Hello, I am from NW PA and am taking my son on a hunt this fall. I know this is a bowsite, but guns are an option. The main goal is an affordable FUN hunt. Of course a buck is always great but my son will be 12 and has killed 5 deer in PA and likes shooting does. May rent a cabin near some public land or bring a camper.
Is anyone willing to recommend any areas?

Stonewall Jackson, Burnsville and Coopers Rock are all great places to fill a tag. Lots of deer and camping nearby.

Lake View Cabins in Lewis County, WV. Nice accomodations and thousands of acres of public hunting nearby. Good deer population and we have ample doe privledges.

Might want to wait until this years regulations come out before you make final plans. Because of the low deer kill we had this year the doe tags in some counties may be cut back.

Thanks for the info. Is there alot of pressure in the areas mentioned?
Also what time of year are the seasonal regs set?

I don't know much about the other places but I have hunted Coopers Rock and it got a lot of pressure when I hunted there. It's close to PA and MD and those pesky nonresidents pour in there. ( just kidding), but it did get a lot of pressure cause it is so close to two different states but it did have a lot of deer when I hunted it.
The DNR Commission sets the doe limits at their May meeting and it's released sometime in June.
Good luck

The Lake View cabins in Lewis County are nice, only about $100 last time I stayed there. I would make reservations early, only 3 cabins and they stay full. Hunting pressure is pretty heavy the first 3 days of rifle season. After that it is not too bad. Should not be a problem getting doe permits in Lewis Co. Good chance to see bucks, probably not many big ones.

if your bowhunting public land not to bad for pressure, but if gun hunting public land gets crowded ,, I won't hunt public land during gun season,,,Buery Mtn wma in fayette is nice and kinda of a sleeper

Hunted cooper's rock when I was at WVU good as place as any and if I recall aren't there AR's in place there now? Another good place is Sleepy Creek wma but again will be packed during rifle season.
