I just had the best time last night hunting one of the suburbs most ferocious animals...the squirrel.
Being a new archer I'm looking for ways to become more proficient. Then I realized there's all these tiny fury moving targets all over my yard, raiding my garden, fruit and nut trees. Sitting in the garage while watching the news and taking the occasional shot was a great time. Didn't down any but grazed on just about every shot.
Does anyone else hunt squirrels with a bow? I'm using 125gr blunts, no range finder, just trying to determine range more instinctively.
(yes it's legal in my municipality)
Be careful man . They'll pack up on ya . Get ya on ground and chew on ya like a corn cob .
It's those chipmunks that really frighten me. They're lightening fast and can run up a leg. Once I hone my skills on the beast we call squirrel I'll set my sights on the chippers.
This one put up quite a battle!
I have a friend that uses his bow to thin down his population of chipmunks. He uses a Bullhead turkey broadhead. He says that can easily slice a chipmunk in half.
I assume that it would also work on squirrels.
The one time I've ever shot at a squirrel it didn't die on impact and I impaled it to a tree. I had to ring it's neck to finish it off. I felt terrible for about a week after and still feel guilty when I think about the sound it was making.
Crusader - Using field points?
Yup, big mistake. I shot it right through the chest. The way the shot looked he should've been dead instantly but instead he flailed around on the arrow until I realized he wasn't going to die any time soon unless I helped him. Poor guy:-(
Had the same thought when I was using the field points. Guess I'll just shoot blunts at them.
Was also thinking of putting a washer behind a field point but I don't have a way to weigh the washer to keep my setup accurate.
I shoot squirrel on the bird feeders from our second floor window. Use the HTM blunts. Cannot buy them anymore. My friend invented them in the 1950s.
