new state record turkey

Last year, Robert Ulickey, of West Bend, arrowed a new state record gobbler. Until now, only his friends and family knew about the accomplishment. The gobbler Ulickey shot had five beards, weighed 20.375 pounds, and had spurs that measured 1.50 and 1.375 inches. The total score was 125.625.
The longest beard measured 10.5 inches, and the total length for all beards was 38.25 inches.
Hunting near the Two Rivers nuke plant?
Did he shoot it 1st season? The 5 beards is cool but there's toms shot in our valley every yr that are 25+ lbs. I expect heavy birds this yr considering the easy winter.
Beards really help pile on the points. Beard point total is double the inches! Pounds is straight up, as in 20 pounds = 20 points. Spurs are x 10. You could have a rare 30-pound turkey with a 10-inch beard and two inch-long spurs and it'd only score 70 points, or 55+ less than this 20-pounder. But, multiple beards are cool. Doubles fairly common, and now and then you see a triple. Did photograph a 5- or 6-bearded freak many years ago, and I bet that one scored 130+ (though shot with gun) as it had multiple long beards, the second-longest hooks I've ever seen (between 1-1/2 and 1-7/8 inches) and was a big bird, though I can't recall the weight. It did make the local paper in the 90s so if I can ever remember his name, I can look it up!
Weight doesn't add much to the score.
No "typical" versus "non -typical" categories? LOL!
Very cool bird and even better that it was taken with a bow.
That's actually a good idea Mike. Single-bearded birds should be "typical" and multiple-bearded "non-typical." I don't follow it at all, maybe they already have categories for best score for one beard, two beards, three beards, etc. Do recall one year a guy shot one between 35-40 pounds, only to find out it was a domestic escapee, lol. It'd take a big "crock pot" for that bad boy!
Bet it won't be long before Antler Whore will be making some stupid *ss comment on this as well.
This is cool! I would love to shoot a turkey that rare ! I would settle for a double beard or a 25# plus .... last year when I arrowed a bearded hen I checked into the state records to just see and there is some nice birds shot!!! Just Google longest turkey bird shot you will be amazed
Naz, it does seem that would be an easy way to differentiate. Otherwise, the scoring system seems to place a high percentage of score on the beard. Often times a turkey beard wears down, depending on the type of foliage the turkey inhabits.
No matter to me, I think multiple beards are cool (at least on turkeys) as are long spurs and overall weight.
Yes there is A typical and Typical catagories for registering your bird.
NIce bird but seriously who cares? Does anyone really keep track of a turkey's "score"?
I certainly would... that would be awesome! To each there own

Plenty of turkey hunters keep track of their scores, just like deer hunters know inches of antler.
The NWTF system definitely has different categories for typical (one beard and two spurs) and atypical (more than one beard or more than two spurs).
Good luck to all turkey hunters this year. There was lots of good strutting and gobbling activity last weekend in southern Wisconsin.
Trapper Jack how is your comment any different??
Congrats on the new record, cool bird.
You mean someone came up with a scoring system for turkeys? Oh brother.
Pretty sure the majority of turkey hunters do not care or look into their turkey "score". Reading this blog got me thinking about the 29 pounder I shot 2 years ago with a 12 inch beard and 1 3/8 in spurs (actually one was over 1 3/8 inch. I looked it up on NWTF and it would rank #10 all time in Illinois with any weapon. This is proof that 99% of turkeys do not get entered as I am positive thousands have been shot with higher scores than mine. Either way, in one week from today I will be on cloud 9 if I can call one in for my dad and one for myself! Good luck to the Wisconsin hunters!
