Sucks big time. I hope they catch the criminal and they get what they have coming.

When I watched the video and saw that someone had taken a picture of it alive laying near blood I wondered if it was hit by a car or wounded somehow and someone came by shot it and cut the head off. I understand that it is illegal to do that but that changes the dynamics of it.

How did someone shoot it, someone take a picture of it dying,(and publish the photo) and then someone cut the head off and get away, and they not know who it is? what are the chances that the photographer was not the shooter and the head was gone when they came back....zero.

Read all the comments after the article too.

I wonder if they have given that picture to a tech savvy person to check for metadata that might have the serial number of the camera/phone included in it.

A couple of year ago the winter carnival people in Duluth MN took a picture of the area where a medallion was hidden and posted it on their contest web site. Someone got the gps location from the metadata and quickly found the medallion.

I hope that they find the d-bag.

I gotta say,and I've said it before, I can not understand the people who do this chit. How can they look at that rack in the future?

I would imagine that if I had that rack hanging on the wall, every time I looked at it I'd hear a voice in my head. "You're a loser! You poached this deer, cut it's head off and left the meat to rot! You only did this because you can't hack it! You're a pathetic liar!"

I'm sure that this tool has some dramatic story about his amazing hunt and how he outsmarted this buck in an epic fashion...and no conscience.

I would assume that he's most likely a local though. With people having been watching this buck for a few years, they are probably familiar with the rack. I hope that he shows it to somebody who recognizes it and he gets busted, if not via the cameraman and picture.

D-bag!

This is the reason I understand when landowners don't share deer cam pics or tell anyone what they know is on their land. To many jealous idiots out there. I don't care about the fine but if convicted of poaching, the criminal should never be able to hunt legally in this state again.

The obsession of antlers is why we see this and why we are where we are today. Not many hero shots of guys holding spikes or does.

Here's the deal though. Even if they catch the dirtbag, the fines will not equal the crime.

Swampy you are of the minority on two counts.

!- Agreeing with me.

2- Agreeing about the obsession.

I bet there are a few more that would agree about the antlers but unwilling to admit what it has done to the sport of hunting. Yes it has generated a ton of money but at what cost? We are touching 200 class now. When will that be the norm? I hope never.

Pasq- the majority does not want to go out and shoot a spike that they could shoot any day of the season. More hunters want to feel like they defeated a older, smarter, buck that's been around a few years. Now these guys that poach, I would hang them by their nuts.

RJN - would you still hunt if that's all they grew?? I agree the poachers must pay the price.

60 * 24 = 1440

47,515 / 1440 = 32.9965

your math is good dukes

Is it just me or is there a whole lot of facts that just don't add up here.

The prior picture of it wounded?? wounded when? when was the pic taken?

The DNR knows the exact day it was shot?? and they Know what time of day it was shot??? OH really?

Somebody probably did shoot the deer and whack his head off, which is worthy to be up in arms about.

But what if it was hit by a car or something and someone found the thing dead and whacked his head off. Still wrong I guess but who here hasn't found a nice buck dead from whatever cause in spring when its just a pile of bones and the skull and took it along. Just cause its a clean skull does it make it any less wrong? A found dead deer is a found dead deer regardless if its 1 day old or 1 year old.

Again, It probably was poached but it sure is a pee poor job of presenting the facts by the media is all im saying.

Pasq- yes I would because shooting a mature doe is more of a challege than shooting a young dumb buck and I love venison.

Legally in many states a skull and rack with the meat rotted away or eaten by critters versus a fresh kill of any kind are quite different. Not sure where Wisconsin is on that difference but pretty sure it is not legal to cut the rack off of a fresh road kill without a road kill tag or call in tag number.

I am guessing they know the date and time because there are date/time stamps in those pictures or others from trail cams that are being held back as evidence.

