It's that time of year again folks! (less than 3 months away)
This year we are proud to say we are partnering with Hunter's Sharing the Harvest to make this an official HSH event. As such, we will now be donating ALL deer to the HSH program. A lot of folks in the local communities will be benefiting from the donation of ground venison to local food banks!
Some of you may have seen the article in the Morning Call. If you didn't, click on the link.
Dates this year are Sept. 22-24 Our home base will again be the Kutztown Campground. We will have Pizza nite on Friday and Pig Roast on Sat.
Also, there will be a mandatory proficiency test. 3 arrows in a 9" pie plate at 20y is passing.
Hope to see you all there!
I should mention there is a $20 fee for registration for the hunt with part of the proceeds to go to HSH and part to the "Big Momma" awards. (3 awards for the heaviest does)
Also a modest fee for camping and for the Pizza and Pig Roast.
You will again be able to set up camp after noon on Wed. and may camp right thru to Sunday.
Flush toilets and showers are available. Tents and a limited number of trailer sites.
Coffee again will be provided in the mornings.
Dang, don't know where that pic came from- not even any of our members! ;-)
Hunting is on private properties that we have acquired over the years in and around the Lehigh Valley(WMU 5C)
Anyone new to the site or not familiar with the event, this is a UBP event, open to all current members of the United Bowhunters of Pa. Memberships will also be available in camp, as will UBP merchendise.
This has become a "must attend event" for many over the years, as there are few places you can enjoy camping, bowhunting and a pig roast feast, all in one weekend with some of the best people you will meet in the Pa. outdoors.
We always welcome our brothers from Western pa. who make the long trip to join us for the hunt. We welcome new friends to come out and experience this, and bring their families along, as we continue to grow the event.
Thanks for the clarification Joe.
It started as just a few of us getting together to hunt for the day in 5C and get a jump on the regular season.
But it has become so much more!
The evening meals are a time to share stories from the days hunt, compare notes on deer movement, make strategies for the next day's hunt and just "BS" around the dinner table.(and campfire)
Last year was my first time and it was a "BLAST" !!!! Everyone was great and I made new friends. I won't be making it this year as I got a elk hunt planned for the last 2 weeks in September.. It was a fun, no pressure, laid back hunt. But I think hanging out with all you guys was the icing on the cake. Ed
Practicing hard...looking to win the "Verminator" Award.
That your 5 yard group, Bobby? :)
Ed- thanks for the kind words! Hope you can make it back at some point in the future. I will miss the "Mini-Winnie" this year! Guess I will have to suck it up and go back to the tent. ;-)
Bob- that's looking good! Just hope that was closer to 20y (than 5! ;-)
Who said he shot that group?:)
Probably learned from Roy.
LOL. I'm sorry.
I should have known better because you didn't have 18 arrows sticking in that bunch.
Counting down the days, can't wait for the 5c doe hunt, it's an all around amazing amazing and a great way to get to meet many amazing peoPle from all over. For those members of ubofpa who have never been to the doe hunt definitely need to make sure they make it, you will not be dissapointed
Awesome annual event and participation that you all have going on. I'm a non-resident and like checking in on this thread to see how its going. The more updates that you can provide when the hunt kicks off the better. Good luck to all this year!!!
Thanks for the kind words guys! It is such a blessing for all involved. Hunters, landowners, UBP, HSH and local community. Lots of good people coming together to make the event what it is today. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
tobywon- you should come out and join us this year! Would love to have you in camp and you could see firsthand what goes on. Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks for the offer Rut, would not be able to make it this year but keep us updated here.
OMG!!!! Only 69,809 5C licenses left as of 12:48 p.m.
Ok- will do Paul.
LMBO Bob! :)
It's no laughing matter Perry...as of 1:20 p.m. there are only 69,797 left.
21,776 as of 12:45pm today. They sold 1287 tags this morning.
Just got a report from Dan- he and Joe acquired a bunch of new properties for this year. All property owners reporting RECORD numbers of deer! Hope you guys are practicing and shooting well!
