Kill numbers have to be way up. My local slaughter house was stacking bucks like cord wood this morning. They told me that my partner and my does were the first checked-in all week in a county where does are legal all season on private land. They had already caped 75 deer for mounting when they only caped 25 all last season. Makes me think it was the abundant mast crop and not hemorrhagic disease that was responsible for the low kill last year. What's it like in other parts of the state?

Deer Harvest Preliminary Tele-check Data Shows Increase from 2014

With the firearms deer season entering its third week, preliminary tele-check data shows Virginia hunters are having a good season so far.

VDGIF Deer Project Coordinator, Matt Knox notes that the first weekend (November 14–15) numbers may have been higher if it were not for the high winds which were blowing across the state. Matt worked a CWD check station up in Frederick County and said the wind was blowing hard from sunrise to dusk on Saturday evening. Note this is just the electronic check and is therefore preliminary.

The 2015 October archery was up 2%, early muzzleloading was down 16%, and the opening weekend of firearms was up 32%. We’ll keep you posted throughout the season in TOR.

Update deer harvest data: The week that just ended November 22, was up 40% over last year. The last 10 or so deer hunting days have evidently been very good. Currently up about 6,800 deer over the same time last year.
