I'm new to the forum here and just looking for some new state forest land. I'm not looking to jump in anyone's spot just some helpful ideas. I live out on Billings lake so I'm surrounded by from what I've heard some great hunting spots but it's tricky with all the farm and private land. I've been hunting from my stand in Ledyard on some private property with permission but the land is being donated to the town so my time there is running out. I have a compound bow and any tips would help!
Cool name, welcome aboard..maybe you can get permission from the surrounding properties to cut across their land
There are no empty places in nature as balance is one defining word for what surrounds us.
Like any public land, the deeper you are willing to travel, the more chances you will have. Exploring/scouting takes hard work and time, but it can provide great rewards. You have few months until September 2016. Go in the winter, go in the spring, and go before the season starts to find your spots. After all the work please come back here and post some stories backed by pictures with hopes of renewed determination for the next hunter generation.
Thank you.. I have been scouting out the area since last February and am very familiar with it, the deer have been exceptionally good at alluding the hunters this year and it sucks! I would love to find the land owners to talk to but not sure which direction to start as most people are pretty uptight with their private property. I've heard decent kills are being pulled from Rt 49 area and Rt 138, I'm off Rt 201 and have access through trails but there's still a lot of hikers. I am well set up with my stand in Ledyard and have seen quite a few but no shots close enough yet I'm just trying to fill my tags and freezer and like I said the property I hunt in Ledyard by the end of the month will no longer be legal and it was a surprise so rather than give up I'm asking for advice..
Been there a couple of times it's tough hunting because the pressure that is there as for the bow only area I think it's fairly small but could be a safe haven for the deer not really sure I've only been in other areas.wish I could help more and give u some advice finding private land in this end of the state is very tough believe me I know
Welcome to the site and the bowhunting ranks!
I would seriously talk with your land owner to get the name of the person they are working with on the donation of land to the town. I know some towns allow hunting on these parcels that are donated. It can also be part of the donation deal...that the town allow it to be used for bowhunting. It would definitely be worth the time to see if this is an option....if the property is that good for holding deer.
Great info thanks guys! Saw a big Doe and her fawn out in my stand this morning in Ledyard but nothing for a taker.. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the chat! Keep me in mind if you come across any land that needs to be weeded out close to me lol!
The other option is to hunt private land bordering an area where you're legal to recover a downed animal, even if you can't hunt there. And landowners whose properties abut the unhuntable land just may have HAD IT with the deer anyway!