Get those 5C's in now. And do not use Montgomery County, Berks or Chester. Use an off brand court house that has already sold out of those units. You will thank me later, in the SRA's, those houses can not keep up.
Yes, numbers are definitely up this year, mostly due to the mild winter and low fawn mortality. Scouting has shown more does with three fawns than I can remember. Some of the farmers we have talked to have seen more crop damage than usual. This has led to acquiring more properties to hunt. We would like to take a lot of deer off these farms to show that we can be an asset in helping to manage the problem.
I'm putting in for tags, if I get them I'll be there this year.
Bill V
Oh yea, I'm new to this game. Can someone ask that Bob guy how many tags I should put in for??? :)
If bill is going I'm staying home
OK you young whipper snapper, if your not coming I'll need a few extra tag.
oink, oink
Hope you can make it bud would be nice to see you. Should be a great year
What is the bear report like for down there?
I haven't heard any reports of bears on the properties we have, but I haven't made it around to everyone yet.
Always a chance for bears to move in, especially as we get closer to the date of the hunt and the corn ripens.
However, coyotes are reported on a few of the farms, and we have been asked to whack them if we get the chance! Always willing to get an entry into the "Verminator Award"
I think it's safe to say that a bear can show up any where, any time, in any southeast special regulations area, even in Philadelphia.
Right, they can show up anywhere. But the furthest Southeast they have been seen is in Limerick that I know of. They had one running around Limerick golf course there.
Hello JR, they've been caught all the way down into Bensalem which is right on the delaware river in lower bucks county.
In the last few years Bucks county has had a bunch of bears, one in bucks county was even considering eating McArther, but thought better of it!
Bill, how you doing? Did not hear about those.. You know I am wrapped up in everything North and East of Norristown. Bucks county is pretty far down, it would be cool to get one in Chester on Montgomery on camera sometime though. You headed out to the bowhunt? There is no way I can make it, even though I got a fist full of 5C tags... Jus getting over surgery, but looking forward to the 17th opener. Good luck to all of you up there. Kill some somoothies will ya? That is what keeps those properties open for this hunt. Kill more doe, see more bucks....
Bears can't stand the smell IPA... Makes em sick..
I'd love to take out a coyote or 2
JD, you are welcome to join us for the Saturday night pig roast anyways
Well thanks... But I just got back to work and my mobility is terrible. Thanks for the offer though, I do loves me some piggy. Especially one that has been cooking all day.
Good luck guys, make us all proud and totally whack some smoothies.
I hope to make it this year, I sent for a tag
Visited a few more land owners tonight, and heard the same thing being repeated.... lots of deer this year, and a few coyotes running around.
Reports also indicate that there are some coyotes running on SGL 182 next to camp!
Thanks John!
Hope to see you this year Mike!
Hey, maybe if somebody is a good 'yote caller we could have some fun one night after dinner! ;-)
I was thinking the same thing, Perry
UPDATE: Only 14,500 tags left in 5C as of Noon today! Better put your application in TODAY if you haven't yet. They could be SOLD OUT by the weekend.
5C may be sold out tomorrow if they get McArthurs next batch of pink envelopes!!!
13,285 left now that that issued my last batch of tags haha
Almost under 11K.
My pick is by days end Monday.... supply exhausted when OTC briefly happens. They hammered 5C sales today.
9931 left at 11:53 on Thursday. We should take bets on when it will hit 0.
Just kidding.
7836 as of noon today.
I'm guessing around 2pm on Monday they will sell out. After Bob buys a couple hundred more over the counter! ;-)
5C is selling a tag every 3 seconds. If you didn't get awarded one by close of business today, you better be at the nearest county treasurer's office the momem=nt it opens on Monday, otherwise, the hogs will get even fatter.
Where the heck are all these guys hunting?
They're Pigs, Phil, Pigs.