I came across a nice buck laying by the side of a road one morning on the way to work. The only way I knew it was there is because a coyote was standing over it and it's eyes glowed.. I assume it had been hit by a vehicle. The rack was wider than the ears and it looked like a 8 or 10 but way wider than the ears and a nice buck. I saw the yote and slowed down, pulling into it with my headlights. My wife who was riding with me asked why I chased it off and I said I hate yotes getting a free meal. I came home from work the same way and found the buck with its horns cut off and half the hind end off. Someone had taken the time to cut the horns off. I wonder if they are displaying proudly...

I found a buck still alive in the ditch that was hit by a milk truck. I knew this buck as I had seen him multiple times in the field I had been hunting. I called the police and came with a warden. After the policeman shot the buck, they said I could have the deer. I put the rack on a plaque and it's on my wall. I always explain it was a road kill and it was a shame a hunter was not able to harvest him.

For some reason (unexplained) Pasq feels the need to push his view of hunting on all.

Any poached deer is a crime, regardless of antlers or not.

We have gotten to where we are today because of the ability for anyone to go out and film a hunt and sell it. Antlers sell, just like sex sells = Antler Porn.

We all look at deer hunting differently and that's a good thing.

This was not hunting, it was a criminal act. Plain and simple.

I had a deer get hit by a car and end up in my front yard. It was a decent buck. After the deputy put the deer down he asked if I wanted it. I said no, I don't need the memory of what happened to the deer coming back every time I look at the antlers.

If you want to put the rack on the wall, great. It's not for me.

If all bucks grew were spike or forked antlers, yes I would still hunt. I would take more time to field judge age by body and still pass the young ones. Don't get me wrong though I love a big rack as much as the next guy and when I daydream about bowhunting the bucks in my head usually have more horn than a spike or fork.

As far as cutting the antlers off a roadkill, I keep telling myself to throw a saw in my truck in the fall so I can get a pair of rattling antlers. I've never found a shed and I still use the rattle bag. I can't see myself displaying roadkill antlers on my wall though.

Crusader- I felt like I needed to do something with the buck I found since I had alot of history with him and he was a good buck (12 1/2" tines). I think it's a shame when guys throw racks in the corner of the garage and forget about them. Every buck I've ever shot is on my wall either plaque, European, or head mounted.

Nothing wrong with taking antlers off a found buck, as long as it is legal.

CaptMike + 1...I have found a few large racks and sheds in my time, had the racks legally tagged from the DNR ($10.00) and either honored them on a plaque or a antler lamp.

The buck was shot out of season by a group of people that were after coyote's. I won't degrade hunter's by calling these people hunter's because that is not what they are. They have no regard for rules or regulations and are just plain selfish. They did have permission to be on the private land because of the need/want by owners to control the preditor population but this incident has shut this property and many other local properties down to actual hunter's. The picture of the buck wounded was taken by a local who notified law enforcement and the head was removed before law enforcement was able to respond. The Wisconsin DNR is investigating and hopefully for the landowners and all true hunter's the person or people who did this will get what they have coming. This was a true buck of a lifetime for most hunter's and the locals that knew of the buck were trying to take it legally.

RJS, and that is the shame of it. Even though you don't call them hunters, the media and others will. They just give hunters and hunting a bad name. The type of notoriety we certainly do not need. I too hope they get punished to the maximum extent the laws allows for.

I encourage hunters to claim car killed deer. I filled my freezer with 2. It allowed me to wait for a nice deer since I had meat.

I have picked up a few road kills over the years. One thing I learned is to look them over real good before you decide to take one home. Some of them literally have crap blown up between the layers of meat. They can basically explode from the inside out with little obvious damage on the outside. I quit even thinking about picking any up after that. Has anyone else experienced that kind of a mess?

Jeff. My neighbor hit one in front my house, so I took it, after skinning it out, it was black and blue up and down both sides, was a mess, Nothing there I wanted to eat. He hit it with his truck with attached snowplow. Must have been at a good speed to smash it on to the pavement to bruise up that side so bad.

What a turd. I'm currently in Cable and while riding a bike with wife we came across a home with 5 or 6 bird feeders and a beaten down trail from the woods to them. Must be ostrich feeding. We did find a doe with fawn no higher than the knee on edge of road. Pretty cool to see.
