On Thursday the Michigan DNR announced that there would be no doe hunting allowed for archers in the UP. They cite low numbers from two previous hard winters. Then deep snow early this past winter followed by extreme cold in February as the reasons.
Three units will have some doe tags allocated for use on private lands.
Pretty much mirrors what is happening in northern Wisconsin.

Funny not even a whisper about wolves in the UP. All you have to do is look on YouTube. Good decision though.

why is it a good decision, last year the bowhunters took 2 percent, they are just going to allow the gun hunters to kill them......
no does should mean no does..... period

Great decision in Michigan. With increased technology and pressure.... such as crossbows, inlines, cameras, predation and special seasons, hunters have to be willing to give up opportunity.
Nobody has to hunt deer every year, let alone kill one. Time to get rid of the serial deer killer mentality. Give the resource a break, increase opportunity when and if numbers rebound. BE RESPONSIBLE!

razor, I was under the impression it is extended to the gun season. If not, you are absolutely correct. It should be no does period! The one caveat I noticed was for private land owners in specific zones getting a pass. Politics, politics!

Not necessarily politics the lower eastern part of UP is far different in weather and habitat including farmland the herd dynamics are far different than the other 85% of the UP. Thus different management criteria.

I was thinking that gun doe kills were already off the table but not so. There is a difference tho, every archer could shoot a doe without going through a draw. Gun hunters need to draw doe tags. So, maybe they just have not yet announced that the draw will be zero or very limited for gun hunters not in those three zones on private land.
The link is to the Michigan bowsite thread that is basically this same subject.

I just checked, and I stand corrected.... the only limited doe hunting is in the farmland area of Menomonee and Dickinson Co........
