It's that time of year again folks! (less than 3 months away)

This year we are proud to say we are partnering with Hunter's Sharing the Harvest to make this an official HSH event. As such, we will now be donating ALL deer to the HSH program. A lot of folks in the local communities will be benefiting from the donation of ground venison to local food banks!

Some of you may have seen the article in the Morning Call. If you didn't, click on the link.

Dates this year are Sept. 22-24 Our home base will again be the Kutztown Campground. We will have Pizza nite on Friday and Pig Roast on Sat.

Also, there will be a mandatory proficiency test. 3 arrows in a 9" pie plate at 20y is passing.

Hope to see you all there!

I should mention there is a $20 fee for registration for the hunt with part of the proceeds to go to HSH and part to the "Big Momma" awards. (3 awards for the heaviest does)

Also a modest fee for camping and for the Pizza and Pig Roast.

You will again be able to set up camp after noon on Wed. and may camp right thru to Sunday.

Flush toilets and showers are available. Tents and a limited number of trailer sites.

Coffee again will be provided in the mornings.

Hunting is on private properties that we have acquired over the years in and around the Lehigh Valley(WMU 5C)

Anyone new to the site or not familiar with the event, this is a UBP event, open to all current members of the United Bowhunters of Pa. Memberships will also be available in camp, as will UBP merchendise.

This has become a "must attend event" for many over the years, as there are few places you can enjoy camping, bowhunting and a pig roast feast, all in one weekend with some of the best people you will meet in the Pa. outdoors.

We always welcome our brothers from Western pa. who make the long trip to join us for the hunt. We welcome new friends to come out and experience this, and bring their families along, as we continue to grow the event.

Thanks for the clarification Joe.

It started as just a few of us getting together to hunt for the day in 5C and get a jump on the regular season.

But it has become so much more!

Last year was my first time and it was a "BLAST" !!!! Everyone was great and I made new friends. I won't be making it this year as I got a elk hunt planned for the last 2 weeks in September.. It was a fun, no pressure, laid back hunt. But I think hanging out with all you guys was the icing on the cake. Ed

Awesome annual event and participation that you all have going on. I'm a non-resident and like checking in on this thread to see how its going. The more updates that you can provide when the hunt kicks off the better. Good luck to all this year!!!

21,776 as of 12:45pm today. They sold 1287 tags this morning.

Just got a report from Dan- he and Joe acquired a bunch of new properties for this year. All property owners reporting RECORD numbers of deer! Hope you guys are practicing and shooting well!

11-Aug-16
Get those 5C's in now. And do not use Montgomery County, Berks or Chester. Use an off brand court house that has already sold out of those units. You will thank me later, in the SRA's, those houses can not keep up.

From: BOWJO
11-Aug-16
Yes, numbers are definitely up this year, mostly due to the mild winter and low fawn mortality. Scouting has shown more does with three fawns than I can remember. Some of the farmers we have talked to have seen more crop damage than usual. This has led to acquiring more properties to hunt. We would like to take a lot of deer off these farms to show that we can be an asset in helping to manage the problem.

What is the bear report like for down there?

From: Smoke1
13-Aug-16
I haven't heard any reports of bears on the properties we have, but I haven't made it around to everyone yet.

Always a chance for bears to move in, especially as we get closer to the date of the hunt and the corn ripens.

From: Smoke1
13-Aug-16
However, coyotes are reported on a few of the farms, and we have been asked to whack them if we get the chance! Always willing to get an entry into the "Verminator Award"

From: Bob McArthur
14-Aug-16
I think it's safe to say that a bear can show up any where, any time, in any southeast special regulations area, even in Philadelphia.

14-Aug-16
Right, they can show up anywhere. But the furthest Southeast they have been seen is in Limerick that I know of. They had one running around Limerick golf course there.

From: bill v
14-Aug-16
Hello JR, they've been caught all the way down into Bensalem which is right on the delaware river in lower bucks county.

In the last few years Bucks county has had a bunch of bears, one in bucks county was even considering eating McArther, but thought better of it!

14-Aug-16
Bill, how you doing? Did not hear about those.. You know I am wrapped up in everything North and East of Norristown. Bucks county is pretty far down, it would be cool to get one in Chester on Montgomery on camera sometime though. You headed out to the bowhunt? There is no way I can make it, even though I got a fist full of 5C tags... Jus getting over surgery, but looking forward to the 17th opener. Good luck to all of you up there. Kill some somoothies will ya? That is what keeps those properties open for this hunt. Kill more doe, see more bucks....

I'm guessing around 2pm on Monday they will sell out. After Bob buys a couple hundred more over the counter! ;-)

From: Bob McArthur
19-Aug-16
5C is selling a tag every 3 seconds. If you didn't get awarded one by close of business today, you better be at the nearest county treasurer's office the momem=nt it opens on Monday, otherwise, the hogs will get even fatter.

19-Aug-16

From: Bob McArthur
19-Aug-16

From: Bob McArthur
19-Aug-16
7,268 left for 5C at close of business

19-Aug-16
70,000 tags for 5C and they will be gone Monday. Imagine that. There is a lot of doe that need killing in the SRA'S no doubt. But you guys make it sound like it is a lot. In reality it s/b unlimited. It was not that long ago that 5C tags were over 100K and sold out. Before they folded a little of 5D into it but there were over a 100K sold... Buy those tags boys, go to the UBP doe fest and whack a bunch of smoothies, some yotes and maybe a bear.

This morning, I added yet another farm to the list of new properties acquired for this year's 5C hunt; we've added between 500-600 acres of new farmland this year alone.

Timing couldn't have been more perfect. The farmer was just heading out to cut his alfalfa when I interrupted him. He starts to tell me that he had 40 deer in the alfalfa field, and as long as we're coming to shoot some, he'd leave 3 acres of alfalfa standing by the edge of the woods. We better shoot some deer for this farmer!

27-Aug-16

From: bill v

From: Smoke
07-Sep-16
Yeah, they hit it hard when it was just sprouting, so some of it never even grew (replaced now by weeds). And the stalks that did grow enough to produce ears got hit hard when it was in silk, so the ears never generated. You have to go about 30 rows in before you will actually find full ears. Major $ impact to the farmers.

07-Sep-16
Yeah, that's what I thought.

From: Dale Miller

Between the dry weather and deer, my New York corn was pitiful. I brush hogged the little that was left and then disc it under. I replanted witha mix of turnips, sugar beets, radishes, chicory, rape and brassica. It is up 3 to 6 inches or more. This worked last year very well too.
