next year is going to be great !!!!!!!!!!!!!
got some nice deer for next season...
Never. Passed on a few 6s and some smaller forkies. Had a small 8 early in season but never got a shot given how dense the foliage was. Passed on does too. Theres a large group of does in the area and wanted them to grow up (3 does with 2 fawns each!).
The split brow tine 12 (I think he is a 12, the first two pictures), is the one I am kicking myself over. I was going to hunt that morning (the timestamp is an hour forward, it was actually 6:23 and I think shooting time was 10 mins away anyway...). I would have at least seen him with my eyes if I went instead of bagging the hunt due to family stuff.
Oh Well.
In summary, Tag Soup for me but it was an exciting season and I feel I am well prepared for next season.
Did shoot a yote from the stand which is always a plus.
Last but not least, this guy. He looks very old to me, I doubt he will live many more years. Only showed himself one day on camera during the season. Mid November I believe for a span of 4 hours midday.
He visited this night in late October and did not like the foam target buck at all...
He is still alive this was the 8 we have been after for four years this was him last year Dave saw him about a week ago very smart
Smart, but looks like he just took a beating!
Does make me wonder, though, if the Old Dudes are really all that crafty, or if they just happen to keep unusual hours and that's all it takes?
That said.. I got out real briefly last Thursday night for one last go, and ended up driving away right at sunset. Saw a LOT of deer on the way home in that first 30 minutes past sundown.
Up in MN (and CO & WY) we were always permitted that last half hour, and frankly, on a cloudy day it was too dark well before it got too late. But insofar as the deer adjust to hunting pressure, the biggest difference is that here you can at least see what you're missing out on. At least some of the time.....
Nice Bucks Steve!
I always see deer in the 30 minutes after sunset. They move a lot in my area during that timeframe. But having said that, grunt or rattling 30 minutes before sunset will bring them looking also. Shot a buck last year doing that same thing.
That big split brow buck I posted was well away from bedding, on a travel route. He was freshening that scrape. Does were mostly visiting it.
This year was weird though. With the acorns and warm weather, I didn't see the really big deer much in shooting hours, on camera at least. Besides the one or two odd days they were cruising midday during the rut.
Hoping for a weak acorn crop and some cold early season weather next season.
SWK, I think I have seen a similar article.
My feeling is those big deer are in the thick stuff. You wont catch them cruising the open hardwoods all that much unless they are chasing.
Im going to adjust a bit next season and hang a stand in some THICK swampy area that I know big deer use. I have seen them in the past, antler tines way up above the thickets cruising through, steam from their breathing rising on a cool November morning.
I already have a stand close to bedding area, that's the one I shot a buck out of last season.
that big guy killed us, he would come out about 1/2 after dark this year he was there every day till Sept 10 then didn't show till Jan 4 still never in day light until almost the end of Jan and he ran in front of Dave's truck when he was driving to stand he is a 99% night time deer he came the same day 1 year apart next year we will be waiting for him .lol
That 8 point is a cool looking deer.
I have a few good ones still hanging around also. I agree Steve, it should be exciting next year!
I had a chance at this guy in November and I did execute successfully. I hope I get another chance next season
These are just a few I am keeping tabs on...I can't wait for next year!
And then there are these guys. They keep my batteries charged until next season!
Ha! I call this one ilean.sounds better than lamar
NASCAR Dave.his missing left antler throws off his balance thus forcing him to ver left
This ones ab,ba..what can I say...they're wascley ones I tell you..it seems they have a penchant for slightly faded sunburst yellow certenteed vinyl siding...next year they're mine(insert maniacal laugh)
Lmao not me, damn I hope you don't miss much between the skid and the cinder block lol.
Don't you worry bud,I have my dopey nephew sit behind the skid catching any wayward flyers..hes getting pretty good at it and all it cost me is the crumbs at the bottom of a ruffles salt n Vinegar bag...
Bonehead it looks like those deer are in your house.
Ooooo box o buck.thats cool dude..
I like the Buck-in-the-Box picture.
Steve - looks like you got a great baiting set up there, getting lots of critters! Really cool.
Steve, what feeder set up is that? I've been thinking of getting one like that.
the deer have to hit the ball to make the corn come out the turkey would eat ever bit if they could get it , took them 6 years to jump up and knock out the corn will have to raise it a little bit
