Anyone fish out of kayaks? I've been thinking about getting one to fish out of and spend some time with the family. I'm in the 300lb range so I may be better off getting a jon boat. If you all have any tips or suggestions please share them.

We have several of the wilderness tarpons and I have the rider 115 - very stable and easy to maneuver . Little pricey though but I felt it was worth it.

Thanks JD. The ones I have been looking at have been in the $500-$800 range. I've seen cheaper ones but I'm afraid of getting a piece of junk. I want stable and comfortable. Thanks again.

Forgot to mention the 115 rider is one that you can stand in. Plus the seating system is very comfortable...

I tried it and couldn't deal with the lack of being able to move around much. Also, I didn't like sitting flat with my legs out in front of me basically right on the water level. The one I had was an Old Town that was designed for fishing. My suggestion is that you try before you sink money into one. I didn't and took a bath (pardon the pun) on it when I sold it. I would much rather have a jon boat--but that's just my opinion. Some guys dig it....but like I said, try it first as there is a learning curve. Heck getting in and out of the thing was challenging. :o) Now if I had tried the one JayD mentioned and could stand up in it, I may have had a very different impression.

I've been doing it for a few years now and there is no other way to fish rivers IMO. I bought a Jackson Coosa a few years ago after looking and experimenting with many others, and I'm very glad I didn't buy early. If you plan to use it much and want to be comfortable, just bite the bullet and spend the money on a dependable/ comfortable boat. The new "sit-on-top" style boats are easily maneuverable and fairly stable but most of all was the comfort of the Jackson that got me. I've spent 8-10 hours a day in mine on weekend fishing trips on the new and greenbrier rivers and have never had an issue. Sure you may "take a bath" but you are fishing out of a kayak........I never go fishing without thinking that I may get wet. Don't want too but it's going to happen, trust me. I had a buddy that went through several boats (lower end models) trying to find something comfortable and he finally spent the money last summer and bought a "feel free lure". Like I said if you plan to do it much, spend the money....I don't think you could go wrong with a Jackson or a Feel Free. Best of luck....JC

God bless ya,

I may do that. I found a company out of Georgia that sells a nice kayak. They are called Eddy Gear. Anyone ever heard of them. Also Ron the family all have their own kayaks. I own 4 already none of them "Man" size. I've lost quite a bit of weight, I'm down 71lbs since March. My goal is to be at 300lbs by June 25th, 36lbs to go. Gonna be tough but I can do it.
