Venison donation

Being fairly new to bow hunting, I consider myself being lucky enough every year to harvest or at least have the opportunity to harvest my share of deer. The problem I am having is that the venison drop off location near me does not want"small"does.First question I get is "how big is it?".I had brought in one that they had charged me to leave them!? I believe it was $40 ..some donation.."Too small..takes the butcher too long to process"..I was told.Ever since that episode I have been selective on letting that arrow fly.Not wanting to have any of these animals wasted,I passed on numerous "small" does this season.Just wanted to see if this is the"norm'..Good luck to all still at it!

No, they should take any free healthy kill offered! Shawn

Yeah...that would tick me off too..unless they had a minimum size/weight off the bat and told you. M.D

Right... maybe they established that right of the bat. But having cut up probably 100+ deer, I can do a little one much faster than a biggie. But I'm probably not too good at it or something...

I could see the point of small deer ,small amount of meat, but like ya said bow shot, small ones go quicker..My concern was being charged to donate one..Thought that was odd.See what happens next season.Good luck out there..

Donated deer are boned, trimmed and ground. No steaks, chops, stew etc - all ground. Almost no time difference between a small one to a big one.

Sounds like a whistle needs to be blown...
I wonder if the shops that do the donation thing get $ from the state or clubs or something...

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought years ago, that an authorized processor charged you a certain fee...I imagine their usual fee...to drop off your deer for the program. Due to a very few taking "advantage" of this, processors started to get money donated to them by whomever or whatever organizations. So, the way it is, you should be able to drop it off for the donation program at no cost to you. IMO it takes a real benevolent soul to not just give a deer away but, essentially, pay someone to take it.
