like my coffee when I drive past Halltown paper mill in the morning sipping on it.
JR, the trouble is who are "they"?
And "they" can be anyone that has access to a legislature. A lobbyist, a friend that wants to use a crossbow during archery season, a cousin that owns a sporting goods shop that wants to sell crossbows.
Then the legislators bargain . If you vote for my bill, then I'll vote for your bill and so on and so forth.
Now when you say cannot be used for hunting does that mean you cannot just hunt with them or does it mean that you cannot even do a aerial photo of your hunting spots?
As I understand it, it means actual hunting with it. Where you are sitting on a ridge with your IPad and operating a drone with a gun on it on the next ridge.
Apparently, that type of hunting is occurring in Texas.
"They" are the people that bring this bill up and vote on it.
So whats the differnce of sitting on that same ridge watching your laptop flying the dron, as too sitting there and your trail cam sending you instant e-mails of deer going by it?
I think both shouldnt be used, but they are...
I guess the drones could cover a larger area..

So if there is going to be a crossbow season this year anyone know what dates they might use?
Myself if I were to get a drone it would be used this time of year to get aerial pics of my areas. Could really see the land and I would think would be cheaper than renting a plane. From what I have seen they don't have real long running times with the batteries and I think you would scare more deer rather than track them.
I will be getting the parrot bebop in the mail on Monday...
Only time I will have it in the woods it when I scout for stand placement. I can get an idea of what my view would be. But of course apparently I cant carry that day.... save the troubles of putting stand up and determining if its a good view or not.
