After heading out west to hunt elk last year, i wanted to go for a "western" experience in NY this year.
I headed to some southern tier state land on the afternoon before the opener, and packed in a mile or 2 - nothing crazy, but i was hoping that anyone coming in the next morning would push any animals up a draw in my direction.
I was camped about 50 yards off a clear cut in a no vehicle area. unfortunately at around 1 AM a herd of ATVs w/ screaming guys and girls came through the area... and then proceeded to drive back and forth through the clear cut until 3 AM.
I realize that spot and stalk for bear is very low probability in NY, but I think my chances went to zero following the ATVs being out all night.
I spent the next day creeping through the woods and hitting a predator call every once in awhile, but never saw a thing other than a squirrel. I spoke with 2 other hunters (gun) and they didn't see anything either, although i did hear a shot.
anyone else have any luck?
