Just saw on the weather that the ave high temp for each day now starts to increase. That means Spring is on its way. Not soon but coming. It hasn't been that bad of a winter. My wife and kids have missed not having any big snow storms but I've loved the little snow. The deer need an easier winter after our last few. Hopefully we can get through the rest of winter without anything too severe and then have an early warm spring.

The only thing I dislike about this winter is that I am not making any money for snow removal. But I can live with that.

It's the end of January. Would take a major snowstorm or three fast and no big thaws until April to pile up enough points needed to push it to severe. Pretty safe bet to declare it a mild winter at this stage, and that's a good thing after last year.

February can and is typically a very cold month. They are predicting snow for South Eastern Wisconsin for Saturday night into Sunday. Right now, they are saying 4-8 inches of snow.

A mild start to winter really helps them enter the critical late winter/early spring period until green-up in better shape. Snow isn't counted toward severity points until it's 18 inches high on the ground. It's not a perfect system for measuring severity, but it's a pretty fair gauge most years. One thing that can really throw it off though is a late, cold and snowy spring like we had in '13. Most of the state was counted as mild to moderate for severity, but plenty of deer died that year due to such a long, extended cold and snowy streak in spring. There was still snow/ice on the ground the second week of turkey season in many areas, and probably some remnant snow piles around the third and even fourth weeks up north.

It has been a good winter so far,but we have had almost continuous snow on the ground from early november.Plus cold temps from november, lately it has warmed up,I just hope I do not have to walk into my cabin because of snow for turkey season.Had to last year only second time in 24 years I had to do that.

Been a GOOD winter for cutting buckthorn, prickly ash, wild plum, gooseberry and dead elms. My wife and I have burned 20 brushpiles so far...
