Well Folks, it's that time of year again. TIme to start making plans for the 5C Doe Hunt.

Dates for this year's hunt are Sept. 24-26 (thurs, fri, sat)

It will continue to be a DOE ONLY hunt, even though technically, bucks will be open by PGC in 5C this year.

The event started as a DOE ONLY hunt, with it's primary goal being to help the local landowners with their deer problems.

Our base of operations will be the Kutztown Family Campground.

We will have Pizza on Friday nite and a Pig Roast on Saturday nite.

PM me for more info and to pre-register for the hunt.

The 5C Hunt was all the buzz at the campout this past weekend. Not only from a lot of the regular attendees, but quit a few new entries as well. Although tags are down somewhat this year, deer numbers have never been higher in a lot of the suburban areas and farms I have been scouting. This should again prove to be a great year for the event.

06-Aug-15
Going to miss this one - I'll be away. I'm sure everyone will have a good time.

RC, I'm getting old too. Amy and I stopped at the new Hooters because we heard they had great cheese steaks. After about 30 minutes she asked me which waitress I'd like to be stuck with in a broken elevator. I never hesitated when I said, "The one who knew how to fix elevators."

Perry,

Sent you an email, buddy! I'm happy to report that Dad and I will be back for the 5C Doe Hunt this year...and we're bringing two additional serious doe slayers with us, too! Can't wait to see you all there!

BTW...Who has my Big Momma Trophy? ;-)

From: Rut Nut
17-Aug-15
Swiggy- we hope we NEVER have to cap the number of participants! We have been fortunate that every year we have gained new properties to compensate for the increased participation each year(by hunters).

Josh- glad to hear it! We look forward to seeing your crew in camp this year. Joe has the Big Momma ready to go for the next lucky recipient! ;-)

Just a reminder guys- Doe Tags for 5C are going fast. There were 20,000+ on Monday when they went OVER THE COUNTER. Just checked at noon today and there were 10,058. So DO NOT WAIT if you do not have a 5C tag! Go to the closest county treasurer and get one TODAY. They will most likely be gone by Friday.

26-Aug-15
At 3:50 on Wednesday 5C is down to 8,962. Stopped in today and got a couple. They told me that they've sold out the last two years.

From: Rut Nut
26-Aug-15
8870 now.

Phil- the last couple years they didn't sell out until after the 5C hunt. This year they cut the tags substantially and will probably be gone by the end of the week!

As we have done in the past, we are going to be doing some demonstrations during the mid day, between hunts on Friday and Saturday.

So far for Friday, Dan Smoker has agreed to do a treestand safety demonstration with both climbers and ladder stands. He will cover all points of safety including harnesses, climbing ropes, full attachment and much more.

For Saturday, Bob MacArthur is working on putting together something special. If we can get clearance from the campground, I'll let him talk about it

Hope you guys and gals are getting plenty of practice in, as we are officially less than a month away! Looking forward to sharing a hunting campfire with old friend again.

From: Teeton
26-Aug-15
I'd like to make it, but have to see if things work out. The next 2 Saturdays will tell. Also I tried to find someone from up this way to go and have not so far.

Now I'm wondering if I should send in for my tag anyway as they are running out.

This is the first year I will not be hunting elk in this time frame since you have been doing this hunt. . Ed

From: Rut Nut
27-Aug-15
I would not wait, or send in for a tag! 8500 now. They will likely be gone by the time your app makes it to the treasurer's office.

27-Aug-15
Heading to the county treasurer's office after work! Hopefully they still have some available. I would've never thought 5C would sell out this quickly. Thanks for the heads up, Perry!

From: Teeton
27-Aug-15
Ok going to get a envelope for a doe tag today. If I can't make it I can't, but I think I will be able. I always wanted to go. You all sound like ur having a lot of fun.. Would like to find someone to split the camp ground cost for the RV with so I'll make a few calls tonight and see if I can find a taker.

Any body from up around the Scranton area that wants to go send me a pm. If all works out I leave on Wednesday night come back Sunday morning. Ed

From: Rut Nut
27-Aug-15
Ed- it's a LOT of fun! If you can't find somebody to bunk with you in your RV let me know. I would gladly upgrade from my tent! ;-)

Josh- I think what is happening is with 25,000 fewer tags(down to 70,000 from 95,000 last year) guys that either wait to buy their tags til later, or buy a few now and wait til later in the season to get the rest are buying all the tags right away. Remember there is no limit- so guys can buy 6,8 or 10 tags over the counter now. THink folks are getting nervous and things are just snowballing.

