Hi all, new member with a few questions. My two brothers my dad and I do a family hunting trip every year and this year we decided on SW Wisconsin because my dad did not get his Iowa tag this year. We are planning on hunting mostly public but are going to knock on doors in September on our scouting trip. We have never hunted this kind of tarrain and we are wonder what to expect i.e. Deer numbers and size. I grew up in MN and our hunting was not great I live in IA now and it's a world of difference!! Any pointers or spots to check out would be appreciated! Thanks in advance and good luck this fall!

Not trying to be a downer but the public land in this area gets pounded pretty good. There are a few nice bucks running around so you do "have a chance". You might be able to get on some private but most (all) good land is probably spoken for.

Sorry I don't have any other ideas since that's the only area I have hunted. Fyi I would probably look for an area with more public land. The reason the land gets hunted so hard around there is there's not alot of it so what's there get hit pretty good. But there are deer there and during the rut anything can happen.

we bowhunted out there on public for 3 years. This was about 10 years ago. We didn't see a lot of deer but the bucks we saw all were big. It was great that way, but who knows how it has changed since then. The hunting pressure was fairly high, but we could always get "away" somewhere

First, are you bow hunting or gun hunting. Makes a huge difference on the pressure you will see.
I would study public land along the Mississippi. WI or MN side. I don't know about SW Wisconsin but I think you would do OK bow hunting pretty much anywhere as far north as Buffalo county. Some public land owned by the fish and wildlife department along the mississippi is closed to hunting so be careful about that.

Isnt there plenty of public land alomg the lower WI river?
I have a friens that lives in MKE now but is from Crawford, he seemed to look down on the idea of hunting public land. Maybe its because of all the old families in the area that have had things locked down for generations?

Yes we are bow hunting going to be around October 25th for 5 days or so.. We were looking into the Kickapoo area and along the Wisconsin river. We don't need Giants but would like to see deer and have a shot at a decent buck.

The Kickapoo are can be decent all season long. One thing to remember is that they release pheasants into the Kickapoo, so even during the week, you can expect to have hunters walking around and dogs running through. Do your home work and look for managed forest properties in the area you wish to hunt. These can be gems as many people overlook them in southern WI as they tend to be smaller parcels.
