Spent 9 days hunting in central montana. We are owed this nice bull and were so close on another several times ....
What a great trip .... I went in shape and it paid off I was flying up and down the Mountian
We were Into elk everyday but one .... I had a nice 6x6 at 40 that needed 3 more steps and the wind shifted and a good 5x5 at 30 that busted me as I drew ... He got to the spot quicker than we expected ... Last day has a cow at 30 but no shot ..... We had a stalk each day and got to about 49 yards on each elk but they were not buggling much so we ended up getting picked off
This bull was chasing the herd came over the top right where we were setting up .... Bruce and set up on either side of the rock after he buggled waiting and he picked Bruce's side... 40 yard shot and 100 yard recovery
Trip was 13 days .... Day and half to drive each way and 9 hunting
We had the butcher deep freeze and brought back in a good cooler with dry ice ....
My first elk hunt and I am hooked

Congrats!
Where are the knee bones?
Congrats. Beautiful animal and quite an accomplishment. I also hunted MT last week and connected on my first bull. Story to follow when I get back home.
Wow awesome... It's on my bucket list. Great job
Awesome animal!!! Great job!!
That's awesome, congrats. I'd love to do that. How many guys did you go with? Field dress and packed the meet in the field in your bags and hauled it out? Please share details.
There was two of us .... We quartered and packed the meat out .... It was 5 trips .... I bought a alps pack .bruce had an older pack ..... Each trip was a quarter ... One trip was the head (the heaviest).... The last trip was back strap and neck meat ... The pack was about a mile and quarter to the truck ... Down hill we shot him on the top... It was a 40 min hike uphill empty to the spot
We found him at 730 and had him quartered, bagged and capped by 1130 . At the truck by 4
We helped a friend (local guy) pack out a cow. He brought a tarp to work on .he deboned the entire elk on the mountain.. Great idea for next time
I'm hoping to go back in nov but will be alone so I'm looking for an outfitter. This 1000 tag is burning a hole in my pocket
Scott - Great going but now you are screwed because you just can't do one elk hunt. I have been on 5 so far and can't wait to go again!
Congrats! Definitely a lot different from hunting in the northeast!
Gene. I agree .im hooked ... I want to do diy but only have one buddy who elk hunts. I might try a solo next year
That's cool had, I am going to recruit 1-2 friend in the next 2 years to do the same. Thanks for the info!
Wow - Congrats on a blast of a trip!
Congrats dude !!!!....how much meat do you get out of them
240 to 290 pounds of meat
Great photos and awesome kill. Thanks for sharing.
Congrats on great Hunt and and Bull.
jax- you're killing me!! Another beautiful elk and I can't get out west to chase them. Way to go man! I'm thinking Montana is my next trip instead of New Mexico, change things up.