From: Teeton
28-Aug-15
Ok I had to send them,(doe tags) I did it yesterday. Now just hope they don't run out before they open/get my apps. 6008 left as of 10:18 this morning.. I think they will get them today, as I do mailing all the time and most times in county mail gets delivered next day. I Hope!!! Perry, I'll get back to you as soon as I know if I got them. I'll check at end of day... Ed

We're going to have something really cool at the hunt on Saturday afternoon around lunch time. Diana Olds, founder of Chelee Warriors Mounted Archery is going to give a demonstration. But I would like to know how many of u on here (bowsite) are going and on what days you all go. I'm planning on getting there Wednesday 7-8 pm and leave Sunday.. Tee, show up Wed. and you can help us set up camp. According to Gary, there will actually be a fourth tent set up for our expanded dining and hang out area.

This year, we are going to do some extensive video work on the event to include setting up camp, filming some of the hunts, activities around camp, mentoring and all of the other things that have become part of this event. We would like to put together a production to use at other events throughout the year to showcase the UBP.

Time is drawing near, and final preparations are being made. We continue to visit landowners and check out new prospect properties for the hunt. As I stated earlier, there is no shortage of deer down here and we would love to take a record number of does to help these farmers and private landowners with that problem. I hope you guys are practicing and checking your equipment. Remember, safety harnesses are required to hunt all properties and your UBP membership, up to date.

I've been told of a low covered bridge down past the archery shop which a travel trailer will not clear height wise. Is this true? I seen on the map that I can turn before the archery shop then make the next left.

From: Rut Nut
11-Sep-15
As a matter of fact....................yes. Forgot about that. Yes, take the first right before Weaknecht's Archery then the next left. You will come out at a stone bridge over the creek that runs thru camp. Then take another left on Saucony Rd. and come up to the main entrance to the Campground. You will see the campground as soon as you cross the stone bridge.

ATTENTION: I was just made aware that there is a mistake on the UBP website! There is a link to the OTHER campground on Saucony Rd. at 1583 which is called the Saucony Family Campground. That is NOT the campground for this event! We will be at the KUTZTOWN Family Campground at 1131 Saucony Rd.

We just found out that there were a few people that called the other campground and may have even made reservations.

Just want to make sure everyone knows we will be at 1131 Saucony Rd!

Cactusjumper and anyone who does not have a 5C doe tag: You are still more than welcome to come out and join us! Bear season is open during this time and you can buy a bear tag "over the counter" so to speak. Although obviously not as plentiful as deer, there are probably more bear in 5C than most people realize. And a couple years ago one of our hunters got a "beauty"!

Yes. I hunt there quite a bit since it's so close to me. It's mostly fields and the propagation area draws deer like a magnet but if you get in the right spot you may connect. Most of the woods are areas where deer pass through, not really hang out in, but there are some places where patience may pay off. I attached a copy of the map marked with three Xs where I would suggest. It's a lot different in there with all the leaves on the trees. I like it better later in the season.

I've called the camp ground a few times and I'm thinking that they are closed, but open up for us for the hunt. (well I'm guess that)....

Does anyone know for sure if the camp ground has water sewer and electric hookups for rv's and will they be on for the hunt???

Camp fire wood,, is it a ubp camp fire each night or do we each build a camp fire at our own camp site? Should I bring fire wood for my own camp fire??

Ed- Woody the owner is out of town. Probably why you can't get anybody. Guessing the caretaker is not in the building as much in his absence.

There is limited electric/water and NO sewer hook up. That's why it is first come, first served. But we are telling everyone if you can "share" hookups that would be nice. Just depends how many RV's we get. Never been a problem in the past. There are also a few more hookups behind Woody's house that can be used. You just wouldn't be over on the grass where the big tent is located.

There are also restrooms with shower.

yes on the Firewood. Most of us sit around the fire outside the big tent, but there should be some available for "private" fires.

The SGL can be hunted right? You can hunt bucks there.

Dale- This is the UBP 5C DOE hunt! We have plenty of farms with deer damage. The priority is to help the farmers with their deer problems. We are encouraging everyone to focus on our private properties and only hunt the SGL as a last resort in case people get in late and can't make the necessary arrangements to hunt one of these properties. We have gotten permission on most of these properties because we are taking ANTLERLESS deer, and not focusing on bucks. We would like to keep it that way. ;-)

We expect to again have a lot more properties than we have hunters. So we need to put the focus there(on private property), and not on bucks on the SGL. Hopefully everyone understands.

