This is one of the reasons I stopped hunting with a certain group for yotes........they went ape crazy when one started running and there wasn't enough ammo in the world for them.
We will be passing this on tonight in HS class.
thoughts and prayers to the family for their loss
Big WOODS - if your bullet lands on someone else's property , is that tresspassing ?
Had a bullet wizz thur the trees about 5 feet over my head about 10 years ago . Scary stuff .
Sincere regards to him and his family .
A lot of questions were asked and unfortunately no one had the answers.
Sad that something like this happens.
To say this was not an accident is almost as wrong as the death. Doubt there was intent to kill the man. I agree all should know the target and beyond. But, we do not know the details of this yet. Was it purely an accident, or was there a complete lack of regard for safety?
What is a safe distance beyond your target? Is it the distance that weapon being used is capable of propelling the projectile? How many people pull the trigger every year on an animal. Not knowing what is 1/4, 1/2, or a mile away. I understand that a .22 round can travel 1.5 miles. Would guess higher caliber rounds could go further. So what then becomes a safe distance. How many know what is a mile beyond the target? How many have 10,20, 30, even 100 acre parcels of land they hunt on. Do you know what, or who is in the 40 next to you? If you pull thew trigger on your 40, and the bullet hits someone or something a 80 away. Are you in the wrong for pulling the trigger?
Right here I have a perfect example every year. 10-20 guys hunt an 80 away from my house every year. Several will even sit in stands on the property line facing my house. Shooting into a private 40. Directly across that 40 is my neighbors home. Offset slightly and another 100yds is my place. I can see quite easily, a bullet hitting my neighbors house or family. Possible for mine or several other houses as well.
Gun/weapon safety of course is a priority here. Far too many close calls, and 1 bullet taken from a .22yrs ago in the knee. Many times have had shot rain down on me while duck hunting the more crowded public marshes. It's all scary stuff.
So where is the line drawn. Is one to say, if there is a person/property within a mile you should not shoot?
Here I hate when people want to use a rifle coyote hunting. Just no place for it to be effective. The danger level to other hunters is much higher. No need for it!!
While driving past our lease I saw the neighbors putting on a drive towards our place. One of the standers was on their side of the fence facing up towards theirs. No issue there. I stopped on the road just to see if they chased anything up. The drive was almost over and the drivers were only 30 yards or so from the stander when a little 6pt jumped up from his hiding spot right on the fenceline and ran over the field on OUR side of the fence. The stander swings around with his rifle and starts shooting. He gets three shots off as it runs between him and our landowners HOUSES AND BUILDINGS!!! It barely makes it over the field and dies. I immediately go to the landowner and tell them to call the sheriff. Needless to say it gets heated when the deputy arrives, I'm outnumbered 5 to 1 and they start laying into me for harassing THEM. "You're just jealous because he got a buck and you didn't." (I had gotten my first P&Y during the bow hunt so I had no interest in shooting a little 6pt with my gun.) "I am very safe and don't shoot when I see blaze orange in my scope." (That's comforting. Are we all supposed to paint our houses blaze orange now!?!?!) "You saw me sitting there why didn't you come tell me I couldn't shoot over onto your property before I started shooting?" (Because you weren't doing anything wrong and it ISN'T MY JOB TO GO AROUND AND EDUCATE EVERYONE ON THE PROPERTY LINES.)
In the end, the worthless county DA refused to even give the poor soul a ticket because he as such a "nice guy" the land wasn't posted. (Even though IT WAS posted and it was CROPLAND which, even under the old statutes in force at the time, it DIDN'T NEED TO BE POSTED.)
