Spot and stalk 2015 Antelope.
2015 2ND day of the season!
Got within 50 yards, bugled, and he came charging in to 15 yards. I held at full draw while he raked a tree and waited for him to take 2 steps for a shot, and just as he took the second step...thwap! Hunting partner shot him from 30 yards to my left. Finally- we put it all together and it worked. Wish I would've had a go-pro.
Came into bugling from my hunting partner. 25 yard shot. 9/14
1st day, called him in to 10 yards, and decoys sealed the deal!
345 gross!!
Last day of a 12 day hunt..over all it was a good season and was into elk almost every day. Muffed a shot last week on a real porker and had a raghorn at 15 yards but the wind gave me up. This bull was feeding in a small park with two othe r bulls and I managed to put the sneek on them.Real happy with this bull.
You guys are putting down some great bulls!
Congrats!
Shot my first elk this past week. In the Bitterroot.
Was sitting for a bit making cow calls and intermittent bugles. After 30-40 mins. this guy bugled way down the ridge. Sat a while longer as he never responded back to our calls. Then as we were about to leave he bugled again a little closer. We tried to close the gap and we went past him....so we dropped lower, backtracked and kept closing the yardage until I felt I couldn't go anymore. Saw tines coming through the timber and held tight. Buddy was calling up the hill from us and the bull bugled at him and charged up the hill. I stopped him at 25 yards, wide open, very slightly quartering to and blew my arrow through him. He spun, stood for a few seconds and did the death march 40 yards downhill and collapsed. Couldn't be happier.
A little archery whitetail with Maddeerhunter...
Beautiful whitetail............one of the nicer bow kills I've seen posted here for awhile.
Good work to bow kill a bull in the Bitterroots too! They're hard to come by.
looks like that guy behind you is in the rut.
Dr. Bob: No, if it was elk I would be worried....;)
Last Saturday I took my most memorable trophy to date. Not because of its score but because of who was at my side. My 7 year old son, Lance. He has accompanied me on whitetail hunts on the river bottom for the last couple years and this year he insisted he wanted to be with me on an elk hunt. The country I hunt is rugged and heavily pressured and an elk doesn't come easy. But perserverance paid off on our 5th day afield together. I hunted some alone but he said I could only harvest a bull we named Lucky 7. I passed as required several lesser bulls on my solo days anxiously awaiting our next weekend to hunt together. I located the herd during the night as my son slept peacefully at camp. At daylight we made the mile walk to ridge overlooking the herd.
We eventually worked close to the herd in their usually bedding location. Being mindful of the wind and with the stench of elk filling our nostrils, we waited patiently for things to develope. Spotting a cow approaching I motioned to my son and his eyes widened. I whispered to him, "should we take her?" His reply, "shoot her no matter what!" With that my HUNTER kill switch was flipped on and moments later my arrow found its mark.
We tracked, recovered and quartered our quarry together while I answered the many questions of a curious 7 year old mind. One of the best days of my life....
I have a hunting partner now for as long as my legs will still carry me on the mountain... pass it on..
The pack out.. Special thanks to my friends who graciously gave up a day of their own hunting time to help us pack out the remaining 3 quarters ..
August 16th. Spot and stalk...
August 16th. Spot and stalk...
Awesome Svrelk. Great to see kids in the woods!
Great story, svrelk, and congrats on the new hunting buddy!
Cow shot on 9/20. 40 yard shot, 80 yard recovery
I was lucky enough to take my first ever elk last Sunday morning. It was the first morning of the hunt, but I was not planning on being picky for my first elk. DIY on public land with three great friends. The story of how it came to be was rather simple. I set up on a ridge that I'd seen a few animals pass by on earlier in the morning. He came straight in and veered off right at the last. The shot distance was about 30 yards. I used a Magnus broadhead and was happy with the results!
I've struggled to get it done here in MT other than cows (for myself, wife, and son) since moving here from CO in 2011. Shot this bull at 7:30 this morning. The tracking job is a long story, and was more stress than I hope to deal with while tracking again. I found him dead in his bed between 1:30 and 2 after jumping him and his running mate around noon and backing out. He hadn't been dead more than 30 minutes.
Sw MT wilderness hunt in the snow. 25 yard shot, 15 yard recovery. Frontal shot, he didn't know what happened, he died so fast.
svrelk that's the best hunting story/post & pics I've seen in years, congrats to you and your boy, amazing!!
September 19th was a good day in Southwest Montana.
10/17 Spot and Stalk. 40 yard shot and 100 yard recovery with a QAD Exodus head.
Well the second to last day of archery season and finally got it done...locate and cut him off on a game trail. 13 yards quartering to. Tucked the arrow right in front of the near shoulder and it came out behind the offside shoulder. Went 80 yards. At close range, I'd take the shot again...
September 21 2015 was a great day!
August 15th spot and stalk...........my oldest son was able to watch and help pack out
September 11.......last day of my elk hunt
November 3rd.........Bitterroot buck, coyotes chased him and two others right past me at 30 yards.......One of the coyotes tried to eat my deer and I snuck up to 20 yards of him standing on my deer and let him live since he helped me.......not sure why I did that?
November 14th. Made another memory with my son Lance! After several unproductive sits in the blind this fall a buck finally followed the script.., although deer of this age typically get a pass from me I just can't deny that look on his face. He was a giant to him...I couldn't have been happier... and I still have another tag in my pocket... Pass it on.
13 yards.. Heart shot... Fell within sight..
svrelk: You made my day! Congrats!
Svrelk, congrats and way to get the kids out!!!
11/30/15. My hunting partner . We doubled up on the last day . Good times. Hunt
Turkey with one of my homemade self-bows.......48 pound hawthorne/sinew combo at 12 yards.....
