I've never turkey hunted in my life so I don't know much about wild turkeys. While mowing grass this evening I came upon a dead hen turkey in a small creek that runs above my house. It was a fully grown hen and there was nothing obvious about the bird that explained its death. My question is this: Are there any type of viruses or diseases that could be responsible for the hen and is it safe to handle it to remove it?

There are a few diseases that can kill wild turkey. If there is no obvious sign of trauma I would suggest u contact your local DNR office so a biologist can come and get it to see if they can determine cause of death and make sure it's not a disease.

I actually did that, gobbler. I spoke to a DNR officer that told me not to worry about it. I went back out the next morning and the hen had been carried off. Thanks for the info.