7,268 left for 5C at close of business
70,000 tags for 5C and they will be gone Monday. Imagine that. There is a lot of doe that need killing in the SRA'S no doubt. But you guys make it sound like it is a lot. In reality it s/b unlimited. It was not that long ago that 5C tags were over 100K and sold out. Before they folded a little of 5D into it but there were over a 100K sold... Buy those tags boys, go to the UBP doe fest and whack a bunch of smoothies, some yotes and maybe a bear.
"Buy those tags boys, go to the UBP doe fest and whack a bunch of smoothies, some yotes and maybe a bear."
That's the plan, John! :)
UPDATE: as of noon today there were 2785 left. Heard one guy was in line at the courthouse this morning and there were 70 guys in front of him! I guess my prediction of a 2pm sellout is gonna be pretty close.
2:39 874 left. Geez- I was WAY off! ;-)
I didn't account for the post-lunch slowdown! :)
The treasurer's staff prolly need lunch & bathroom breaks. MontCo had the most people in line I ever saw there at 8:30 this morning.
Wow. Dropped from 615 to 495 in a matter of 5 minutes. They must have processed Bob's latest batch of pink envelopes!
If you're at the end of the line at the Treasurers offices, it sucks to be you.
Going once, going twice.........
And I thought the 5D pigs were hungry......
Next year we should have a pool to benefit the UBP on the day & time 5C sells out.
I heard there was a guy knocking people over to get to the treasurer's office before they sold out. From the description, it sure sounded like the guy on the left! ;-)
The guy in the middle didn't go until late morning.
Hey, at least he WENT this year! ;-)
Yep. At least he'll be hunting this year.
and the guy on the right prints his own!
Also, there will be a mandatory proficiency test. 3 arrows in a 9" pie plate at 20y is passing.
Wish ya luck rut butt:)
LOL! Thanks Roy- no sweat! ;-)
Did you know the test will be was in the dark? :)
No problem- I have good night vision Phil! ;-)
But did you know that we had a special plate for you Perry?
Ha! I have a proficiency test this weekend and I was shooting in the dark last night at my Block target. My wife thought I was crazy. Your eyes adjust & I don't have to worry about some silly sight-pin.
That's why they make lighted pins. ;-)
Stekewood, Bob has a laser on his bow!!!!
This morning, I added yet another farm to the list of new properties acquired for this year's 5C hunt; we've added between 500-600 acres of new farmland this year alone.
Timing couldn't have been more perfect. The farmer was just heading out to cut his alfalfa when I interrupted him. He starts to tell me that he had 40 deer in the alfalfa field, and as long as we're coming to shoot some, he'd leave 3 acres of alfalfa standing by the edge of the woods. We better shoot some deer for this farmer!
Smoke, great job. Securing permission for farms is difficult... Groovy..
dang. I should have bought more tags :))
Thanks. And I can tell you that the ONLY reason we got permission on these properties this year was because of the HSH donation.
I agree. Great job Dan.
Thanks for all the time and effort you and the others put in to make this a success.
Hey guys- if you have any empty egg cartons at home, please bring them with you. One of our new farms sells eggs and they are looking for extras. Thanks!
Nothing like spending some quality time with one of our 5C farmers as he cuts the alfalfa and shows us where to set up!!! Of course, you can only see so much from the tractor, so I got my cardio workout for the day too!
Now this is what you call crop damage folks! The entire corner of this field was wiped out! In case you were wondering, Yes, this is one of our 5C Farms!
Good job Smoke, thanks for your efforts
LOL! Nobody can say you don't go the extra mile, Dan! ;-)
Did he let you drive it???
Looks like they have been hammering that corner for some time!
Yeah, they hit it hard when it was just sprouting, so some of it never even grew (replaced now by weeds). And the stalks that did grow enough to produce ears got hit hard when it was in silk, so the ears never generated. You have to go about 30 rows in before you will actually find full ears. Major $ impact to the farmers.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Between the dry weather and deer, my New York corn was pitiful. I brush hogged the little that was left and then disc it under. I replanted witha mix of turnips, sugar beets, radishes, chicory, rape and brassica. It is up 3 to 6 inches or more. This worked last year very well too.
