I have been hunting quite a bit the last few days. Corn was cut in my bow only area(all but one field)last week. It sucks we can only shoot antlerless late season over there. I won't hunt over there again. I saw a few small bucks and a bunch of does and fawns yesterday. I am bow hunting with the muzzle-loader guys. Gonna hunt Sunday morning and than the last two evenings and see if one of the leftover big guys shows at my late season food plots. Shawn
Good luck tomorrow Shawn..Hope to get kids off to school early Monday and head out for a long sit..see if I cant add one to the freezer..been tough so far..gotta about another week left before shot gun season opens here on the Island..not my thing..Happy Holidays
Still at it here on Long Island but very slow lately. We have town properties open thru February so will keep after it til then. Good Luck Mike!
Thanks Tom ..good luck and happy holidays to you and the guys..hope to have the opportunity to hunt with ya again
Oh yeah. I just love to hunt. Deer present or not. I have Tues off, can't wait!!
Then its time to go after all those squirrels that I watched during bow season!
I actually like squirrel hunting more than deer hunting, but there's a little less meat on 'em.
Still at it On The Island....gonna hunt any free day (only once a week) till 31 January..Merry Christmas To all. Let me get back to huntin. Mad Dog
Nailed a squirrel 2 weeks ago from the treestand...no deer...bored? Squirrel! He's in the freezer...how do u cook them bowshot? MD
Headed out for an all day hunt tomorrow and Tuesday afternoon; then its all done here in 3m. Hoping to put a doe in the freezer. Hope something is still moving about after all the shooting.
Nothing moving during daylight on my properties in Oswego and Allegany counties. They have been hitting the turnips at night but nothing during shooting hours.
MVP, here too. They have been hammering my turnips and sugar beets but all the good bucks at night. I could not hunt today as the wind was 40 mph and I was not safe in any tree I had for this wind. I was gonna grab the muzzle loader but too windy even for that. I will be back at it tomorrow morning and again in the afternoon. Good Luck guys! Shawn
Last run in the morning.....deer on my public ground are not moving far.....tough to get set up. I saw 5 on Sat. and 8 on Sun. all but 3 ea day were running from ML guys. Did see a good buck yesterday.
Was able to sneak out late yesterday afternoon for a quick sit while the wife took the kids Christmas shopping..Most action I saw all season..6 deer total..All does with fawns...better than nothing I guess..tried shooting one of the larger does..Not sure what happened to my bow..released arrow,,heard loud snap and arrow missed by a mile..seems like my arrow rest must have whacked my fletching..had black scuffs on it ? Being fairly new to the sport , thinkin I must have banged on something to throw it off ? Good luck to all still at it..
dead from dark tip 10:00 in 7J. I'll be back at it. Raining like a son of a gun. My expensive "hi tech" rainwear is on total failure mode.
I am heading out in an hour. Gonna sit over a food plot right on top of bedding and see what comes out. have a nice 6 pt. on camera there and he is 3.5 and I don't think he is ever gonna amount to much. If he shows I hope to kill him. Awful warm out! Shawn
Finally saw my first deer of the gun and late bow season. 5 doe running from someone that fired two shots DEFINITELY NOT from a muzz. Sounded like pistol. They were on my brother's property, without permission (I'm the only one allowed there).
NY: infested with idiots, I swear I haven't met ONE hunter in my area that thinks nothing of breaking the game laws. Nope, not one.
I forgot: I killed one with the bow opening day of gun, in 7H. That's all I saw till today (last day, last hour)
Glad you were able to get that one bow shot..as far as Ny idiots..there is no shortage of them in Suffolk County either..I ran into a guy that was hunting on a private lease that I had..His excuse to me was that he has been hunting here for years and I didnt refresh my "no tress pass" signs..what ever..Happy Holidays
hammer, LOL!!, yeah I've encountered some sweet folks like that too. Ding bats!!
SQUIRREL TIME!!!!
And what may I ask do you with all them Squirrels ? My son whats to try some taxidermy work on one..thinks it would make a great"show and tell"for school..may have to try and shwack a few next time out..
Well, I managed to kill that 6 pt. Unfortunately not with the bow, but the Muzzle loader. It was pouring rain so I decided to take the ML. I shot him at 4:05 yesterday standing in one of my food plots. Nice buck that dressed 187#s. We figure at least 3.5 years old and gave him one more year to see what he would become. He was only a tad bigger horn wise this year than last. I just got done skinning and quartering him, way too warm. It was a long season and I hope NY finally shortens the gun season. Shawn
Any pics of the six deerman?
Yeah a lousy one in the dark. I will post it if I can get it to download. Shawn
Hammer, sorry I'm late for class… I ran out of data so I had to cool it.
Anyway, I eat 'em. Good stuff. Unlike just about anything else wild except pheasant, grouse and dove, they taste…just like chicken.
Actually a little different, but not by much, lol! Its very mild. All those beech, hickory, oak and maple nuts.
5-9 in crock till soft. remove from the crock, let 'em cool and take the meat off the bone. Save the broth, it makes great gravy. Use the meat in any way you'd use chicken. My favorite: add butter and hot sauce.
Alternate: cook potatoes, carrots and cut green beans in the broth, and then put the boned meat back in. Season any way you like, it will work.
My Venison sauerbraten was excellent. Gotta bag some more squirrels and cook them the way u said Mr. Bowshot. Thanks Mad Dog
This is the best I could do for a pic. It was dark and I was by myself. Thought of giving him another year but he was 3.5 and no bigger than last year except body wise. Shawn
