Newtown, CT - Deer Season Update for 2015
With the Connecticut deer season nearly finished for 2015, the current harvest numbers for Newtown, CT. are down by approximately 30% from 2014. This year Sunday hunting was allowed; if we take Sunday out of the total, Newtown is down approximately 39% from last year. The 2015 privately funded FLIR showed a population of approximately 689 deer or 11.41 deer per square mile in town; and with fawn recruitment at approximately 25% would give Newtown a population of 861 deer for the fall hunting season. The 2015 harvest now at 176 deer leaves Newtown, CT with approximately 685 deer or 11.34 deer per square mile. With the 2015 January Archery Season unfinished, these numbers will probably change.
Are you guys still saying their was zero deer missed with the flir count? Also, the entire states deer harvest is down which may have to do with acorns and maybe some winter kill.
Yes. Despite VisionAir reporting 25% of deer on the ground, these guys assume those are total counts, 100% detection. If Glen does this for every town in CT this year, I'm sure he will get similar results for every town given moon, weather, acorns, and generally lower deer density.
Spin away doc ! Like the old saying goes.........Over the rail & in the pail !
My self and a couple of friends have a 130 acre piece in Newtown as well as a couple of smaller spots we hunt .on the 130 acre piece at the beginning of the season we where getting over 2000 pics a week between 3 cams . We had roughly 10 bucks and and 6-10 does on the property daily.....then 3rd week of September come and down came the acorns and we were lucky to get 50 pics between all the cams a week. Some deer dispersed and didn't come back. Some would make a occasional appearance. Highly nocturnal. And hunting pressure was very light...... On another note this is the 1st year we have had pics of bears....never had bear pics in Fairfield co before this year
130 Acers when can I go .LOL
One thing is for sure, with the low kill and mild winter all the towns should have a high kill this year.

I hunt Newtown pretty much all year long - my friend and I do crop damage on 140 acres bordered by state forest, nature preserve and about 150 acres of private property where hunting is not allowed.
I have no mature bucks on camera at all this year. A good number of young 8 pointers though.
Rich what did you peg to the tree, marshmallow?

apples - a found a boatload of apples along the street just before opening day of rifle - I place some in the trees to throw out the scent a little better-
One of the other hunters got a bear on camera two years ago- also we had bear sightings this year.
I also had a bear in my yard in Bridgewater
I posted this before but I will link it again - my bear video-
apparently the bear population is increasing significantly here - I wonder why

Newtown FLIR Deer Survey - 2015
My cams showed like jdr's. Could set a watch with deer coming by about every 2h. Late Sept and traffic stopped. Got a few in Nov Dec in the middle of the night. One was being chased by a yote. Finally started getting close to sunrise pics 8 Jan. Will try 1 more time out hoping they are moving more with the cold.