Im going for the UBP PA Doe hunt Triple this year! Doe, Bear and a groundhog! Who needs bucks? Can't eat the horns. Once i complete the UBP PA Doe hunt Triple i will share some groundhog back straps with the camp...haha!

15-Sep-15
Just to clarify my last post. I don't want to mislead anyone. I hunt the SGL because it's close to home, not because it's good hunting. It's much better pheasant hunting than deer. If I had other choices close by I wouldn't hunt there. In fact this year, since my wife's health issues are better, I'm heading back to Bedford County to hunt.

Anyone that has a chance to hunt private property for a doe will have a much better hunt. I couldn't see any last resort that would make hunting the SGL worthwhile for this weekend. Having permission on all the other properties is the best choice by far.

From: Rut Nut
16-Sep-15
Don't bring either. Just bring a hose to hook up to fill your tank once you get there. We'll use headlamps in the morning. If you need "juice" to charge something we will have a "strip" to plug into in the BIG TENT. Also 42 cup coffee maker (for everybody) and propane stove if you need something heated.

Well if I can't bring a generator I may as well not attend. Don't run it all the time, just a couple hours a day to charge the trailer battery.

We will most likely be running a generator during the day to keep the portable cooler refrigerated. If you bring a long enough extension, you could tap off of that?

Depends where you set up Roy. But I think 100 ft. would do it. We will also have a strip of outlets in the Big Tent. But the generator will be right outside the tent, so would probably be the same distance.

Yeti- LOL! Our local weather guy was wrong all winter! And that was only 2-3 days out. 10 days? I wouldn't hold too much stock! The temperature trend looks real good though- hope it holds!

Guys- we are hearing from the folks at HSH that they really need more deer shot! They were very appreciative of the monetary donation we made last year, but they stressed how much they REALLY need deer right now! Lots of folks hitting the food banks this year. I know someone that works at one and he said the last few weeks there has been a big increase in people coming in.

So PLEASE consider taking the first legal antlerless deer that walks in front of you this year..................and DONATE it to HSH. That's what I intend to do.

From: RC
17-Sep-15
Ok Perry, I"ll donate mine too if I get lucky...

From: Rut Nut
17-Sep-15
Thanks RC!

BTW, we will have a portable cooler on site and will make arrangements for any deer shot to be taken to the local HSH butcher. All you have to do is field-dress and bring into camp. After it is weighed we can put it in the cooler until it can be taken to the processor. Hopefully we will have a bunch we can deliver each day.

From: BOWJO

Would be really great if we could do a substantial meat donation this year. Might even entice me to hit the tree stand a few evenings.

We are already doing a good service for the landowners; now we can help the community as well!

From: RC
18-Sep-15
With the over populated deer herd in the SE, wouldn't it be nice if the PGC would issue special doe tags for the sole purpose of helping out the food bank!!

From: Bob McArthur
18-Sep-15
That's one hell of an idea Roy.

18-Sep-15
Reducing the tags for the SRA's was the first step in herd reduction, didn't you hear?

The tag numbers should have increased, moving the boundaries hurt the old 5C WMU.

Hunters sharing the harvest is a great program and I donate plenty every year. $15 bucks and a tax write off is nice, but knowing we are doing our part to feed the down and out, priceless. Besides, does a person who is hungry really care if it is venison?

From: Yetihunter1
18-Sep-15
Heck, by donating to HSH we are providing gourmet meals for people. Last time i had Venison at a restaurant they charged me like $30 for the plate haha. And it so much better than fast food.

P.S. We get to hunt tomorrow in the SRAs! Practice for the Camp Wack a Doe!

Yes Bob my company laid off a bunch next week.... 1 week layoff. We've been having departmental layoffs- 1 week long for over a year. So it was a possibility to get laid off for a week, collect max UEC with good sub pay, plus we were coming wed eve or Thursday to the hunt..... MJ took 2 days vacation.

This week I started at 5 am to 1 pm. I came in THIS AM and saw the layoff sheet that had me switching shifts to a different department for 35% less pay...... I'd made more on UE.......

The layoff sheet was to be up by Thursday at noon, if I wanted to change it I had to do so by noon........ I leave at 1pm Thursday thinking I'm laid off "out the door". The sheet wasn't posted until late afternoon after I was home. Too late:(

Remember to bring all your stuff guys! Treestands, safety harnesses, BOWS (LOL ;-), TAGS etc........

Last year I brought all my hunting clothes and forgot my "casual" clothes. Had to borrow socks, shorts, t-shirts from everybody. You'd think after 8 yrs I would have the routine down! LOL!
